In 1947, Jacobs Engineering Group was founded by Joseph J. Jacobs, as both a consulting agency and as a manufacturers' representative for makers of large-scale equipment in the processing industry.

In 1956, Jacobs Engineering landed its largest contract to date to design the alumina plant for Kaiser Aluminum.

In 1960, Jacobs Engineering won another important contract, to design and construction of a potash flotation plant for Southwest Potash.

In 1970, Jacobs Engineering went public, primarily as a way of rewarding employees with stock options.

In 1974, Merging with the Pace Companies, Jacobs Engineering recorded skyrocketing sales of $250 million.

In 1987, buyout of Robert E. McKee Corporation gave the company added strength in the construction end of Jacobs Engineering business.

In 2014, Jacobs completed a merger transaction with Sinclair Knight Merz, a 6,900-person professional services firm headquartered in Australia.

In 2016, the company moved its headquarters from Pasadena, California to Dallas, Texas.

In 2017, the Pentagon awarded a $4.6 billion Integrated Research & Development for Enterprise Solutions (IRES) follow-on contract to Jacobs Technology Inc, a unit of Jacobs Engineering Group.

In 2017, Jacobs acquired CH2M Hill – a global engineering firm in key infrastructure and government service sectors in a $3.27 billion cash-and-stock deal.

In 2018, Jacobs agreed to sell its Energy, Chemicals and Resources (ECR) segment to WorleyParsons.

In 2020, Jacobs acquired Wood Nuclear, the nuclear services arm of UK-based John Wood Group, for £250 million, adding 2000 staff and bringing Jacobs' total UK workforce to almost 11,000.

In 2020, Jacobs announced it would be investing in the UK based company PA Consulting in a deal valued at £1.825 billion.

In 2022, Jacobs announced it would enter into a joint venture with the Qatar based entity Locus Engineering Management and Services Co. W.L.L.

In 2022, Jacobs Engineering changed name to Jacobs Solutions, and traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "J".
