Post-War UK PMs with the Shortest Tenures

As resignations from Boris Johnson's government topped 50 on Thursday, UK media is reporting that the UK prime minister has agreed to step down later today. High-level resignations by health secretary Sajid Javid and chancellor Rishi Sunak kicked the crisis into gear Tuesday, which is now expected to end Johnson's controversy-blighted leadership of the United Kingdom and the Conservative Party.

It's not just senior figures within government saying enough is enough, either. A recent change in tone from the media outlets previously steadfastly supporting the prime minister (e.g. the Daily Mail) represented another major alarm bell. Tuesday night, even a majority of Conservative voters in a YouGov snap poll said it's time for Johnson to go.

He has vowed to "keep going" despite the "difficult circumstances", causing the press and public to invoke his nickname of "the greased piglet" once again. As this infographic shows, the impending end to his tenure today would leave him close to the top of the list of post-war prime ministers spending the shortest time in No. 10 at 1,080 days. This would place Johnson ahead of his predecessor Theresa May, the leader he helped to oust after 1,106 days in office back in 2019.
