Tencent QQ Accounts Hacked for Spreading Porn Advertisements

Beijing, June 27 (TMTPOST) – Many users of QQ, an instant-messaging app of Tencent, complained on Sunday that their accounts were hacked and published several pornography pictures and links.
Some users reported that their hacked accounts have been banned by Tencent.
Affected platforms include Android, HarmonyOS and iOS. There are also cases from all provinces and regions across China. User accounts that were hacked would send pornography and casino advertisements to their contacts on QQ.
There have been cases where QQ users received pornography pictures from their friends’ accounts on Sunday or Monday. To curb the spread of pornography advertisements, some owners of group chats on QQ disabled the chat function. However, the pornography advertisements were able to spread through group chats via hacked accounts of the group owners.
QQ has responded to the news reports, saying that the situation has been taken under control. QQ said that it mobilized its cybersecurity team to fight against hacking activity and that it has gained control over the situation. According to QQ, user accounts that have been affected by the incident have resumed usable on Monday.
In the announcement, QQ also apologized to users for the inconveniences caused and said that it is working to collect evidence on the hacker team. It is said that QQ will work with the law enforcement and protect users’ rights and its platform.
There are speculations that link the hacking incident on QQ with user data leak on Xuexitong. Xuexitong has commented on the news report, saying that the company has not found any evidence that could confirm the user information leak.

QQ said that users’ accounts were hacked because users scanned QR codes provided by the hackers that allowed them to gain access to their accounts. In the announcement, QQ warned users not to scan suspicious QR codes.
