Praise for hard work, persistence, use of good strategies, and determination, on the other hand, reinforces the idea that these are the key ingredients for success and makes the recipient more resilient in the face of difficulty.
I will readily admit that it feels a lot better to get ability praise than it does to be praised for effort.
But you have to ask yourself, what is really more important—feeling good or being well equipped to achieve your goals? If the answer is the latter, then you need to adjust your praise accordingly.
