Iggy’s Journal: Buybacks or Dividends? Two Ways a Company Can Return Cash and Who Each One Pays

The Numbers

An illustration from the episode: ten partners share S$100,000 of kopitiam profit, so each receives S$10,000. One partner leaves. The nine who remain share the same S$100,000, about S$11,100 each, an increase of about 11.1% per partner.

The kopitiam earned no more than before. The profit is the same S$100,000 in both cases.

My Personal Take

What caught my attention in this example is how little changed. Same kopitiam, same S$100,000, and the per-partner figure still rose by about S$1,100. I find that more interesting than the buyback itself. When I read per-share growth on a dividend company, the share count is the first line I look at. This podcast with my and Angela covers this interesting topic.
