Trump Says Taiwan Should Pay for Defence, Sending TSMC Stock Down 3%

Reuters07-17

Taiwan should pay the United States for its defence as it does not give the country anything, U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said, sending shares of Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC down on Wednesday.

Shares in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker and a major Apple and Nvidia supplier, fell nearly 3% in overnight trading.

"I know the people very well, respect them greatly. They did take about 100% of our chip business. I think, Taiwan should pay us for defence," Trump said in interview with Bloomberg Businessweek on June 25 but published on Tuesday.

"You know, we're no different than an insurance company. Taiwan doesn't give us anything."

The U.S. is Taiwan's most important international supporter and arms supplier, but there is no formal defence agreement. The U.S. is however bound by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself.

U.S. President Joe Biden has upset the Chinese government with comments that appeared to suggest the U.S. would defend Taiwan if it were attacked, a deviation from a long-held U.S. position of "strategic ambiguity".

Washington and Taipei have had no official diplomatic or military relationship since 1979, when the U.S. switched recognition to Beijing.

There was no immediate reaction from Taiwan's government, nor TSMC which is currently in its quiet period ahead of its second quarter earnings report on Thursday.

TSMC is spending billions building new factories overseas, including $65 billion on three plants in the U.S. state of Arizona, though it says most manufacturing will remain in Taiwan.

I commented yesterday when I saw the news appear. I will try but this is going to be a rant (...sorry).  A presidential candidate, also a convicted felon, just opening his mouth and blabbering whatever comes to his mind without thinking it through is just a clear demonstration of narcissistic stupidity. Its sad that besides the two candidates there is no younger blood available? This is really the "best" available?...it does not bode well for the US.  Bullying other companies to restrict trade with china (ASML) and then Top it up with such comments. I believe china companies would be more than happy to fill up orders with TSMC and then US companies will do what? Sure they can move some to intel and taking a hit in terms of being the most advanced chips on the market until intel fi

  • this is ridiculous. First, Taiwan bought a lot of weapon from US. Second, Taiwan also following US to block latest chips export to Russia and Mainland China. taiwan is also one of the main supplier for US tech industries. Should Taiwan also charge these favor to US? 😅 really. Not make sense.

  • This is getting out of hand lol 🤣🤣🤣  What kind of world are we living in? Stock markets run not because of strong fundamentals and earnings, but because of a man being shot. 😬😬😬 Now this same man is causing waves by spewing random words that logically shouldn't matter. I don't know to laugh or cry at how insane and irrational the market has become 🤣🤣🤣🤣
