I like to buy what I spend
I like to buy shares of companies selling products favored by my loved ones, such as $LVMH-Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton(LVMHF)$ bags that my wife likes, $Roblox Corporation(RBLX)$
So far, their stock performances have been a mixed bag. LVMH and McDonald's have been flirting with their all-time-highs, while my buy-and-hold mentality has turned my handsome gain in Roblux into paper loss after the gaming platform took a dive after its share price almost doubled since I bought.
It appears that luxury items and fast foods are recession-resistant and inflation-proof, as their businesses have prevailed during the pandemic and continued to thrive when others are struggling to cope with rising costs.
Rising prices from groceries to energy have turned more consumers to head to fast-food chains for affordable meals in order to save their wallets for other daily essentials. The high-sugar, high-sodium contents of fast foods have not turned away even the wealthy who could afford much more expensive meals, as it was reported that Warren Buffett's breakfast would typically include a hamburger from McDonald's, and once when invited to a 12-course exotic lunch he instead brought a cheeseburger for himself.
At the same time, travel and holiday restrictions during the pandemic have allowed a critical mass to save up and splurge on luxury items like a long-dreamed Louis Vuitton. LVMH is almost certain to stay relevant post-pandemic, as higher prices with inflation not only have not deterred buyers who could well afford them, but in fact attracted even more who value exclusivity.
The same cannot be said of Roblux though, as it faces increasing regulatory restrictions and rising competitions in the metaverse space. Parents like me are also getting concerned with their children spending more screen time in their formative years. I still intend to keep my little stake in Roblux though, as a gift that I could pass on to my son years later as a reminder of his pre-loved :)
