The Numbers
From today, SGX board lots fall from 100 units to 10 for 11 counters, including DBS, OCBC and UOB, per SGX and Beansprout. At Friday's closes (DBS S$77.21, UOB S$43.11, OCBC S$31.66), one lot costs about S$772, S$431 and S$317, against about S$7,721, S$4,311 and S$3,166 before. SGX opens at 9am. The STI closed Friday at 5,634.82 (-0.6%) and ended September 1.4% lower, with five constituents positive for the month, per Beansprout.
On Wall Street Friday, the Dow closed at 51,176.96 (+0.49%), the S&P 500 at 7,722.72 (+0.73%) and the Nasdaq at 27,190.86 (+1.19%). AP attributes the rally to the September jobs report, with payrolls up 29,000, below expectations, and unemployment at 4.2%, which curbed expectations of Fed rate hikes and pushed Treasury yields lower. Brent was US$102.25 (-0.06%) per EnergyNow, which links the flat finish to the G7's 100 million barrel reserve release. USD/SGD is 1.2793.
BT reports CDL's Lucerne Grand sold 350 of 570 units (61%) at an average S$2,480 psf over its launch weekend.
My Personal Take
Yesterday I measured DBS, UOB and OCBC as 14%, 27% and 67% away from my 4.7% hurdle. It took me a moment to see that the lot change moves none of those numbers. It cuts the cash for one lot to a tenth, while the yield is the same payment over the same price. Saturday I said a Monday SGS print would show whether Singapore follows the US move down. I do not have one at this hour. I will watch turnover in the 11 counters over the first weeks, and one day of volume would not settle it. 🦖
