Tesla has sold out of Model Y for the quarter, while preparing a refresh of Model 3. The configurator on Tesla’s site now reflects a delivery window of between April and June for the most popular Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive configuration, which continues to start at $54,990 today. Model Y Performance is available at a slightly-adjusted $58,990 price for delivery between March and April of this year. The new Model Y All-Wheel Drive base model can be intermittently spotted in Tesla’s existing inventory, but also appears to be currently sold-out. There is virtually no custom order availability for Model Y through the rest of the first quarter of 2023. On the other hand, Model 3 is available for delivery between February and March for all prospective builds with the exception of Model 3 Long Range All-Wheel Drive which has yet to be added back to the configurator. Tesla has halted production lines at Giga Shanghai for what’s expected to be an imminent refresh of Model 3, which should present the most significant changes to date. A refreshed Model 3 will feature aesthetic upgrades along with the larger goal of reducing production complexity and increasing affordability, a trend that will carry on throughout 2023. Real Talk There has been a newfound push for Model Y following substantial price cuts and an increased $80,000 limit for the clean vehicle tax credit, making it more surprising that it took this long to become sold-out for the quarter. Model 3 is becoming increasingly more affordable and readily-available, indicating that Tesla’s more efficient and sleek refresh will come at an opportune time. However, the refresh for Model 3 wasn’t expected until the third quarter of this year and it may take that long or longer to reach production lines at Giga Fremont for the North American market.
