Recent, SAMR meetings with e-commerce platforms has two main objectives:
#1 Platform role as a quality assurance layer/filter to remove poor quality products
- this ultimately targets PDD due to the proliferations of such products.
#2 Platform role as a customer insight aggregator to support better innovation of upstream manufacturers & suppliers & differentiated products
- Its an acknowledgement to incumbent PDD being the innovator of such operating mechanism but benefits Bytedance, little redbook & Tencent the most due to the sheer amount of such insights that's inherently present on their platforms which is not actionable due to big data analytics & AI advancements.
Pure play platform players with focus on top tier 1 & 2 cities eg. Baba & JD will be highly disadvantaged due to the lack of customer data & dwindling casflow in years to come. In short, the advantage in current environment is now on social media platforms eg. Bytedance, Little Red Book & Tencent with tailwind behind PDD due to dominance in rural cities.
In theory, Tencent & Little Redbook could start an e-commerce mini app/ arm however, historically, they have been Tencent has been unsuccessful on its ecommerce mini app & Little Redbook hasn't proven capability yet. Therefore, Bytedance is the sole beneficiary to this current policy directive due to proven social media & ecommerce capability follow by PDD being the proprietor of this model & dominator of rural cities which increasingly growing in population > Tencent & Little Redbook being holders of such immense customer insights & accessibility to logistic network for hire > lastly, pure play traditional platform operators eg. JD, Baba, Meituan.
Market dynamics are ephemeral as opposed to evergreen. What's for sure is that market competition will be intensifying in a deflationary malaise economy with gov policy pressure on economic prosperity. This is a formula for disaster in traditional economics sense. I don't think its in gov's interest to see corporation collapse as proven in recent policy intervention on the platform wars that allows meituan to survive. However, their current direction however well meaning, leads to such unfortunate outcomes as historical observer would note that well-intention behind policy doesn't ensure policy outcome evidence by the countless examples of the sitcom, "unintended consequences".
