Wall Street reshuffled its calls last week, with analysts changing their views across AI, energy, healthcare, consumer and utility stocks.
From $Microsoft(MSFT)$ getting a bullish AI call to $Nike(NKE)$ facing fresh turnaround concerns, here are the key institutional moves from September 21–25 — and more importantly, why analysts changed their minds.
📅 MONDAY, SEP 21 | A Mixed Start for Digital Infrastructure
🔴 $CoreWeave, Inc.(CRWV)$
Rothschild & Co Redburn: Initiated at Sell | PT: $54
Rothschild & Co Redburn started CoreWeave at Sell, taking a cautious view of the AI infrastructure name despite booming demand for computing capacity. The bearish call highlighted concerns around the risk/reward after the stock's strong run and the capital-intensive nature of AI infrastructure.
🔴 $Flutter Entertainment PLC(FLUT)$
Rothschild & Co Redburn: Buy → Neutral | PT: $169 → $119
Flutter was downgraded to Neutral alongside a substantial target cut, signaling reduced confidence in the stock's near-term upside.
🟢 $Digital Realty Trust Inc(DLR)$
Rothschild & Co Redburn: Initiated at Buy | PT: $227
Digital Realty received a much warmer reception. Its exposure to data-center demand gave analysts a more positive view of its growth opportunity.
📅 TUESDAY, SEP 22 | Wall Street Cools on Refiners ⛽
🟢 $MetLife(MET)$
Piper Sandler: Neutral → Overweight | PT: $99 → $110
Piper Sandler became more optimistic on MetLife, upgrading the insurer while raising its target. The call reflected a more favorable view of the company's earnings outlook and valuation.
🔴 $Marathon Petroleum(MPC)$
Jefferies: Buy → Hold | PT: $413
🔴 $Valero(VLO)$
Jefferies: Buy → Hold | PT: $401
Jefferies downgraded both major refiners on the same day. Rather than signaling that their businesses were suddenly deteriorating, the moves reflected a more cautious view of how much upside remained after strong refining-sector performance.
📅 WEDNESDAY, SEP 23 | Microsoft Gets the AI Vote 🤖
🟢 $Microsoft(MSFT)$
Stifel: Hold → Buy | PT: $530 → $575
Stifel upgraded Microsoft as confidence grew around the company's ability to turn its massive AI investments into sustainable growth.
With Azure, enterprise AI adoption and Microsoft's broader software ecosystem supporting the story, Stifel saw a stronger path for revenue growth and raised its target accordingly.
🔴 $PG&E Corp(PCG)$
UBS: Buy → Neutral | PT: $19 → $14
UBS went in the opposite direction on PG&E, cutting both its rating and target price. The downgrade reflected a more cautious assessment of the utility's risk/reward and reduced upside from current levels.
📅 THURSDAY, SEP 24 | CoreWeave Divides Wall Street 🔥
Thursday produced arguably the week's most interesting analyst disagreement.
🟢 $CoreWeave, Inc.(CRWV)$
JPMorgan: Neutral → Overweight | PT: $120 → $125
JPMorgan upgraded CoreWeave just three days after Rothschild & Co Redburn initiated the stock at Sell.
JPMorgan's more bullish view centered on strong AI-compute demand and improving pricing, which could support CoreWeave's revenue and margins.
That created a striking contrast:
🔴 Monday — Rothschild & Co Redburn: Sell | $54
🟢 Thursday — JPMorgan: Overweight | $125
Same company. Same week. $71 difference between the two targets.
🟢 $Paychex(PAYX)$
JPMorgan: Underweight → Neutral | PT: $105 → $115
JPMorgan became less bearish on Paychex and raised its target. But importantly, Neutral isn't necessarily a bullish call — it simply indicates the analyst no longer expects the stock to underperform.
🔴 $Dropbox Inc.(DBX)$
Citi: Neutral → Sell | PT: $33 → $29
Citi became more cautious on Dropbox, lowering both its rating and target as it saw weaker risk/reward for the stock.
📅 FRIDAY, SEP 25 | Humana Wins, Nike Gets Cut ⚡
🟢 $Humana(HUM)$
Barclays: Equal Weight → Overweight | PT: $407 → $515
Barclays delivered one of the week's biggest bullish revisions, raising Humana's target by more than $100.
The upgrade came as Barclays grew more confident around Humana's Medicare Star ratings outlook, an important factor for reimbursement and future earnings.
Investors reacted quickly, with Humana shares jumping sharply following the call.
🔴 $Nike(NKE)$
BofA: Neutral → Underperform | PT: $47 → $30
Nike received one of the week's more painful downgrades.
BofA became more cautious about the pace of Nike's turnaround, arguing that sales recovery could take longer than previously expected. The dramatic target cut — from $47 to $30 — reinforced the firm's weaker outlook.
🔴 $Comcast(CMCSA)$
KeyBanc: Sector Weight → Underweight | PT: $18
KeyBanc also turned more bearish on Comcast, citing concerns around important operating areas including broadband and theme parks.
🔍 What Did Wall Street Tell Us?
Three themes stood out last week.
🤖 AI is still powerful — but increasingly divisive.
Microsoft received a bullish upgrade, while CoreWeave attracted completely different conclusions from two institutions.
⛽ Strong performance can trigger caution.
Marathon Petroleum and Valero were downgraded even without a dramatic deterioration in their underlying businesses — showing how valuation and remaining upside matter to analyst ratings.
🔄 Turnaround stories are under scrutiny.
Nike's downgrade showed that Wall Street wants to see stronger evidence of recovery rather than simply betting that one will eventually arrive.
And that's why investors shouldn't read an upgrade as simply “good” or a downgrade as “bad.”
The more useful question is:
What changed in the analyst's expectations?

Comments
Wall Street’s biggest lesson last week wasn’t about who was bullish or bearish — it was about what investors are actually paying for in AI infrastructure.
CoreWeave is the perfect example. Rothschild Redburn focused on leverage, capital intensity and valuation, while JPMorgan argued that rising compute prices and improving margins could outweigh the debt burden.
That disagreement matters because AI infrastructure is entering a new phase: demand alone is no longer enough; pricing power, capital efficiency and cash-flow conversion will decide who captures the economics.
Microsoft’s upgrade reinforces the same idea from another angle — AI winners need to turn massive infrastructure spending into durable revenue and margins.
So I’d watch CRWV less for the $54 vs $125 debate, and more for one question: Can pricing power grow faster than its capital requirements?
That answer may matter more than any analyst target.

MSFT’s upgrade shows growing confidence in AI and Azure growth. CoreWeave is more interesting because JPMorgan and Rothschild have very different views: $125 vs $54. This shows how analysts can interpret the same company very differently.
Nike’s downgrade also reminds us that a turnaround can take longer than expected. Meanwhile, Humana’s upgrade shows how improving business expectations can quickly change sentiment.
For investors, I think the most important question is not simply “Buy or Sell?” but “Why did the analyst change the rating?”
I would also avoid making a decision based on one analyst target. It is better to look at earnings, valuation, cash flow, growth and the company's actual results.
$Microsoft(MSFT)$ is another upgrade I find interesting. Azure, enterprise AI adoption and its broader ecosystem give Microsoft multiple ways to monetize AI. Still, I would watch valuation closely because even strong companies can pull back when expectations get too high.
For my own strategy, I do not treat every upgrade as a buy signal or downgrade as a sell signal. I focus on what changed in the analyst's assumptions and whether the long-term fundamentals remain intact. Patience, discipline and gradual accumulation remain my approach.

Wall Street remains divided on CoreWeave and other AI names — upgrades and downgrades reflect very different views on AI growth and valuation.
