Lack of Sleep Today

I've been writing several articles to address the human behaviour towards the volatility of the stock market. In part, it is also advice meant for me.

During these period where stocks are deep in red, I'm trying to take my advice so that I don't lose sleep. I've been trying to cover ears to the noise of recessions, rate hikes and supply chain disrupts and cover my eyes to the fluctuating and gradually declining numbers. It was difficult and last night was no acception. I checked my phone repeatedly was very tempted to purchase more stocks out of my routine. This was especially so when I saw the declining prices of$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$and $Grab Holdings(GRAB)$

But I tried remember to hold steady. I tried to look for help which came in the form of my trusty book the Intelligent Investor.

It gave me an example somewhat to the tune of:" When you buy a house, do you check the price with the real estate agent every 10 min?"

It reminded me that my stocks are a long term investment and I should not bother about minor fluctuations because it may not reflect the true value of the stock, just like a house. Its value will increase over time and that's what I should look out for. In addition, despite the temptation of the lower (and more attractive) prices, which were attractive a few days ago at a higher price, I reminded myself to stick to my routine and not spend more than what I intended.

Indeed, these few days have been an exercise in training my resolve. It has not been easy, having learnt to buy and hold, but not to be tempted to deviate from my plan. More importantly, learning to stick to the plan without too much worry. Tough.

I think fundamentally today, Tesla is different from few years ago. Their FSD technology is an industry leader. Sure there are some accidents, but remember Apple also had antennagate back in 2010.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I am sure many of us struggle for the same reasons. Setting a routine check, say once a day and not touching app otherwise works SOMETIMES for me

it is hard to make logical sense when the market is skewed by retail investors buying and selling due to emotions.

Sleep is more important than investments. Consider focusing on non-investment activities, exercise, and check if you over committed. Take care

Agree on that too. Sometimes when i wake up at 3am I will check how is the market doing, when in actual fact I know I am in this for a time period of 1 to 3 years.

Agreed & understandable of your actions (been the same too). The temptations to check, buy at low & sell at high are constantly on our heads [Miser] Sleep over it & let it grow.

30% to 45% drop are not minor fluctuations.  That's the main issue.  [Sly]
