periods.</li><li>Each ETF - SPY, QQQ, XLF, XLI, and XLY - had their moment of outperformance, but one or two stand out.</li></ul><p>In this article I will look at five exchange-traded funds (&#34;ETFs&#34;) to find out which one is the best to invest in once this bear market is over. The five ETFs examined in this article are: SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSEARCA:SPY), Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ), Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY), Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF), and Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI). These are often referred to as &#34;risk on&#34; assets.</p><p>I will gather data from the last five bear markets - defined as drops in the S&amp;P 500 Futures (SPX) of 20% or more. We know from history when each of the last five bear markets ended. For the purposes of this article, I will consider the bear market to be over once the market as measured by SPX has closed above its 10-month exponential moving average. In each case, this will have occurred after the exact bottom of the five bear markets. I will then look at the performance of buying each of the five ETFs at the opening price the following month and then holding those ETFs for one-, two-, and three-year periods. Let’s see what we can find out.</p><p>The first bear market will be the Dot Com Bear Market. In this event, the market lost over 50%. The S&amp;P 500 Index reclaimed its 10-month EMA in April 2003, so according to my method, I would enter a position for each of the ETFs at the open of May’s trading. Table 1 shows the results of those for the next three years.</p><p><b>Table 1 – Dot Com Bear Market</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6811d4e9082e48707e7514fe23481e33\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"288\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Author</p><p>Table 1 shows the results of SPX in the second row with the one-year, two-year, and three-year results. All other results that beat SPX are highlighted in green. Results that underperform SPX are highlighted in yellow. The bottom two rows show the median and average results for all ETFs for that period.</p><p>The results show that QQQ performed best for the first year, returning 26.70%. XLI performed best for the two-year and three-year period. XLY underperformed the market for the two and three-year periods. These results surprised me, as I thought that technology stocks would have outperformed all others for the three years because technology stocks were so beaten down during the bear market.</p><p>The second bear market examined will be the Financial Crisis Bear Market. In this event, the market as measured by the SP 500 lost over 57%. The SP 500 reclaimed its 10-month EMA in July 2009, so according to my method, I would enter a position at the open of August’s trading. Table 2 shows the results of those for the next three years.</p><p><b>Table 2 – Financial Crisis Bear Market</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/64b9e606cc2ed2413b7e715ebb7f79b1\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"282\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Author</p><p>Looking at Table 2, Industrials were the one-year winner. They more than doubled the market’s gain for the first year. XLY also more than doubled the market in the first year. Consumer Discretionary stocks outperformed all others for the two-year and three-year periods. It’s interesting to me that Financials never got on track and were clear laggards.</p><p>The third bear market examined will be the European Debt Bear Market. In this event, the market as measured by the SP 500 lost over 21%. The SP 500 reclaimed its 10-month EMA in October 2011, so according to my method, I would enter a position at the open of November’s trading. Table 3 shows the results of those for the next three years.</p><p><b>Table 3 – European Debt Crisis</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/60b78f5c93f1dc1987b7ce950f9f07b0\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"291\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Author</p><p>Table 3 shows that Financials led for the first year coming out of the bear market, more than doubling the market’s overall performance. Consumer Discretionary stocks outperformed for the first two years. Financial stocks outperformed all others over a three-year period. This table shows that all the ETFs studied outperformed the market for all three time periods.</p><p>The fourth bear market examined will be the Cryptocurrency Debt Bear Market. In case you’re wondering, I got this name fromWikipedia. In this event, the market as measured by the SP 500 lost over just over 20% barely qualifying for bear market status. The SP 500 reclaimed its 10-month EMA in January 2019, so according to my method, I would enter a position at the open of February’s trading. Table 4 shows the results of those for the next three years.</p><p><b>Table 4 – Cryptocurrency Bear Market</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d170899cac7e7fb8d0cc679e463d6c47\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"286\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Author</p><p>Coming out of this bear market is where technology stocks show up. QQQ outperforms all the other ETFs for all three time periods. It does so in a big way. It’s two-year and three-year performance is 40 percentage points higher than its closest competitor. The time frame of the table overlaps Table 5 five below and therefore shows the COVID rally where technology stocks dominated. This bear market is also one where there were several ETFs that underperformed the market over all three time periods.</p><p>The last bear market covered is the COVID Bear Market. In this event, the market as measured by the SP 500 lost over 35%. The COVID bear market was the shortest bear market in the study spanning just over a month. The SP 500 reclaimed its 10-month EMA in May 2020, so according to my method, I would enter a position at the open of June’s trading. Table 5 shows the results for two full years and to the end of October 2022 as there hasn’t been a full three years since this market reclaimed its 10-month EMA.</p><p><b>Table 5 – COVID Bear Market</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a571324503f006a6fba5cdb8000c9044\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"283\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Author</p><p>Coming out of the COVID Bear Market, Financial stocks led the way for the first year. This result surprised me. I was certain it was technology stocks that led the way. For the two-year period XLF outperformed all other ETFs while managing to lose money from the end of year one to the end of year two. The same situation happened with the return to the end of October 2022. XLF led all other ETFs for the total period, while losing money from the end of year two.</p><p>The last table will be the averages for all five ETFs compared to SPX for all five bear markets. This chart is difficult to read, and I apologize for that. When reading this chart, percentages highlighted in green are percentages that are above SPX returns for the same period of the bear market identified in the first column. Percentages highlighted in yellow are percentages that are below SPX returns for the period of the bear market identified in the first column. The cells highlighted in blue represent the best period return for that bear market.</p><p><b>Table 6 – Combined Results</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d17ce5d37e2cabb07dc35401b58ec67b\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"132\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Author</p><p>What jumps out at me from Table 6 are three things. One, SPY outperformed the broad market in each bear market recovery in each time period. So, if you want to outperform the market, buy SPY. I think Warren Buffett gives that advice. The second observation is that QQQ outperformed the broad market for the first year in every instance. It outperformed SPY for the first year in every instance except the Euro Debt Bear Market, where QQQ returned 15.96% in the first year while SPY returned 18.31% in the first year. Both beat SPX during that time frame. Three, each ETF had its moment of outperformance and underperformance.</p><p>What I’ve learned from this study is that once the current bear market is over, meaning SPX closes above its 10-month moving average, I will put some of my money in SPY. I will put money in QQQ for the first year at least. XLY, XLF, and XLI all had their opportunities to shine. The time frame of the table overlaps Table 5 five below and therefore shows the COVID rally where technology stocks dominated. This bear market is also one where there were several ETFs that underperformed the market over all three time periods.The last bear market covered is the COVID Bear Market. In this event, the market as measured by the SP 500 lost over 35%. The COVID bear market was the shortest bear market in the study spanning just over a month. The SP 500 reclaimed its 10-month EMA in May 2020, so according to my method, I would enter a position at the open of June’s trading. This result surprised me. I was certain it was technology stocks that led the way. For the two-year period XLF outperformed all other ETFs while managing to lose money from the end of year one to the end of year two. The same situation happened with the return to the end of October 2022. XLF led all other ETFs for the total period, while losing money from the end of year two.The last table will be the averages for all five ETFs compared to SPX for all five bear markets. This chart is difficult to read, and I apologize for that. When reading this chart, percentages highlighted in green are percentages that are above SPX returns for the same period of the bear market identified in the first column. Percentages highlighted in yellow are percentages that are below SPX returns for the period of the bear market identified in the first column. One, SPY outperformed the broad market in each bear market recovery in each time period. So, if you want to outperform the market, buy SPY. I think Warren Buffett gives that advice. The second observation is that QQQ outperformed the broad market for the first year in every instance. It outperformed SPY for the first year in every instance except the Euro Debt Bear Market, where QQQ returned 15.96% in the first year while SPY returned 18.31% in the first year. Both beat SPX during that time frame. Three, each ETF had its moment of outperformance and underperformance.What I’ve learned from this study is that once the current bear market is over, meaning SPX closes above its 10-month moving average, I will put some of my money in SPY. I will put money in QQQ for the first year at least. XLY, XLF, and XLI all had their opportunities to shine. Sales spiked 75% from the corresponding period of 2020, when the country’s vehicle demand was badly hit by coronavirus woes.</p><p>Digging Into Sales Numbers</p><p>For the first quarter of 2021, sales surged 76% year over year to top 6.48 million units. The massive jump was due to lower severity of COVID-19 impacts, which crimped showroom traffic in the comparable year-ago quarter.</p><p>In fact, automakers in China suffered their bleakest ever quarter in the January-March 2020 period. However, thanks to supportive government policies, gradual reopening of economic activities and pent-up vehicle demand, China is now at the forefront of global auto market recovery.</p><p>Deliveries of new light vehicles including sport utility vehicles, sedans and multi-purpose vehicles grew 77% to exceed 1.87 million units in March 2021. Deliveries of commercial vehicles including pickups and buses rose 68% year over year to 651,000 units. Electric vehicle sales jumped a whopping 240% year over year to 226,000 units.</p><p>New light vehicle deliveries in first-quarter 2021 climbed 75% from the comparable year-ago period to 5.08 million units. Sales of commercial vehicles and EVs spiked 77% and 280% to 1.41 million units and 515,000 units, respectively, on a year-over-year basis.</p><p>China EV Market on Fire, Competition Revs Up</p><p>Demand for new energy vehicles (NEVs) has been on the rise amid climate change concerns and favorable government policies. Importantly, the country projects electric vehicles (EVs) to account for 25% of new car sales by 2025.</p><p>Last April, the government of China announced plans to extend subsidies and tax breaks for NEVs such as electric or plug-in hybrid cars for another two years to spur sales. Buoyed by favorable government policies and improving consumer confidence and economy, China — world’s largest EV market — is seeing solid sales of zero-emission vehicles.</p><p>China-based EV makers including<b>BYD Co</b>,<b>NIO</b>,<b>Li Auto</b>and<b>XPeng</b>registered strong EV sales last month. Warren Buffett-backed BYD sold 24,218 EVs in March, representing a year-over-year jump of 97.6%.</p><p>NIO — which currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) — delivered 7,257 EVs last month, skyrocketing 373% year over year. General Motors is speeding up the development of advanced technologies in China to enable an all-electric future.</p><p>The company’s next-generation EVs (across all brands) in China will be powered by Ultium Drive. It should be noted that the Cadillac LYRIQ SUV would be the first Ultium-powered vehicle to be rolled out in China at Auto Shanghai 2021 later this month.</p><p>Importantly, Sales of Hong Guang mini-EV — under General Motors’ Wuling brand — exceeded 72,000 units in first-quarter 2021, retaining its position as the best-selling green vehicle in the country. Meanwhile, Ford is set to manufacture its electric Mustang Mach-E in China with its joint venture Changan Ford.</p><p>Amid soaring demand, competition is heating up in the China EV market. Even with the subsidies ending in 2022, the e-mobility battle in China is getting fiercer by the day with new upstarts, legacy automakers and tech titans foraying into the space.</p><p>A few days back, China’s leading smartphone maker Xiaomi announced that it is set to invest $10 billion in the development of EVs over the next 10 years. The agency does not expect the shortfall to ease until the fourth quarter of this year.</p><p>Although China is the largest auto market, it depends heavily on chip imports and is the largest buyer of semiconductors. Amid the chip shortfall, carmakers are scrambling to procure semiconductors, which are forcing them to undergo production cuts and idle factories. NIO shuttered operations for five days beginning Mar 29 due to microchip shortfall. Volvo Cars, owned by Geely Holdings, also halted production last month. What sets Coursera apart is its symbiotic relationship with established universities. Instead of trying to disrupt the higher education industry, Coursera is attempting to work with them to reimagine what higher education and professional courses should look like in a digital world.</p><p>That strategy seems to be working. Coursera has more than77 million students, more than most of its rivals. The company’sCoursera for Campusattracted 4,000 tertiary institutions from across the world. At the end of 2020, 130 of these institutions were premium subscribers. 2,000 businesses (including 25% of Fortune 500 companies) and 100 government agencies are alsopaying for Coursera’s enterprise offerings.</p><p>Unsurprisingly, that traction is reflected on the top line. In 2020, Coursera generated $293 million in revenue, up 59% from the previous year. Year-on-year user growth came in at 65%. However, the company extended free courses and features throughout the pandemic to gin up traffic. That led to higher costs and a loss of $66.8 million in 2020, up from $46.7 million in 2019. Free cash flow was -$26.9 million over the course of the year.</p><p>Coursera doesn’t expect to become cash flow positive or profitable anytime soon. In fact, theS-1 clearly statesthat the company “had an accumulated deficit of $343.6 million as of December 31, 2020,” and that they anticipate that the company “will continue to incur losses for the foreseeable future.”</p><p>The reopening is another risk. With students heading back to the campus this fall, it’s difficult to say if Coursera can sustain last year’s momentum and keep students and universities engaged on its platform.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2765e424ebb38bf8c4fdf74bcb5d0086\" tg-width=\"605\" tg-height=\"270\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Coursera product tiers</span></p><p>Nevertheless, the company’s partnerships with government agencies, library of content from top universities, enterprise training products and micro-certification courses could help it bolster growth over time. Online learning already was a rapidly-growing market pre-pandemic. Some estimates suggest the marketcould be worth $350 billionby 2025. Coursera was last valued at $2.5 billion.</p><p>It could be worth a lot more when the IPO is completed. One early investor is certainly expecting a windfall: SuRo Capital(NASDAQ:SSSS).</p><p><b>Operating Results</b></p><p>The company earned $293 million in revenues for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2020, up 59% from 2019. Net losses widened by about $20 million year-on-year, reaching $66.8 million in 2020. Revenues shot up as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic’s effect on traditional education. In tandem with rising demand, operating costs associated with the company’s services rose, largely driven by the freemium content and marketing expenses. Coursera added over 12,000 new degree learners across the two years ended December 31, 2020 at an average acquisition cost of just below $2,000. The number of registered users rose by 65% year-on-year in 2020. Coursera’s accumulated deficit since its founding stood at $343.6 million as of December 31, 2020. The company does not expect to turn a profit in the foreseeable future.</p><p>The company’sCoursera for Campus,launched in late 2019to enable colleges to offer its library of MOOCs to their students, has been a key driver of recent revenue growth. At the start of the pandemic, Coursera made the program free to tertiary institutions until Sept. 30, 2020. Over 4,000 tertiary institutions from across the world signed up for the program, which, according to the company’s S-1 filing, makes it, “one of our fastest growing offerings”. As of December 31, 2020, over 130 tertiary institutions were paying for it.</p><p>At this point, it is hard to predict what the end of the pandemic would have on the company’s operating results.</p><p><b>SuRo Capital - Coursera’s Proxy</b></p><p>San Francisco-based SuRo Capital is a business development company focused on tech startups and innovative private companies. SuRo’s portfolio is heavily concentrated in preferred shares of noteworthy tech startups such asCourseHero,Rent the Runway,Nextdoor,Blink HealthandForge Global.</p><p>The largest and most noteworthy position in their portfolio is a $94 million stake in Palantir Technologies(NYSE:PLTR). In fact, my first article on the company was publishedjust before Palantir’s IPO. Over the past 12 months, the stock is up 281%, which means it outperformed the most talked about tech ETF of the year - Ark Innovation ETF(NYSEARCA:ARKK).</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/803c42a2fe2b33ae60db98bb236a638e\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"852\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>Now, Palantir accounts for 31.4% of SuRo’s portfolio. Coursera is the second-largest holding. Accounting for 17.6% of the portfolio, SuRo reported the fair value of its stake at $53.2 million recently. It’s worth noting that SuRo holds this stake in preferred shares paying out 8% a year in dividends. These preferred shares should be worth a lot more when the company lists publicly. Analysts estimate Coursera could be worth as much as$5 billion, which is roughly double its valuation from 2020.</p><p>At that price, Coursera would become SuRo’s largest holding, adding roughly $50 million to the company’s book value.</p><p>Altogether,SuRo’s portfolio is worth $430 million. Meanwhile, the company’s market capitalization is $274 million. If the Coursera IPO is as successful as some of the other major tech IPOs we’ve witnessed this year, this discount to fair value could broaden further.</p><p><b>The Strategy and Market Opportunity</b></p><p>Coursera is one of the most disruptive firms in the world. It has a flywheel approach to value creation, with significant price-to-cost advantages versus its competition. The company reported that about half of its new degree students in 2020 had been previously registered with Coursera and that its average student acquisition cost was less than $2,000. Its average student acquisition cost is lower than the industry standard. The edu-tech platform is able to efficiently acquire learners at scale because of the huge number of free, high-quality courses that it offers in partnership with top educational institutions and corporations; its ability to personalize content based on its wealth of data; the strength of word-of-mouth promotion by learners; the profitability of its affiliate paid marketing channel.</p><p>The platform offers a number of education tracks, for example:</p><ul><li>Specializations: A learner can pay between $39 and $99 a month for job-specific content across over 500 categories.</li><li>MasterTrack Certificates: For a quarter to a year, a learner can earn a certificate issued by a university-issued certificate. Prices range from $2,000 to $6,000.</li><li>Bachelor’s or Master’s Degrees: Fees range from $9,000 to $45,000.</li><li>Coursera for Enterprise: Through this platform, businesses, educational institutions and governments can deploy content to their learners.</li></ul><p>In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Coursera partnered with over 330 government agencies across 30 U.S. states and cities and 70 countries as part of itsCoursera Workforce Recovery Initiative, which gave governments the chance to offer unemployed workers free access to thousands of business, data science, and technology courses from companies such as Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN)and Google(NASDAQ:GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL).</p><p>The company has 77 million registered learners, as well as over 2,000 businesses (including 25% of Fortune 500 companies) and 100 government agencies who paid for its enterprise offerings. The majority of its revenue (51%) was earned outside of the United States. Converting only a fraction of its 77 million registered users into paid users would change the economics of customer acquisition. The company’s present scale is a huge competitive advantage in the market.</p><p>A learner’s curriculum is designed to be “stackable”, which is to say that a learner can go through a domain in an incremental fashion. The company is able to leverage the huge volume of data it has accumulated from its over 220 million enrollments to personalize content. So, for example, Coursera’s Skills Graphs can suggest paths for job skills.</p><p>Coursera uses technology to drive down distribution costs, make content more affordable, extend access to less economically-endowed regions, help learners keep abreast of emerging skills, and grow its market opportunity. The Covid-19 pandemic has only accelerated secular trends towards the use of technology in education.</p><p>The size of the addressable market is massive and it’s easy to see why.An August 2020 study by the United Nationsdemonstrates the degree of disruption brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic: of the 1.6 billion students in 190 countries covered in the report, or 94% of the world’s students, were prevented from going to school because of Covid-19 pandemic related school closures.</p><p>In 2017, the World Bank indicated thatof the 200 million college students in the world, many do not have job-specific skills.</p><p>The Covid-19 pandemic and prior secular trends suggest that the future of education is in blended classrooms, job-specific education and continuous, lifelong education. Online learning platforms like Coursera will be the primary means through which educational content is delivered.</p><p>Globally, spending on higher education in 2019 was $2.2 trillion,according to HolonIQ. Spending on online degrees was $36 billion and is predicted to reach $74 billion by 2025.</p><p>With a huge, existing learner base; a strong brand; and the significant advantages detailed above, Coursera is likely to grab a significant amount of the market’s growth. Of thescenarios for the future of education, it seems that Coursera will continue to grow.</p><p>Risks</p><p>Coursera's S-1 lists several potential risks that investors should be aware of. However, I believe some are more noteworthy than others and Coursera may have missed some key risks.</p><p>Competition, for one, is something the team could have elaborated on further. Coursera is far from the only online education provider. In fact, many of its rivals including Skillshare, Gumroad, Khan Academy and Udemy have more recognizable brands.</p><p>Khan Academy is particularly noteworthy because many of the courses it offers are free. That, in my opinion, is another key risk for Coursera and perhaps the entire EdTech space. While higher education is a luxury service in North America, it's free in places like Germany. Much of the world would prefer a low-cost or free model to develop talent and plug the skills gap. College in India, for instance, costs$5,000 a year on average. Coursera isn't profitable at its current average pricing of $9,000 to $25,000 per degree course. Lower costs in the rest of the world could make profitability a bigger challenge.</p><p>Coursera could potentially overcome these challenges by recruiting lower-cost education providers in emerging markets, convincing students to pay a premium and differentiating its courses by partnering with elite universities and recruitment channels.</p><p><b>Conclusion</b></p><p>Coursera seems poised to meet the challenges of a changing education landscape. With its vast, existing user base, its flywheel model, its competitive advantages, and its existence in a huge and growing addressable market, the company is likely to do very well. The company’s value proposition is compelling. However, long run success does not equate to a good investment in the short run. An unprofitable company like Coursera is likely to be very volatile on the markets until it reaches profitability. In fact, my first article on the company was publishedjust before Palantir’s IPO. Over the past 12 months, the stock is up 281%, which means it outperformed the most talked about tech ETF of the year - Ark Innovation ETF(NYSEARCA:ARKK).Now, Palantir accounts for 31.4% of SuRo’s portfolio. Coursera is the second-largest holding. Accounting for 17.6% of the portfolio, SuRo reported the fair value of its stake at $53.2 million recently. It’s worth noting that SuRo holds this stake in preferred shares paying out 8% a year in dividends. These preferred shares should be worth a lot more when the company lists publicly. Analysts estimate Coursera could be worth as much as$5 billion, which is roughly double its valuation from 2020.At that price, Coursera would become SuRo’s largest holding, adding roughly $50 million to the company’s book value.Altogether,SuRo’s portfolio is worth $430 million. However, I believe some are more noteworthy than others and Coursera may have missed some key risks.Competition, for one, is something the team could have elaborated on further. Coursera is far from the only online education provider. In fact, many of its rivals including Skillshare, Gumroad, Khan Academy and Udemy have more recognizable brands.Khan Academy is particularly noteworthy because many of the courses it offers are free. That, in my opinion, is another key risk for Coursera and perhaps the entire EdTech space. While higher education is a luxury service in North America, it's free in places like Germany. Much of the world would prefer a low-cost or free model to develop talent and plug the skills gap. College in India, for instance, costs$5,000 a year on average. Coursera isn't profitable at its current average pricing of $9,000 to $25,000 per degree course. Lower costs in the rest of the world could make profitability a bigger challenge.Coursera could potentially overcome these challenges by recruiting lower-cost education providers in emerging markets, convincing students to pay a premium and differentiating its courses by partnering with elite universities and recruitment channels.ConclusionCoursera seems poised to meet the challenges of a changing education landscape.
