strong month for the U.S. labor market. Economists expect nonfarm payrolls rose by 300,000 in August, according to data from Bloomberg.</p><p>The figure is likely to serve a key role in dictating the Federal Reserve’s next rate decision at its policy-setting meeting later this month. Investors will keep a close eye on jobs data after Fed Chair Jerome Powell asserted in ahawkish speech at the Jackson Hole symposium Fridayhe is willing to accept a softening labor market in exchange for mitigating inflation.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/354281bbcc2edd592cdebfe0f8a5a9a9\" tg-width=\"705\" tg-height=\"484\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Jerome Powell, chair of the Federal Reserve walks in Teton National Park where financial leaders from around the world gathered for the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium outside Jackson, Wyoming, U.S., August 26, 2022. REUTERS/Jim Urquhart</span></p><p>“If there is a conflict in the Fed’s two mandates as they work to slow inflation, Chair Powell ranks price stability head and shoulders above maximum employment,” Jeff Klingelhofer, co-head of investments at Thornburg Investment Management said in a note on Friday.</p><p>Powell’sremarks sent markets tumbling, with all three major averages settling at four-week lows on Friday.</p><p>The Nasdaq plunged 3.9%, and the S&amp;P 500 shed 3.3%, with both indexes logging their biggest one-day drops since June 13. The Dow Jones Industrial Average erased 1,000 points, or roughly 3% on Friday.</p><p>“There will very likely be some softening of labor market conditions,” Powell said in his speech.</p><p>“While higher interest rates, slower growth and softer labor market conditions will bring down inflation, they will also bring some pain to households and businesses,” Powell added. “These are the unfortunate costs of reducing inflation. But a failure to restore price stability would mean far greater pain.”</p><p>Up until Friday, some market participants had expected the U.S. central bank may pivot in its monetary tightening plans, but Powell and other officials have pushed back on the possibility of notching down rate hikes this year.</p><p>Inflation has shown signs of moderating, but continues to run sharply higher than the Federal Reserve’s target of 2%. Data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis on Friday showed consumer prices fell slightly last month, with headline PCE falling 0.1% between June and July, driven primarily by a 4.8% decline in energy prices. REUTERS/Jim Urquhart</span></p><p>And core PCE, the Fed&#39;s preferred measure of inflation, rose 0.1% month-on-month in July and 4.6% from the prior year, marking the lowest annual increase since October 2021.</p><p>Still, Powell indicated another “unusually large” rate hike was possible in September after the central bank raised rates by 75 basis points inJuneandJuly.</p><p>&#34;Restoring price stability will likely require maintaining a restrictive policy stance for some time,&#34; Powell said. &#34;The historical record cautions strongly against prematurely loosening policy.”</p><p>Elsewhere in labor market data,ADP will resume its private payrolls reportwith new a methodology on Wednesday after a temporary pause in June and July. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg expect the release to show 300,000 private payrolls were added in August.</p><p>ADP&#39;s monthly private jobs report comes two days before the Labor Department releases its official jobs report. While the company’s print is an imperfect precursor to the government’s release, it offers a snapshot of job growth during the period.</p><p>The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), Challenger Job Cuts, and initial weekly jobless claims are also on the docket of employment data set for release this week.</p><p>On the earnings front, the reporting season has largely wound down, but a few potentially market-moving results are still on tap. The next step is to find three good stocks and then calculate how many shares to buy to generate that income. Theoretically it would take a smaller investment if we used a dividend reinvestment plan, but that complicates the math.</p><p>The three stocks are <b>Realty Income</b>, <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/STOR\">STORE Capital</a></b> and <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DEX.AU\">Duke</a> Energy</b>. I&#39;ll work through the math when discussing each one. Note that I am also choosing conservative names, which would be appropriate for an income investor.</p><h2>Triple-net lease REITs are highly stable income-generating businesses</h2><p>Realty Income is a real estate investment trust (REIT) that focuses on single-tenant real estate properties. It is a Dividend Aristocrat, and has been a stalwart performer through thick and thin. It leases properties to tenants under long-term triple-net lease contracts. These contracts generally last a long time and push most of the operational costs on to the tenant. The stock is currently trading at about $70.60 and pays an annual dividend of $2.97. Over five years, the stock should pay a total of $14.85 in dividends, assuming no cuts or increases. To generate $333 in income you would need 22.5 shares, which would cost $1,589.</p><p>As a Dividend Aristocrat, the company has a long history of dividend increases, so chances are that the stock will generate more than $14.85 in dividends over the next five years.   During the COVID-19 pandemic, most REITs cut their dividends. Realty Income hiked its dividend three times in 2020. It should be a core holding in an income investor&#39;s portfolio.</p><p>STORE Capital has a similar business model to Realty Income. It is a major holding of Warren Buffett&#39;s <b>Berkshire Hathaway</b>. Like Realty Income, it largely focuses on tenants that are somewhat more insulated from the business cycle than most. STORE&#39;s typical tenants include fast-food and casual dining restaurants, child education centers, supermarkets, retail, and some manufacturing. Like Realty Income, the company was able to raise its dividend during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its business model is highly conservative, and it does a deep dive into the financials of its tenants. The stock is trading at about $27.50 and pays $1.54 in annual dividends. Assuming no cuts or increases, that should build to $7.70 in dividends over the next five years. To get $333 in income you would need 43.3 shares at a cost of $1,195.</p><h2>Regulated utilities are protected by the government</h2><p>Duke Energy is a regulated utility, which is another favorite for income investors. Duke provides electricity and natural gas service to the Southeast and parts of the <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MDWT\">Midwest</a>. Regulated utilities are often granted monopoly rights for a territory in exchange for letting the regulators determine what they are permitted to charge. This prevents the utility from price gouging, and it also ensures that it can earn a return without getting into financial distress. Utilities have historically been considered some of the safest stocks given that demand is pretty constant and they face little competition. Duke is currently trading at about $110.50 per share. Duke pays an annual dividend of $4.02, which would amount to $20.10 over five years. To generate $333 in income you would need 16.6 shares which would cost about $1,843</p><p>So, overall if you bought these three stocks, it would cost $4,626 to buy enough shares to generate $1,000 in income over the next five years. The next step is to find three good stocks and then calculate how many shares to buy to generate that income. Theoretically it would take a smaller investment if we used a dividend reinvestment plan, but that complicates the math.The three stocks are Realty Income, STORE Capital and Duke Energy. I'll work through the math when discussing each one. Note that I am also choosing conservative names, which would be appropriate for an income investor.Triple-net lease REITs are highly stable income-generating businessesRealty Income is a real estate investment trust (REIT) that focuses on single-tenant real estate properties. It is a Dividend Aristocrat, and has been a stalwart performer through thick and thin. It leases properties to tenants under long-term triple-net lease contracts. These contracts generally last a long time and push most of the operational costs on to the tenant. The stock is currently trading at about $70.60 and pays an annual dividend of $2.97. Over five years, the stock should pay a total of $14.85 in dividends, assuming no cuts or increases. To generate $333 in income you would need 22.5 shares, which would cost $1,589.As a Dividend Aristocrat, the company has a long history of dividend increases, so chances are that the stock will generate more than $14.85 in dividends over the next five years.   During the COVID-19 pandemic, most REITs cut their dividends. Realty Income hiked its dividend three times in 2020. It should be a core holding in an income investor's portfolio.STORE Capital has a similar business model to Realty Income. It is a major holding of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway. Like Realty Income, it largely focuses on tenants that are somewhat more insulated from the business cycle than most. STORE's typical tenants include fast-food and casual dining restaurants, child education centers, supermarkets, retail, and some manufacturing. Like Realty Income, the company was able to raise its dividend during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its business model is highly conservative, and it does a deep dive into the financials of its tenants. The stock is trading at about $27.50 and pays $1.54 in annual dividends. Assuming no cuts or increases, that should build to $7.70 in dividends over the next five years. To get $333 in income you would need 43.3 shares at a cost of $1,195.Regulated utilities are protected by the governmentDuke Energy is a regulated utility, which is another favorite for income investors. Duke provides electricity and natural gas service to the Southeast and parts of the Midwest. Regulated utilities are often granted monopoly rights for a territory in exchange for letting the regulators determine what they are permitted to charge. This prevents the utility from price gouging, and it also ensures that it can earn a return without getting into financial distress. Utilities have historically been considered some of the safest stocks given that demand is pretty constant and they face little competition. Duke is currently trading at about $110.50 per share. Duke pays an annual dividend of $4.02, which would amount to $20.10 over five years. To generate $333 in income you would need 16.6 shares which would cost about $1,843So, overall if you bought these three stocks, it would cost $4,626 to buy enough shares to generate $1,000 in income over the next five years.
