I worked as a tour guide overseas: I had to return home after losing a million

Of course, used cars are not so easy to sell during the pandemic, and the discount is higher than usual, probably around 60-30% off. After a year like this, I still couldn't stand it. No income this year was equivalent to losing millions of RMB. In addition, after a long rest, people inevitably panicked, so in the end, I chose to return to China. The pandemic has broken out like dominoes all over the world. Even in 2021, the overseas epidemic still shows no sign of easing, which has hit the global tourism industry heavily.

According to data released by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the number of international tourists decreased by about 1.1 billion in 2020, a decrease of between 70% and 75%; International tourism revenue lost $1.1 trillion, resulting in a loss of $2 trillion to the world economy.

There are complete eggs under the overturned nest. The outbreak of the global epidemic has also made the tour guides who used to \"travel abroad\" face the most difficult year in their careers. For many overseas tour guides, this year may be \"zero tourists, zero income\" or even unemployed. So how did these overseas tour guides spend this year? What hard or interesting stories have happened to them?

After the first two issues focused on overseas house purchase and overseas intermediaries, \"Personal Experience\" turned the \"lens\" of the story to overseas tour guides. This issue focuses on four tour guides who have been engaged in overseas tours in France, Britain and Japan for a long time. During the epidemic, some of them lost millions and had to return to China, while others took advantage of this free opportunity to study short videos and maintain normal income by bringing goods and promoting them... The following are the \"epidemic stories\" of these four tour guides:

1

Lost nearly a million unemployed at home in 2020, sold half of the fleet and returned home

Dictated by: Mr. Wang

Person Profile: Worked in the tourism industry in Scotland, England, in 2005, hosting domestic tour groups

I started in the overseas travel industry in 2005, with a primary location in Scotland, UK, and have been doing it for 15 years now.

At first I started as a single tour guide. Later, when I got experience, I set up my own small company with a fleet of cars. I would hire some drivers and tour guides to receive domestic tour groups together.

Before the epidemic, I had to receive about hundreds of domestic groups a year, including some companies, schools, MBA schools, summer camps, official inspections, exhibitions and other large and small tour groups. Basically, it will be busy from April to December, and there will be a small peak at Christmas. It will be busy for about nine months, and in the off-season of the remaining months, it is the rest time of the whole family.

Before the epidemic, although our income was not particularly high, there was definitely no problem in supporting our team and family. The annual income would be about 100,000 pounds. At the same time, because of the off-season, we can give ourselves a holiday every year, rest in the UK or return to China, and our days are relatively okay.

Unexpectedly, the whole year of 2020 will be shrouded in the shadow of the epidemic. First, the epidemic broke out in Wuhan, China, and then recently, a large-scale outbreak in the UK. It is conceivable that Chinese people will definitely not take this risk to travel overseas, let alone the UK. Therefore, our tourism work is equivalent to all suspension, and a large number of tour guides and convoys engaged in domestic travel to the UK are also unemployed.

Fortunately, Britain is also giving us and the tourism industry some subsidies. This subsidy is 80% of your monthly salary in the previous tax filing month, which ensures that you will have a basic living income every month. For example, your monthly income is 5,000 pounds, and if you file taxes normally, the government subsidy for you this month will be 4,000 pounds. Of course, the magnitude of the subsidy may vary according to the situation of the company and individual.

Therefore, when the epidemic came, because I still had savings and government subsidies, my life was actually not affected. It was equivalent to taking a year off in the UK, tidying up the garden at home, playing golf, etc.

The reality is that not everyone will file their taxes normally. The proportion of British tax revenue is between 20-30%. For example, some tour guides want to keep more money in their hands before the epidemic, so they will file less taxes or not file taxes at all.

But this subsidy rule is that if you filed more taxes before, you can get more subsidies this time. If you didn't file taxes before, then you can't get subsidies, so you can only be self-reliant.

Without subsidies and savings, even if there is a risk of infection, you have to find other things to do, such as working in Chinese restaurants, take-out shops, or delivering goods, and others will do jobs such as picking up international students from the airport, returning to China, and moving.

A friend of mine is like this. He was helping foreign students move, picking them up from the airport and returning to China. Finally, in the car he took foreign students back to China, an foreign student was finally diagnosed, and he was panicked. Fortunately, he was fine in the end, but it also reflected the helplessness of his living condition.

In addition, because I have a travel agency, unlike individuals, in addition to subsidies, the government will also give me an interest-free loan according to my turnover. If I need it, I will activate this interest-free loan.

Of course, in order to reduce expenses, I am still doing some things to ensure cash flow. For example, my fleet, some of which are in not so good condition, and I will consider updating them in the future. I have sold almost all of them. At present, I have sold about half of my fleet. Of course, used cars are not so easy to sell during the epidemic, and the discount is higher than usual, about 60-30% off.

In terms of employees, because we are not in a long-term employment relationship with tour guides, most of them are settled on a daily basis, that is, you will get one day's salary for one day, and their team is not necessarily fixed, so I am okay, and I don't have to pay employees a fixed basic salary every month, so this piece relieves me.

However, after a year like this, I still couldn't stand it anymore. No income this year was equivalent to losing millions of RMB. In addition, after a long rest, people inevitably panicked, so I finally chose to return to China.

I just arrived in Beijing in mid-January 2021. First, I flew to Shanghai, where I was quarantined for 21 days. Now I am under observation according to Beijing's epidemic prevention requirements until the relevant personnel inform me that I can go out.

The big reason for returning to China is the judgment of the epidemic situation in the UK. I think it will take at least 4-5 years for the British tourism industry to recover to the pre-epidemic situation. If I rely on the British tourism industry alone, I will be unemployed in the next few years. Moreover, with the UK's Brexit, the actual impact on the local economy is relatively great, so I can't always sit and wait.

I am a native of Beijing, my house and relatives are in Beijing, so I decided to return to China and think about what I want to do in the next few years.

It's just that it will be difficult to return to China for transformation. Domestic travel agencies have actually been impacted by the epidemic. In addition, compared with domestic tour guides, I may not have more advantages. When I go to work in the company, I am in my 40s. I am not willing to give a thousand or eight thousand yuan, but I am willing to give a thousand or five thousand yuan. But why is the enterprise looking for me? He can find a young elite, so he still has to find his own suitable direction.

Now it seems more realistic at present is that I may do some golf projects with friends, have also visited many golf clubs, and have studied golf operations before. During this period, I also met many domestic golf industry insiders, so I plan to go to Shenzhen or Yunnan to do youth golf operation or training ground, but this is also a preliminary idea, and it has not yet reached the stage of action.

As for the tourism industry in the UK, if the global epidemic situation improves, I will still return to this industry. After all, I have been engaged in this industry for so many years, and I love this industry very much. In order to better attract the customers I lead, I have learned a lot of golf and wine knowledge, and I have also studied it in depth. I don't want to give up just like this. I also especially hope that the epidemic will pass and travel abroad will rebound in retaliation, but at least now, this idea is a little too optimistic.

2

Focus on short videos when you have nothing to do, and the epidemic has brought British takeaways to fire

Oral Person: British Brother Bao

Character Archives: Has settled in Britain for nearly twenty years, and mainly takes Chinese tours daily

When the epidemic first broke out in 2020, the situation in Britain, Spain and Italy was quite serious. I thought that the epidemic would affect the tourism industry in Europe, but I didn't expect it to last for so long. However, I still thought that there should be no problem in 2021, but now I feel that this year is choking enough.

After the outbreak, many Chinese tourists stopped coming. The groups I received were more high-end, private customization, and there were some large MBA study tours and business groups. In January and February 2020, there were also some family-based tours, but most people started to cancel bookings from March to May, and by the start of the UK lockdown in March, there were no more tourists.

Later, on May Day and summer, the domestic epidemic situation eased, and some people would come to consult, but they didn't form a group. All the tours plus summer camps in the summer, none came. We have many Chinese tour guides in Britain, and there are probably three to four hundred full-time guides. Basically, they change careers and return to China. Therefore, this matter has hit the tour guide groups very hard.

In addition, Britain's own domestic travel is quite depressed. The British still listen to the government. If the government says that the city is locked down and they are not allowed to walk around casually, they really stay at home and don't come out to wander. Therefore, many scenic spots in Britain are not open at all. Some big scenic spots, such as the British Museum, are booked online in advance to limit the flow of people and passengers, and some one-way routes will be made in them to ensure the safety of visitors.

I went to Scotland myself in November 2020. It was not a tourism. I went to do some errands in the past and stayed in a hotel. After staying for four days, I could feel the flute of the whole tourism industry, including the particularly luxurious hotels in the city center. It was very cheap, and I could see that the flute was really a mess.

Therefore, from the perspective of tour guides, there was basically no business in the past year, so we could only do something else. I started making short videos in 2019, with the main purpose of promoting my tourism business. Later, I did pick up some guests from the platform, and my fans reached more than 300,000.

After the outbreak of the epidemic, I began to study this thing seriously, changed the video style slightly, introduced the customs and customs of Britain, and took advantage of this opportunity to build my account, which now has more than 2 million fans. So, I am now the equivalent of being a We Media man.

My video has done some monetization, one is to bring goods, and the other is to advertise and promote. In 2020, I received some advertisements for promotion, and the income was okay, which was equal to the income of my previous tour guide.

The government will also give some subsidies. But for us, there is actually not much. The subsidies in some other industries are basically made up by 80%, such as hotels. However, for our tour guide industry, the salary is not easy to measure, because it gives money if there is a group, and it doesn't give money if there is no group. The subsidy is not so much, and you can only apply for a small fixed amount.

There are not many people around me who do purchasing agents. I have several brands or businesses here, and they have small programs. I help them promote small programs, and they can buy things on small programs. In fact, it is quite difficult to buy on behalf of us now. The epidemic situation in the UK is serious, and domestic consumers in all aspects of logistics are also very worried. Many domestic people don't want to buy things sent directly back from the UK, and are afraid of bringing the virus. Therefore, some purchasing friends I know are also complaining.

The catering industry is also less than ideal in the UK, as catering and tourism are also linked. Large luxury restaurants have been hit harder, and the government will give them certain compensation and support. Some can still survive, and some have closed down. However, take-out is quite booming. The epidemic is equivalent to changing the consumption habits of Britons and local Chinese. They are more willing to order online, and the take-out software is also hot.

3

French domestic tourism is particularly fire, with some rural homestays occupancy rate reaching 120%

Dictated by: Mr. Y.

Character Archives: Settled in France for decades, freelance work, such as contributing to domestic media, organizing business missions, etc

In the past whole year, almost a single overseas tourist on my side has not been exposed to it. There are two types of Chinese who return to France. The first is the Chinese who have lived in France for a long time. After visiting relatives or doing business in China, they return to France. The other is the overseas student. Other Chinese do not, now such an extraordinary period, how can anyone come to France to travel.

There are fewer Chinese people, but French domestic travel is very good. After the epidemic hit, international tourism basically lost about 70% and 80%, but domestic tourism only lost about 20%. Therefore, the turnover of the whole French tourism industry did not drop sharply, mainly because domestic tourism played a positive impact.

In 2020, most French people choose to spend their holidays in China. This holiday was characterized by green tourism, visiting places with few people, including many Parisians who went to their second residence in the countryside, or rented a house in the countryside, and were \"isolated\" there. This led to the development of tourism in many isolated places in France. In addition, seaside tours were popular last year, especially in summer, when tourism in the Mediterranean was hot, and the Cote d'Azur reached 70% and 80% of the usual reception.

There are also some scenic spots in big cities, such as the Louvre and Versailles, which are greatly affected. During the French ban, these attractions were closed and opened to the public only after the ban was lifted. But even if it is open, there are personnel restrictions. You have to make an appointment online to calculate how many people can enter. These places are mainly visited by international tourists, so their overall income has dropped significantly. The income of Louvre and Versailles is about more than 50%.

I saw international tourists in Paris, but they were mainly from the neighboring countries, Belgians, Dutch, British, Germans, Spaniards, and these people came to France. Because Europeans still regard pneumonia as a flu, for a while, the border was not blocked or checked at all. They drove or took a train, and I had ideas to drive to Italy to have fun. In June and July, the feeling of Europeans is that there is nothing to be afraid of, because you wear a mask and pay attention to the hotel. Everyone thinks so.

The Chinese tour guide industry in France is in decline, but there is a very important reason why everyone still thinks it can live on. France's assistance is very high.

If you work for a travel agency and are employed by a business as a tour guide, the travel agency pays you a salary. During the pandemic, you get 83% of your salary, which is regulated by the government, so you haven't been greatly affected. If you are a freelancer and do a tour guide business individually, the state will alleviate the pressure of loans for you, and in addition, it will give you a subsidy of at least 1500 euros every month.

Therefore, although the business of tour guides in 2020 is cold and their income can't be compared with before, it is still no problem to maintain a normal standard of living, and medical resources are quite developed. Whether you are sick or not, it is still quite good to have a test for free.

I heard that some tour guides started to do overseas purchasing this year, but now this situation is not something you can do if you want to. There are several important factors in overseas purchasing. First, you have to have your own customer base first. Second, the customs restrictions on purchasing are getting stricter and stricter. Third, during the grounding period, many stores are closed, and it is quite difficult for you to do purchasing.

But if you open a B&B in the countryside, it will be pretty good. One of the characteristics of France is that in rural areas, farmers have the right to rent their houses to tourists, and the government collects very low taxes to encourage rural tourism. Rural hotels have been very popular over the past year, with many popular tourist spots fully booked during the summer, reaching an occupancy rate of around 120 percent.

However, Airbnb is weak in rural areas. They are mainly in homestays in big cities, such as Paris, and few people come to travel. Therefore, this year, the tourism industry in Paris is in a state of relatively collapse, including Airbnb in big cities in France.

The restaurant industry will be hit harder because the government allows it to open for very few hours. Of course, the strength of government subsidies is also very strong. If high-end hotels don't open their doors, they can get most of the loan assistance from the state, and employees who don't go to work can get most of their wages. This is called technical unemployment wages, which are borne by the government.

In addition, the phenomenon of low-end restaurants doing take-out was indeed quite large last year. There have been many restaurants in Paris that can be ordered online. Some restaurants can't open their doors normally, so they have transformed into the business of ordering take-out online. This is indeed there.

4

We haven't worked for a year and haven't seen Chinese people grabbing masks in Japan

Dictated by: Mr. D.

Personal file: 2006 to Japan, employee of a local travel agency

When the epidemic first broke out in Japan in 2020, my colleagues and I both had the same idea, thinking that it would be nice to control it and reach the May Day Golden Week. However, on May Day, the epidemic was still spreading, so I could only look forward to November Day. As a result, November Day still couldn't work, and I could only look forward to New Year's Day. As a result, New Year's Day still couldn't work. My current inner state is looking forward to some recovery this year.

However, after the whole year of last year, everyone knows about the epidemic situation. There is no way in the short term. It will take a while for everyone to be vaccinated when the vaccine comes out. This year may not be so optimistic.

Later, Japan issued several notices prohibiting all overseas imports and forbidding all foreigners from entering Japan. However, for us, such notices are no longer feeling, because no matter how anxious we are, no one will come and there is no way to do business.

The greater impact on everyone should be in March, April and May last year. Everyone is used to it in the follow-up. Whether there is any prohibition or opening, everyone knows in their hearts that as long as the epidemic is not over, no matter how open it is, it will be short-lived. Maybe it will be opened for a week and stopped again.

Since February 2020, foreign tourists have basically gone, but Japan has a policy of allocating some budget to subsidize tourism products in order to support its own tourism industry and hotels. Since last year, it has been implemented intermittently, and as soon as the epidemic becomes serious, it will be stopped.

Domestic travel is in this state, and overseas travel is basically unexpected. Although the government has no penalties for bringing foreign groups now, travel agencies will not take the risk of doing this. The first is that no one will come, and the cost of business is not proportional to the income; Second, if someone in this group is infected, the company's future business will not be able to be done, and this negative impact will still be great.

At present, there is no pure land in Japan to provide tourists, especially Hokkaido, where the epidemic is very serious. Because at the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020, Hokkaido entered the ice and snow season, and many foreign guests passed, and then the virus was brought to Hokkaido. So when the epidemic first broke out in Japan, Hokkaido was the worst. In addition, in other big cities such as Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, there are hundreds or thousands of confirmed cases a day.

Of course, there are some places where the situation is slightly better. For example, Shanhang Prefecture and Akita Prefecture, where the economy is not very developed and the population flow is not very large, the number of infected people is relatively small, and the daily growth is in the single digits. However, these individual counties will not open international routes alone to receive guests. If they are really open, it must be a stable state in the whole country. Otherwise, they will open all routes, or they will not open them. This can only be the case.

For more than a year, we have almost no job. We are in the tourism business, and no guests come, so it is useless to help ourselves. Now we can only do some videos, or make some publicity overseas through live webcasts, so as to accumulate some popularity for the future recovery of tourism industry. Anyway, Japanese people will not be idle, and they will find something to do when they have nothing to do.

Because I work in the company, I have a salary as a guarantee, but many friends, who are in the tourism business themselves, such as chartered car drivers, will be under great pressure, and they will engage in some purchasing agents to make ends meet.

When it comes to purchasing agents, many people say that Chinese tourists bought masks in Japan in January, but I really didn't notice this. To be honest, Japanese masks are more expensive. The normal price of Japanese masks is fifty or sixty yuan a pack, which is not cheap compared with the time when domestic masks are in shortage. So there may be individuals coming to Japan to buy masks, but it is not a common phenomenon.

My income has definitely decreased. Without so much business, there will be no overtime pay and subsidies, so the overall income has decreased somewhat. Because Japan's consumption is relatively high, there are more places for families to spend on housing, so the past year has indeed been a little tight.
","source":"txcj","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
I worked as a tour guide overseas: I had to return home after losing a million
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nI worked as a tour guide overseas: I had to return home after losing a million\n
\n
\n
\n腾讯财经2021-01-23 08:53\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
My fleet, some of which are not in so good condition, has sold about half of my fleet at present.

\n
\n\n\n
source:<a 玩的。6月份、7月份的时候,欧洲人的感觉就是没有什么好怕的,因为你戴着口罩,到酒店注意一点就好了,大家都是这么认为的。\n在法国的华人导游业处于一片凋零,但是为什么大家还觉得能够过下去,有一个很重要的原因,法国的援助力度是非常高的。\n如果你是在旅行社工作,受雇于企业当导游,旅行社给你工资。疫情期间,你会得到83%的工资,这是政府规定的,所以你没受大的影响。如果你是自由职业者,个人做导游业务的,国家给你减轻贷款压力,此外每个月起码给你1500欧元的补助。\n所以,尽管2020年导游生意冷淡,收入不能跟以前比,但是维持正常的生活水准还是没问题的,医疗资源也挺发达,你是生了病还是没有生病,做检测都不要钱的,这点还是相当不错的。\n我听说有导游今年开始做海外代购,但是现在这个情况也不是你想做就能做。海外代购有几个重要因素,第一你要先有自己的客户群,第二海关对于代购的限制越来越严了,第三在禁足期间,很多商店都关门了,你要做代购也是相当困难。\n但如果你是在乡村开民宿的,就会相当不错。法国有一个特点,在乡村地区,农民有权利出租自己的房子给游客住,政府收税很低,就是为了鼓励乡村旅游的。过去一年农村酒店非常火,很多热门旅游地带在夏天期间全部订满,达到 120%左右的入住率。\n但像爱彼迎在乡村地区比较弱,他们主要是在大城市的民宿,比如巴黎,来旅游的人很少,所以今年巴黎的旅游业就处于一种比较崩溃的状态,包括爱彼迎在法国的大城市也受到了很大的打击。\n餐饮业受到的打击会比较大,因为政府允许它营业的时间很少。当然政府补助的力度也是非常大的。高档饭店不开门,就可以从国家拿大部分的贷款援助,不上班的员工也能拿到大部分工资,这个叫技术性失业工资,由政府承担。\n此外,中低档饭店做外卖的现象去年确实也挺多的,巴黎已经出现了很多可以网上订购的饭店,有些餐馆无法正常开门营业,就转型专门做网上订购外卖的业务,这个确实是有的。\n4\n我们已经一年没有活干了,没看到中国人在日本抢口罩\n口述人:D先生\n人物档案:2006年到日本,当地某旅行社员工\n2020年疫情在日本刚刚爆发的时候,我和同事的想法都一样,觉得控制一下,到了五一黄金周就好了。但是等到了五一,疫情还在蔓延,只能又盼十一,结果十一还是不行,又只能盼元旦,结果元旦还是不行,现在的内心状态就是盼着今年能恢复一些。\n但是经历了去年一整年,大家也知道疫情这个事情,短期没有办法,疫苗出来大家都接种要看一段时间,今年搞不好没那么乐观了。\n后来日本发布过几次通知,禁止一切境外输入,禁止所有外国人进入日本,但对于我们来说,这样的通知,已经没啥感觉了,因为再着急,也没人来,没办法开展业务。\n对大家比较大的影响应该是在去年三四五月份,后续大家都很习惯了,再有什么禁止也好,开放也好,大家心里都明白,只要疫情不结束,再怎么开放,也都是短暂的,说不定开放一个礼拜,又被叫停了。\n从2020年二月份至今,国外游客基本就没有了,但日本有一个政策,为了扶持本国的旅游业、酒店,拨出来一些预算给旅游产品做补贴。从去年开始断断续续的执行,只要疫情一严重,就把它停了。\n国内游都是这个状态,海外游基本没人期待,虽然现在带国外团,政府没有什么处罚措施,但是旅行社也不会去冒险做这个事情。第一是不会有人来,营业的成本和收入不成正比;第二,万一要是这个团有人感染,公司以后的业务就没有办法做了,这个负面影响还是很大的。\n目前看日本已经没有什么净土可以提供给游客了,尤其是北海道,疫情非常严重。因为2019年年底和2020年年初,北海道进入到冰雪季,很多国外客人的都过去了,然后就把病毒带到北海道。所以疫情刚在日本爆发的时候,北海道是最严重的。此外,其他像东京、大阪、名古屋这些大城市,一天的确诊病例都是成百上千人。\n当然,也有一些地方的情况稍微好一点,像山行县、秋田县这些经济不是很发达、人口流动不是很大的地方,相对来说感染人数比较少,每天的增长是个位数。但是这些个别的县也不会单独开通国际航线来接待客人,如果真是开放了,它一定是全国整体的稳定状态,要不然就全开,要不然就不开,只能是这样。\n这一年多,我们几乎没有什么工作,做旅游生意的,没有客人来,怎么自救也没用。我们现在只能做一些视频,或者通过网络直播,针对海外做一些宣传,为之后旅游业恢复,积累点人气。反正日本人不会闲着,没事就找事干。\n因为我是在公司上班,是有工资做保障的,但是很多朋友,自己在做旅游生意的,比如包车司机,他们的压力会比较大,会搞一些代购,维持生计。\n提到代购也说一点,很多人都说1月份有中国游客在日本大肆购买口罩,但这个我确实没注意到。说实话日本口罩比较贵。日本口罩正常价格是五六十块钱一包,跟国内口罩最紧缺的时候相比,卖的也都不便宜。所以可能会有个别人来日本买口罩,但不是普遍现象。\n我这边的收入肯定也是减少了,没有那么多业务了,也就没有加班费和补助费了,所以整体收入是有一些减少。因为日本的消费比较高,要供房,家庭需要开销的地方比较多,所以过去一年日子确实过得有点紧巴巴。","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1897,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"defaultTab":"following","isTTM":true}
