The Numbers
Singapore Savings Bond, November issue: 1.67% if redeemed after one year, and 2.45% a year averaged over ten years if held the full term. Applications close on 27 October.
An illustration from the episode, on S$10,000 for one year. The November Savings Bond pays S$167. A 1-year T-bill at 1.92% pays about S$192. A 12-month fixed deposit at 2.10% pays about S$210.
My Personal Take
The bond puts two rates on the same page, and they belong to two different holders. The 1.67% is 0.78 percentage points below the 2.45%, and on S$10,000 it sits S$25 behind the T-bill and S$43 behind the fixed deposit. Whether those S$25 and S$43 matter depends on a date only the holder knows. That is the part I keep coming back to.
