Wall Street is getting tougher on Big Tech's AI spending.Meta's earnings beat wasn't enough to prevent a roughly 7% sell-off, as investors questioned whether its massive AI investments would deliver meaningful returns. Now, Microsoft faces a similar test. $Meta Platforms, Inc.(META)$
$Microsoft(MSFT)$ reports fiscal Q1 2027 earnings after the bell on October 28. The company has beaten revenue and adjusted EPS estimates for eight straight quarters. But with expectations running high, another beat may not be enough to lift the stock.
What Wall Street Expects
According to Bloomberg consensus estimates, Microsoft is expected to report $90.63 billion in revenue, up 16.7% year over year, and adjusted EPS of $4.73, up 14.4%. Adjusted net income is projected at $35.18 billion.
Shares recently traded at $524.51, compared with an average analyst price target of $600.94. Options pricing implies a roughly 4.4% move following earnings, while the stock's historical average post-earnings move is about 7%.
Three Things to Watch
1. Can Azure deliver 45% growth?
Azure remains at the center of Microsoft's AI growth story.Revenue from the cloud platform grew 43% last quarter, beating expectations. Management has guided for approximately 45% growth in constant currency this quarter.
Demand appears strong. Microsoft's commercial remaining performance obligations reached $678 billion, reflecting a substantial backlog of contracted business.
But the key question is how quickly Microsoft can turn that demand into revenue. Data center capacity and access to AI computing infrastructure remain critical constraints.
2. More than $50 billion in quarterly capex. Where's the payoff?
Meta's sell-off showed that investors are no longer giving Big Tech a free pass on AI spending.Microsoft expects quarterly capital expenditures to exceed $50 billion as it expands data centers and AI infrastructure. That is a substantial investment, even for a company of Microsoft's scale.
Unlike some AI players, Microsoft has several ways to monetize that spending, from Azure cloud services to Microsoft 365 Copilot and GitHub Copilot.
Investors will be watching whether AI-driven revenue growth can keep pace with rising infrastructure costs, and what that means for margins and free cash flow.
3. Eight straight beats. Is the bar now too high?
Microsoft has beaten both revenue and adjusted EPS expectations for eight consecutive quarters.
But strong results don't always translate into higher share prices, especially when investors are already expecting another standout quarter.
This time, guidance could matter just as much as the headline numbers. Investors will be looking for signs that Azure demand remains strong, AI spending is generating returns, and profitability can hold up.

I believe $Microsoft(MSFT)$ will close Flat within plus or minus 5% range (Option C).
Nonetheless Wall Street analysts are overwhelmingly bullish with a Strong Buy rating from more than 50 analysts with Zero selling rating. The consensus target price is USD 594 to USD 610. That is an upside potential of 11% to 15%.
The bar for Microsoft is set rather high. Microsoft's Azure must prove corporate AI spending is actively converting to expanding revenue margins.
Investors want reassurance that the huge Capex is generating efficient, clear long term infrastructure returns.
Short term volatility is noise. The best opportunity is when there is a sharp drop to buy MSFT at a big discount.

Azure growth of around 45% would be encouraging, but I will also watch AI monetisation, capex, profit margins and free cash flow. Strong demand alone may not justify massive infrastructure spending if returns take too long to materialise.
If MSFT drops after earnings, I would rather wait for the market to stabilise before adding more. I prefer to DCA patiently at reasonable valuations instead of chasing a stock after an earnings beat. My focus remains on long-term fundamentals and risk management. Consistency over noise!

Microsoft will likely beat estimates again, but expectations are already very high. Investors care more about AI returns, Azure growth, and future spending than just an earnings beat.
If MSFT drops despite strong results: I'd buy the dip gradually, not all at once. Microsoft's long-term AI, cloud, and enterprise strengths remain solid.
If Azure grows 45%: Yes, that should be strong enough to support the AI rally, as it would show continued enterprise AI demand and successful AI monetization.
My move: Hold if owned, Buy on weakness, Sell only if the AI growth story materially weakens.
