Major U.S. stock indexes closed with modest gains on Wednesday after a choppy trading session, with investors holding their cards close to the vest ahead of a presidential debate and an inflation report closely watched by Federal Reserve policy makers.

Rivian Automotive stock surged 23% after it was announced that Volkswagen would be investing an initial $1 billion in the electric-vehicle company, and an additional $4 billion under terms of the agreement. The two companies said they would form a joint venture “to create next-generation electrical architecture and best-in-class software technology.” Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said the partnership would help “secure our capital needs for substantial growth.”

FedEx stock gained 15.5% after the shipping and logistics company reported fiscal fourth-quarter earnings that topped analysts’ expectations, and said it anticipates revenue growth in fiscal 2025 in the low- to mid-single-digit percentage range. The company sees fiscal-year adjusted earnings per share of $20 to $22. Analysts had projected $20.92. The company also said it was reviewing the operations of its freight business. Shares of competitor United Parcel Service gained 3.2%.

Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O), opens new tab hit $2 trillion in market value for the first time on Wednesday, becoming the fifth U.S. company to surpass that level as optimism around artificial intelligence and potential interest rate cuts this year drove demand for technology-related stocks.

The stock rose 3.4% to $192.70, giving the e-commerce giant a market value of over $2 trillion and putting it in the same club as technology heavyweights Microsoft Corp, Apple Inc, Nvidia Corp and Alphabet.
