Now, the focus is turning to governments.</p>\n<p>El Salvador, which started using the U.S. dollar as its currency more than 20 years ago, last week became the first country in the world to&nbsp;pass legislation&nbsp;allowing use of Bitcoin in any transaction. President Nayib Bukele says the&nbsp;point&nbsp;is to counter the fact that relatively few citizens have bank accounts and to cut the cost of sending remittances, or money that workers ship back to their families in El Salvador from other countries.</p>\n<p>Some observers wonder whether a bigger movement is afoot: replacing a conventional currency -- the dollar, the titan of global commerce and finance -- on a national scale and then beyond.</p>\n<p>The answer, at least for Julian Sawyer, chief executive officer of Bitstamp, one of the world’s longest-running crypto exchanges, is not quite yet.</p>\n<p>“There’s been a lot of people who have sat in the crypto world who’ve said, ‘Oh, crypto is going to take over the world and traditional banks and central banks will go away,’” he said in a telephone interview from London. “That’s not going to happen.”</p>\n<p>While the technology itself may be used increasingly in the behind-the-scenes plumbing of financial services, such as money being sent across borders, Sawyer said Bitcoin is still too volatile to fully replace the dollar, though it may become part of the mix.</p>\n<p>“Will there still be the dollar? Yes,” he said. “Will there still be Visa and Mastercard? Absolutely. It will just be we’ll have alternatives for using plastic, or paper, or coins or checks.”</p>\n<p>El Salvador’s central bank president also&nbsp;said&nbsp;on state television that Bitcoin would not replace the greenback in the nation.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f716ca35f0cc6fe469229c84595316d2\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"></p>\n<p>The dollar is stable, especially when compared with Bitcoin’s explosive price moves. And whereas the dollar usually fluctuates for mundane reasons, crypto can be swayed by tweets, memes and Elon Musk -- not a great fit for a national or global currency. Bitcoin quadrupled last year, while the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index slipped 5.5% -- a fairly big number for the greenback. Since mid-April, Bitcoin has lost nearly half of its value.</p>\n<p>Bank of America Corp. research shows Bitcoin is about four times as volatile as the Brazilian real and Turkish lira -- and neither of those is anyone’s model of stability.</p>\n<p>“Bitcoin injects extra volatility,” which is counterproductive for countries looking for stability, said Marc Chandler, chief market strategist at Bannockburn Global Forex. “Why do countries peg their currency to another currency or have a currency board or have a dollarized economy? It’s because their currency has become too volatile or lost credence in the market and become out of control, very inflationary.”</p>\n<p><b>Test Case</b></p>\n<p>That doesn’t mean other countries won’t look to El Salvador as a test case for what can happen, especially those that benefit from remittance flows or have central banks already researching or piloting cryptocurrencies of their own.</p>\n<p>“Countries can’t just look away from this option now,” said Valkyrie Investments CEO&nbsp;Leah Wald, who previously worked for the World Bank. “For the longevity and health and well-being of Bitcoin, and the Bitcoin network, this is the dawn of a new day.”</p>\n<p>Nations from Haiti to Guatemala, South Sudan and Liberia could be next to adopt Bitcoin given their dependence on remittance inflows, high poverty and low financial inclusion, according to Rahul Shah, Tellimer Ltd.’s head of financials equity research.</p>\n<p>Other dollarized economies -- those, like El Salvador, that are based on the greenback -- are also candidates to officially adopt Bitcoin and become less dependent on the Federal Reserve and U.S. policies.</p>\n<p>“It potentially gives the ability to not be as beholden to the dollar over the long term, and be more independent of the existing financial system,” said Brad Bechtel, global head of currencies at Jefferies. “Once you see one country go that way, it wouldn’t surprise me to see more.”</p>\n<p>Ecuador, which has been dollarized for two decades, could also consider Bitcoin, said Emily Weis, a global macro strategist at State Street Corp. Colombia and Mexico, meanwhile, would risk disrupting their local currencies, even if they have large remittances and crypto interest among the local populations, she said.</p>\n<p>“Many EM populations already have an affinity for cryptocurrencies given capital controls, fragile local market dynamics, and volatility of local currencies,” Weis said.</p>\n<p>There’s also the related business opportunities: El Salvador’s Bukele, for example, is using the new law as a way to stoke interest in mining Bitcoin in the coastal country. While the GameStop Corp. raid developed organically around a classic value-investing thesis, subsequent runs in the shares of everything from AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. to <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WISH\">ContextLogic Inc.</a> (ticker: WISH) resemble a more coordinated campaign.</p>\n<p>Take the discussion around ContextLogic for example. According to data compiled by Quiver Quantitative, its shares were the second-most talked about Thursday on WallStreetBets and the most mentioned stock over the last week.</p>\n<p>Threads discussing the online retailer -- which like many other WallStreetBets favorites is both heavily shorted and a money-losing business -- featured comments such as “also buy the stock not just options help everyone out in making the price go up!” And “let’s make this fly!”</p>\n<p>Predictably, many of the original meme-stock diehards on WSB were quick to dismiss the attempts to meme-ify WISH.</p>\n<p>(Some of the more biting putdowns, which went beyond mere facepalm emojis, were quickly deleted by moderators.)</p>\n<p>Yet talk of inciting short squeezes has become so rampant that <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> forum member proposed banning the word “squeeze” altogether. Of course, in typical WSB fashion, that same commenter also suggested more conspiratorial motives for all the hubbub about short squeezes.</p>\n<p>“I wouldn’t be surprised if most of it came from hedge funds, trying to get people to buy in so they can drop the bag somewhere along the way,” wrote the user known as Traditional_Fee_8828.</p>\n<p>In another thread, FOMO quickly devolved into finger-pointing, recriminations and a plea to make common cause in the name of a quick buck.</p>\n<p>But not everyone loves the idea of using WSB to coordinate attacks. In recent days, multiple threads have been posted to discourage users from thinking as a collective or fighting among each other about what stocks to invest in.</p>\n<p>“We are not a group. We are not on a team. And we are not an ‘organization’ (for lack of a better term) set on destroying hedge funds,” wrote Naturallycyborg7 in a post titled “I just want to reiterate that this subreddit isn’t a collective.”</p>\n<p>Another user, aptly or ironically named TheTradingCollective depending on your perspective, tried to tamp down the infighting by urging different factions to refrain from attacking each other as they try to draw support toward their latest bet.</p>\n<p>“All day I’ve just been reading back and forth comments from $amc holders to $clov to $wkhs and all the others just bashing each other,” the poster wrote. “So we’re rooting for other individuals downfall now? While the GameStop Corp. raid developed organically around a classic value-investing thesis, subsequent runs in the shares of everything from AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. to ContextLogic Inc. (ticker: WISH) resemble a more coordinated campaign.\nTake the discussion around ContextLogic for example. According to data compiled by Quiver Quantitative, its shares were the second-most talked about Thursday on WallStreetBets and the most mentioned stock over the last week.\nThreads discussing the online retailer -- which like many other WallStreetBets favorites is both heavily shorted and a money-losing business -- featured comments such as “also buy the stock not just options help everyone out in making the price go up!” And “let’s make this fly!”\nPredictably, many of the original meme-stock diehards on WSB were quick to dismiss the attempts to meme-ify WISH.\n(Some of the more biting putdowns, which went beyond mere facepalm emojis, were quickly deleted by moderators.)\nYet talk of inciting short squeezes has become so rampant that one forum member proposed banning the word “squeeze” altogether. Thus far, the reasonably robust box office total, under restricted seating capacity and a simultaneous release on a streaming service, is good news for AMC.</p>\n<p>In contrast, <i>A Quiet Place 2</i> is opening under a 45-day exclusive theatrical window. Box office totals for the film, released on the same weekend as <i>Cruella,</i> come to $138 million worldwide.</p>\n<p>The outperformance of <i>A Quiet Place 2</i> could be due to the film's exclusive availability at theaters. However, it would be reasonable to expect some folks deciding to watch <i>Cruella</i> on Disney+. Still, getting visitors back inside movie theaters is a win for AMC.</p>\n<p>Moreover, <i>F9: The Fast Saga</i>, another part of the successful <i>Fast and Furious</i> film franchise, is set to be released in U.S. theaters on June 25. The ninth installment has already been successful elsewhere in the world, grossing over $250 million at the international box office.</p>\n<p>With a few more blockbusters coming into theaters soon, this could be a summer of recovery for AMC.</p>\n<h3>What this could mean for investors</h3>\n<p>That could be a huge gain for the company's efforts in removing cash flow problems. AMC burned through $312.9 million in cash in the most recent quarter. That's a rate of about $104 million per month. AMC has to pay rent on its movie theaters whether it has people in the seats or not. Since most of its costs are fixed, getting viewers in attendance generates positive cash flow for AMC even if it remains in negative net-income territory.</p>\n<p>On average, an AMC moviegoer spends 72% of the price of a ticket on food and beverage. Add in the fact that AMC makes more in operating profit from viewers buying food and beverage than it does from ticket sales, and AMC could be generating positive cash flow from operations by the end of the second quarter. That is, of course, if there are no further disruptions from a resurgence of coronavirus cases.</p>\n<p>The increase in cash flow, combined with the $1.246 billion in equity capital it has raised in recent months, should go a long way toward shoring up AMC's balance sheet and giving the battered movie theater chain more time to recover from the devastations of the coronavirus pandemic.
