      前英超利物浦足球隊主教練拉法·貝尼特斯有句名言，在他卸任之後依然流傳甚廣：“我要一個檯燈，他們卻給我送來一張沙發”，意思是他在轉會方面缺少權力，俱樂部淨引進他所不需要、不看好的球員。在哈佛大學教授邁克爾·桑德爾（Michael J·Sandel）訪華前夕，我接到專訪委託，心裏在想：桑德爾，他究竟是檯燈還是沙發？ 這種想法其實很不正確，百年來中國學人吃的一個大虧，就是林林總總地引進西方的東西，每個人都認爲自己發現了可以一劑定讞的良藥，而事實上，遠如馬克思、列寧，近如羅爾斯、哈耶克，他們的理論都是有其適用的獨特語境的，可能在某些時候，那邊的言論觸及了這邊的敏感區，但細究起來，我們不是缺人家的土壤，就是少人家的耐心。 桑德爾在他的《公正：該如何做是好？》課程在網絡上流傳開來之前，不過就是學人小圈子裏熟悉的一個名字，一個共同體主義的倡導者，他著書立說，踩着理論的磚塊蹚水，水裏啼飢號寒的生靈都只能擡頭仰望。在採訪中，桑德爾坦言，他對社會的影響是很間接的，顯然，到他這個年紀和社會地位的學者，都能認可理查德·波斯納在《法律與文學》中的一句話：“人這種動物可以想象一個更美好的世界，但他知道，有生之年的人和努力，都收效甚微。” 桑德爾在上海的公開講座原定有兩場，盛況可期，然而到最後時刻，其中一場被臨時叫停，再次挑戰了我們的容忍下限：連他這種很重視“社會和諧”的學者都被攔在“維穩”的鐵柵欄外，我等連“收效甚微”都難以期待了。 桑德爾是看重既有秩序的，他在十五年前出版的《民主的不滿》一書中，批評美國式民主進入了一個亟須變化的險境：對於共同體價值的考量，強調集體利益之類，過去曾被視爲是保守的、扼制個人自由的，而現在，被像桑德爾、麥金泰爾等共同體主義者認爲是必須要重視的，他們的這些聲音，也在自由主義陣營裏引起了深層的“不滿”。此書的副題“美國正在尋求一種公共哲學”，也就是尋求一般所說的“公民共和主義
