Seth Klarman Best Investing Qoutes

Seth KlarmanSeth Klarman is the chief executive and portfolio manager of the Baupost Group. He is a proponent of value investing, nicknamed the "Oracle of Boston" for his similar approach to Warren Buffett. Here are Klarman's quotes from the recent interview with Harvard Business School.1. "Our approach is, 'Let's look a mile wide, let's look at everything that we can possibly figure out.' Then we find something that seems like it might be a bargain, an inefficient pricing, and we go a mile deep."2. "We look between the silos. We look for cracks, we look for things leaking out, and we look for things that can't be easily siloed. There are fewer competitors in those, and if I love one thing, it's the lack of competition."3. "When you just know a certain kind of company, or you only know 20 s

Ford : More Than Just the Vehicles

Ford Motor $Ford(F)$  is selling electric delivery vans to $Deutsche Post AG(DPSTF)$  logistics company DHL. Selling vehicles is what car companies do, but this time Ford is selling more than just the vehicle. DHL announced Monday it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Ford to purchase 2,000 electric-delivery vans by the end of 2023. A couple thousand units is not all that big a deal for an auto maker that can easily deliver more than 4 million vehicles annually. But DHL also will purchase services from Ford's Pro division, including connected telematics that provide usage and maintenance details as well as EV-charging services. It's extra revenue for Ford that goes beyond vehi

Transition to Dorscon Green, Singapore Reopening Beneficiaries

Feb 13 marks the end of pandemic restrictions, a day before Budget 2023. Masks no longer mandatory, shift to Dorscon Green, and cessation of the multi-ministry task force, highlights the receding threat of COVID-19 in Singapore. While the news is unlikely a gamechanger for tourist arrivals and retail sales, it nevertheless completes Singapore's transition to normalcy. Passenger traffic at Changi Airport has recovered to 80% of pre-COVID. Further recovery should take hold with the return of Hong Kong and China tourists as they made up c.21% of visitor arrivals in 2019. They are also in net cash position, that's a big plus in this high interest rate era. Net cash is a measure of a company's liquidity - its ability to quickly meet its financial obligations. Investors can use net cash to help

Sell $Sea Ltd(SE)$ and buy $SHENG SIONG GROUP LTD(OV8.SI)$   No more free money. E-commerce players are focusing on profitability. They used to focus on growth, now they can't do that anymore. According to current research, smaller deliveries have become expensive. Merchants on third-party e-commerce platforms have increased product-pricing sharply as platforms are charging much higher take rates. Shopee's well-known market strategy to acquire market shares within a short time was offering free shipping and vouchers in the form of cash. This enabled users to offset some or all their delivery charges. However, Shopee has begun to charge higher delivery charges

Why I'm Bearish on TSLA

Three reasons why I'm bearish on $Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ . First, Elon Musk is too busy playing with Twitter and he will need to sell his TSLA shares to fund his new ambition.  Second, other that new EV companies, TSLA also facing fierce competition from big old competitors like $Ford(F)$   ,  $Volkswagen AG(VWAPY)$  , and $Bayerische Motoren Werke AG(BMWYY)$  . The big guys already jump into EV and gain more marketshare. Well established auto companies have enough capital to invest in EV. Third, TSLA valuation is super premium to

A Story Selling Gum

Joel GreenblattI find this very useful as a general approach in stock investing.Excerpt from Joel Greenblatt lectureA Story Selling GumI started in business school 25 years ago. What I know about investing other than reading financial statements, I learned on my own reading and making mistakes. Hopefully, I can give you the benefit of my experience.A number of years ago, I was trying to explain to my son what I did for a living. He is 11 years old. I spoke about selling gum.Jason, a boy in my son’s class, sold gum each day at school. He would buy a pack of gum for 25 cents and he would sell sticks of gum for 25 cents each. He sells 4 packs a day, 5 days a week, 36 weeks or about $4,000 a year. What if Jason offered to sell you half the business today? What would you pay?My son replied, "Wel

Biden Is Rethinking China Tariffs

Read the news on Barron's that Biden is rethinking China Tariffs. Is this a sign of the end of the trade war?“We did not impose any of these tariffs; they were imposed by the last administration,” President Biden said about U.S. tariffs on China.Donald Trump’s trade war with China, which peaked in 2018, is dead policy walking.Tariffs he imposed on some 8,000 Chinese imports cost U.S. customers $81 billion last year, according to the Peterson Institute for International Economics. The president showed signs of rethinking that during his just-concluded Asian tour.Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has been agitating to trim the tariff list to fight inflation. “Yellen is trying to distinguish between pillowcases and semiconductors,” says Gary Hufbauer, lead author of the Peterson Institute study.

Visa: Value Compounder, Durable Moat, High Profit Margins

Consider $Visa(V)$. Great company with ample free cash flow, no debt which is good at this high interest rate era, and still has rooms for double digits sales and earnings growth. Visa Operating Performance  Visa is a great value compounder with economies of scale, durable moat, and high profit margins. As you can see from the table above, Visa has an extraordinary operating performance. Super high ROIC and profit margins. Visa Valuation  As for the valuation, V is now trading below its 5-year average valuation. This is not a recommendation, just my opinion. Do your own research. Data source : Morningstar.com
