$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ A new freight alliance has placed a record order for 2,500 battery-electric Class 8 trucks in the U.S., with Tesla named as the primary manufacturer and Kenworth, RIDE and Volvo listed as secondary options for carriers. The order was placed through ZET SCALE, a shipper-carrier alliance led by Catalyst Mobility and Smart Freight Centre, with founding shippers including Microsoft and PepsiCo.
The deal is structured through ZET Financial and its ZET Lease program, which will buy the trucks and lease them to carriers. Organizers say the order could nearly double the number of electric Class 8 trucks now on U.S. roads, and the first units are expected to operate across 10 freight hubs including California, Texas, Chicago, Atlanta and the New York-New Jersey area.
