UK based food delivery app Deliveroo $DELIVEROO HOLDINGS PLC(ROO.UK)$ $Deliveroo PLC(DROOF)$ says it is quitting Australia due to competition from Uber Eats$Uber(UBER)$ &Menulog.

According to the news, Deliveroo Australia’s 150 employees and 14,000 drivers have been suddenly left without work after the company announced it had entered voluntary administration and was no longer taking orders.

The London Stock Exchange-listed company$DELIVEROO HOLDINGS PLC(ROO.UK)$(dropped 7.05% on Nov 16) ,entered the Australian market in 2015, but failed to retain market share against its competitors.

The $3.1 billion company said in a media statement it had decided it would not be able to achieve the “sustainable and profitable scale in Australia without considerable financial investment”, and the returns would not outweigh the investment.

    Thanks loads @Tiger_AU for this interesting discussion topic, appreciate it loads❣️Now that the pandemic is “over”, I think food delivery stocks will suffer. People need and miss social connections and with the festive season coming, more people will choose to eat out. UBER will likely outshine DASH as a huge part of UBER’s business is ride services-one can’t drink and drive so this would be an advantage.

    Nice for Uber, shows that Uber is dominant in its core markets. Market are less tolerant for cash burning business, so if you cannot show results quickly you will lose massive capital. More consolidation to come. Well done $Uber(UBER)$

    UK’s Deliveroo exiting Australia is not good for the Australian consumers because that reduces the consumers’ choices. Deliveroo’s competitors Urber, Dash & Grab must be rejoicing now. One month’s salary compensation for the employees who suddenly lost their jobs is definitely inadequate. Hope the restaurants and the drivers get their earnings due to them fully. This is the time when the government must be fast in action to protect the people affected. Deliveroo should not just shut down and leave its mess behind.
