(NYSE:NIO) previewed its Q1 results ten days ago, and despite what some have qualified as disappointing results and guidance, the stock is up nearly 30% in the last month.</p><p>Results, while not great, have been good in a challenging macroeconomic context. But most important are the numerous growth catalysts that NIO has announced in the last few months.</p><p>On top of that, with the recent rally, NIO shares have shown clear evidence of a sentiment shift and early signs that a bottom could be in.</p><p>With that said, I am changing my rating back to a strong buy, as I see this as an opportunity to both buy NIO near the low while also buying shares into strength.</p><p><b>Recent Results</b></p><p>In my last article on NIO, I talked about the challenges posed by the CCP and delisting fears. I gave NIO a buy rating back then since I was fundamentally bullish, but the environment and share price were not. Now, with the latest results in place, numerous catalysts and a strong trend reversal, I am shifting my view back to a strong buy.</p><p>Let’s begin by looking at deliveries for the latest quarter.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a0bdf6679d390abdee3945b62903d029\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"188\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>NIO Q1 Deliveries(IR NIO)</p><p>NIO delivered 25,768 vehicles in Q1, which was only a 0.3% increase versus the latest quarter but a 25% increase YoY.</p><p>While deliveries have certainly been underwhelming, it is perhaps the shrinking margins which investors have been most concerned about:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fab46e448af8f6c75ae7f2b5c8095456\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"274\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>NIO Financial Results(NIO IR)</p><p>Although NIO provided a technical beat on EPS, vehicle margin has contracted by 310bp YoY and 280bp QoQ. The gross margin now sits at 14.8%, while it was 19.5% this time last year.</p><p>Investors are rightly asking themselves how a company like NIO will return value to them in the future. NIO is in a very competitive market and is also fighting supply disruptions, along with higher input costs brought about by inflation.</p><p>However, if we focus on what NIO can control, we see strong initiatives coming from the company to improve profitability, improve their product offerings, and keep growing at a fast rate.</p><p><b>Numerous Catalysts</b></p><p>NIO is doing everything it can to solve the problems it faces today. But complex problems require complex solutions, and it will take time for NIO to turn things around.</p><p>One such initiative is NIO announcing plans to develop its own battery pack in 2024. The company will produce an 800-volt pack and use a combination of in-home and outsourced batteries for its production needs.</p><p>This follows a prior announcement that NIO was investing $32.8 million to develop a lithium-ion battery lab in Shanghai. This is a great move on NIO&#39;s part, as lithium lies at the heart of battery technology and is becoming an expensive and scarce resource. EV makers that can find a way to optimize the use of lithium will have a great advantage over competitors moving forward.</p><p>Also, NIO’s founder William Li announced recently that the company would be launching a development (R&amp;D) center for autonomous driving and artificial intelligence in Singapore, where NIO shares were recently listed.</p><p>On top of that, it’s worth mentioning that NIO is building another factory in Lu&#39;an city, which will be completed in the first half of 2023. This park will make aluminum die-casting products, which will not only improve NIO’s margins but also help reduce emissions by 50%.</p><p>On the profitability front, NIO is doing its best to keep costs down by investing in better technology and increasing its production capacity, which will provide them with economies of scale.</p><p>On the more imminent growth part of the equation, we also have two recent catalysts that will help NIO maintain high levels of growth.</p><p>Firstly, the company has announced the launch of the ES7, a mid-large-sized SUV. What’s most notable about this launch is that it will be the first NIO vehicle to operate on the new NT 2.0 technology platform, which features level 4 autonomous driving. The ES7 could be a game-changer for NIO, and it should help boost sales starting in September.</p><p>Furthermore, NIO will also be getting help from the Chinese government. As one of the many measures introduced by the CCP to promote consumption after the pandemic, China will be increasing the quota for passenger cars. In China, the ownership of cars is limited, but this limit will be increased this year, which will be a catalyst for car manufacturers as a whole.</p><p>To this, we can add the fact that China will probably be expanding EV subsidies until next year.</p><p>In conclusion, we have numerous catalysts in play now that were not present a month ago, which is changing investor sentiment.</p><p><b>Early Signs of A Bottom</b></p><p>The events of the last month have propelled NIO shares higher since we reached a bottom at around $14. Investor sentiment looks to have shifted, COVID lockdowns in China are ending, the government is moving to increase consumption, and both NIO and the market as a whole have come down to much more attractive valuations.</p><p>We are beginning to see signs of a bottom, and this is also evident if we look at NIO’s price chart:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9e8016b3ec78347b3f5c43727e90b0c7\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"653\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>NIO Technical Analysis(Author&#39;s work)</p><p>As we can see from the chart above, NIO has now escaped the downtrend channel it has been in since November of last year. On top of that, we have seen very impulsive moves, with NIO rallying over 10% on numerous days. From an Elliott Wave perspective, we could point out 5 waves up, forming a diagonal.</p><p>Lastly, the RSI and MACD are also giving us bullish indications. On the 1D chart, the RSI has established a clear uptrend, but it is still far from overbought. The MACD has avoided a bullish crossover and gained momentum, which is also encouraging.</p><p>All in all, we are seeing early signs of a bottom. The sentiment is changing, which is backed up by the technical picture.</p><p><b>Valuation</b></p><p>EVs are essentially computers on wheels. That’s why comparisons and valuations with “traditional” auto manufacturers are inappropriate. EV makers are like tech companies, collecting data with every ride, and the value of this data is hard to calculate (though we know it is significant).</p><p>With that said, NIO currently trades at a P/S of 4, and this seems pretty low considering future growth prospects:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b56774ecb609017deaffbfadf74ebf48\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"174\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>NIO Revenue Forecasts(Seeking Alpha)</p><p>By 2025 NIO could achieve between $23-$35 billion in revenue, implying a fwd P/S of 0.89. NIO’s average P/S since its inception has been close to 11, and Tesla currently trades at a P/S close to 8. NIO’s P/S should be closer to this in the long run, and even using a conservative figure of 6, NIO shares could easily double from here.</p><p>On top of that, investing in NIO at these prices comes with a considerable safety net. NIO has about 5$/share and is trading at only four times that. This is a company that is growing fast and is nowhere near bankruptcy. Realistically, the shares can’t go down much below recent lows.</p><p><b>Risks</b></p><p>Investing in NIO doesn’t come without risks. Chinese stocks are in a delicate situation right now, given geopolitical tensions and delisting fears, which I addressed in my last article.</p><p>As mentioned above, NIO favors a challenging macro environment and a competitive landscape, but I see evidence that the company can turn this around.</p><p><b>Final Thoughts</b></p><p>NIO Inc is one of the leading EV manufacturers in China, quickly becoming a global company. While recent results could be interpreted as weak, the company is making the right moves to improve profitability and keep growing. Investor sentiment looks to have shifted, COVID lockdowns in China are ending, the government is moving to increase consumption, and both NIO and the market as a whole have come down to much more attractive valuations.We are beginning to see signs of a bottom, and this is also evident if we look at NIO’s price chart:NIO Technical Analysis(Author's work)As we can see from the chart above, NIO has now escaped the downtrend channel it has been in since November of last year. On top of that, we have seen very impulsive moves, with NIO rallying over 10% on numerous days. From an Elliott Wave perspective, we could point out 5 waves up, forming a diagonal.Lastly, the RSI and MACD are also giving us bullish indications. On the 1D chart, the RSI has established a clear uptrend, but it is still far from overbought. The MACD has avoided a bullish crossover and gained momentum, which is also encouraging.All in all, we are seeing early signs of a bottom. The sentiment is changing, which is backed up by the technical picture.ValuationEVs are essentially computers on wheels. That’s why comparisons and valuations with “traditional” auto manufacturers are inappropriate. EV makers are like tech companies, collecting data with every ride, and the value of this data is hard to calculate (though we know it is significant).With that said, NIO currently trades at a P/S of 4, and this seems pretty low considering future growth prospects:NIO Revenue Forecasts(Seeking Alpha)By 2025 NIO could achieve between $23-$35 billion in revenue, implying a fwd P/S of 0.89. NIO’s average P/S since its inception has been close to 11, and Tesla currently trades at a P/S close to 8. NIO’s P/S should be closer to this in the long run, and even using a conservative figure of 6, NIO shares could easily double from here.On top of that, investing in NIO at these prices comes with a considerable safety net. NIO has about 5$/share and is trading at only four times that. This is a company that is growing fast and is nowhere near bankruptcy. Realistically, the shares can’t go down much below recent lows.RisksInvesting in NIO doesn’t come without risks. Chinese stocks are in a delicate situation right now, given geopolitical tensions and delisting fears, which I addressed in my last article.As mentioned above, NIO favors a challenging macro environment and a competitive landscape, but I see evidence that the company can turn this around.Final ThoughtsNIO Inc is one of the leading EV manufacturers in China, quickly becoming a global company. While recent results could be interpreted as weak, the company is making the right moves to improve profitability and keep growing. Typically, 66% beat estimates.</p><p>&#34;It certainly feels like every earnings season, especially since March 2020, is more important than the next, but particularly given where we sit in the economic cycle, the Fed&#39;s rate hike cycle, and the elevated inflation backdrop,&#34; said Max Grinacoff, equity derivatives strategist at <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BNPQF\">BNP Paribas</a>.</p><p>&#34;So it all comes down to whether corporate earnings will remain resilient, in the face of what we have seen year-to-date geopolitically and with the U.S. economic picture. It will be a true test.&#34;</p><p>St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank President James Bullard on Monday repeated his case for increasing the rates to 3.5% by the end of the year to slow a 40-year-high inflation. While market internals have not exactly been rousing as this rally continues, they have not been negative, either.</p><p>The 4600 level was a double resistance area from February (see horizontal line on the accompanying chart). On March 29, the S&amp;P 500 gapped up over that level in a show of strength, but it was not able to continue that the next day.</p><p>Even so, the moving averages and the “modified Bollinger Bands” (mBB) are now trending higher, and that is a sign that the SPX chart has turned bullish, at least for now. The next resistance level is 4700, and then at the all-time highs at 4800.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/1894fc906c1cfdfa5da5f3939ba8b48e\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"527\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Lawrence McMillan</span></p><p>SPX also touched the +4σ mBB, and that completes the McMillan Volatility Band (MVB) buy that was issued in late January. If SPX pushes higher, it might set up a new sell signal, but for now there is not an MVB signal in play.</p><p>Equity-only put-call ratios are one of our most bullish indicators at this time, as these ratios continue to fall sharply. They have fallen below their February lows, which is bullish confirmation.</p><p>There is a lot of room between their current position on their charts and the chart lows, which is where sell signals would normally take place. That is, the bulls have a lot of room to roam with this buy signal.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b7bf8dbc8e87a30b974d771776a21949\" tg-width=\"699\" tg-height=\"526\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Lawrence McMillan</span></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3a3bdcffa6ab029ae7638878ecc312af\" tg-width=\"699\" tg-height=\"526\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Lawrence McMillan</span></p><p>Market breadth has been a laggard, though. That is not going to come as a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention to market internals over the last year or so. Breadth has struggled to keep pace for a long time.</p><p>This past week, the only strong breadth day was March 29, when SPX gapped up over 4600. Still, the breadth oscillators remain on buy signals at this time. If SPX does move higher from here, we need to see breadth expand, lest we end up with a negative divergence such as we had for the last six months of 2021, which led to the correction that ensued at the beginning of 2022.</p><p>New 52-week highs have finally eked out a gain over new 52-week lows. This has resulted in a buy signal from the NYSE data for this indicator. “Stocks only” and NASDAQ data have improved, too. At this point, the buy signal is tenuous, but it’s the first one this year for new highs vs. new lows.</p><p>VIX indicators have turned more positive as well. Technically, the VIX “spike peak” buy signal of late February has “expired” (the trading system we built around peaks on the VIX chart calls for holding the position for 22 trading days, and that time has elapsed). But it was a successful signal, and one can still retain positions based on it, as long as stops are tightened and long call strikes are rolled higher.</p><p>The trend of VIX is no longer bearish (that is, VIX is no longer in an uptrend), since VIX has closed below its 200-day moving average. However, that only removes the intermediate-term sell signal; it is not a buy signal. The VIX 20-day MA would have to cross below the 200-day MA in order for an intermediate-term buy signal to be generated.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/84d0934095fe234a770bebe2dba58a51\" tg-width=\"699\" tg-height=\"526\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Lawrence McMillan</span></p><p>The last time that both VIX and its 20-day MA were below the 200-day MA was late last November (note the circle on the accompanying VIX chart). In early January, VIX crossed below the 200-day MA (similar to what has just happened now), but the 20-day did not, and eventually that led to trouble for the markets a couple of weeks later when VIX began to rise again. So stay alert.</p><p>The construct of volatility derivatives remains in a modestly bullish state for stocks. The term structure of the VIX futures slopes upward in the front end, and the VIX futures are trading at healthy premiums to VIX. Also, the Cboe Volatility Index term structure slopes upward.</p><p>In summary, there are no sell signals among our indicators at this time, and there are quite a few buy signals, the strongest being the equity-only put-call ratio. We are waiting for some of the “neutral” indicators to generate signals, but that could take some time to develop.</p><p>So we are no longer carrying a “core” bearish position, and we are trading our shorter-term signals from the other indicators accordingly. Continue to tighten stops and roll call strikes higher as this rally proceeds.</p><p><b>New recommendation: Russell 2000 ETF</b></p><p>The Russell 2000 was under extreme pressure for most of the first three months of this year. But now it appears to be recovering. There was a long support line at 209 last year, and then when that was broken on the downside this year, it became resistance. The Russell 2000 ETF is challenging that resistance now, and there are put-call ratio buy signals on the Index as well. On March 29, the S&P 500 gapped up over that level in a show of strength, but it was not able to continue that the next day.Even so, the moving averages and the “modified Bollinger Bands” (mBB) are now trending higher, and that is a sign that the SPX chart has turned bullish, at least for now. The next resistance level is 4700, and then at the all-time highs at 4800.Lawrence McMillanSPX also touched the +4σ mBB, and that completes the McMillan Volatility Band (MVB) buy that was issued in late January. If SPX pushes higher, it might set up a new sell signal, but for now there is not an MVB signal in play.Equity-only put-call ratios are one of our most bullish indicators at this time, as these ratios continue to fall sharply. They have fallen below their February lows, which is bullish confirmation.There is a lot of room between their current position on their charts and the chart lows, which is where sell signals would normally take place. That is, the bulls have a lot of room to roam with this buy signal.Lawrence McMillanLawrence McMillanMarket breadth has been a laggard, though. That is not going to come as a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention to market internals over the last year or so. Breadth has struggled to keep pace for a long time.This past week, the only strong breadth day was March 29, when SPX gapped up over 4600. Still, the breadth oscillators remain on buy signals at this time. If SPX does move higher from here, we need to see breadth expand, lest we end up with a negative divergence such as we had for the last six months of 2021, which led to the correction that ensued at the beginning of 2022.New 52-week highs have finally eked out a gain over new 52-week lows. This has resulted in a buy signal from the NYSE data for this indicator. “Stocks only” and NASDAQ data have improved, too. At this point, the buy signal is tenuous, but it’s the first one this year for new highs vs. new lows.VIX indicators have turned more positive as well. Technically, the VIX “spike peak” buy signal of late February has “expired” (the trading system we built around peaks on the VIX chart calls for holding the position for 22 trading days, and that time has elapsed). But it was a successful signal, and one can still retain positions based on it, as long as stops are tightened and long call strikes are rolled higher.The trend of VIX is no longer bearish (that is, VIX is no longer in an uptrend), since VIX has closed below its 200-day moving average. However, that only removes the intermediate-term sell signal; it is not a buy signal. The VIX 20-day MA would have to cross below the 200-day MA in order for an intermediate-term buy signal to be generated.Lawrence McMillanThe last time that both VIX and its 20-day MA were below the 200-day MA was late last November (note the circle on the accompanying VIX chart). In early January, VIX crossed below the 200-day MA (similar to what has just happened now), but the 20-day did not, and eventually that led to trouble for the markets a couple of weeks later when VIX began to rise again. So stay alert.The construct of volatility derivatives remains in a modestly bullish state for stocks. The term structure of the VIX futures slopes upward in the front end, and the VIX futures are trading at healthy premiums to VIX. Also, the Cboe Volatility Index term structure slopes upward.In summary, there are no sell signals among our indicators at this time, and there are quite a few buy signals, the strongest being the equity-only put-call ratio. We are waiting for some of the “neutral” indicators to generate signals, but that could take some time to develop.So we are no longer carrying a “core” bearish position, and we are trading our shorter-term signals from the other indicators accordingly. Continue to tighten stops and roll call strikes higher as this rally proceeds.New recommendation: Russell 2000 ETFThe Russell 2000 was under extreme pressure for most of the first three months of this year. But now it appears to be recovering. There was a long support line at 209 last year, and then when that was broken on the downside this year, it became resistance. The Russell 2000 ETF is challenging that resistance now, and there are put-call ratio buy signals on the Index as well. The tech behemoth&#39;s gains helped alleviate the drag of Ford Motor Co, which slumped 9.7% after the automaker posted disappointing quarterly numbers.</p><p>The Labor Department&#39;s closely watched employment report showed nonfarm payrolls increased by 467,000 jobs last month, compared with the 150,000 jobs addition forecast by economists polled by Reuters.</p><p>The data for December was revised higher to show 510,000 jobs created, instead of the previously reported 199,000.</p><p>Fears of faster-than-expected rate hikes to curb a surge in inflation have haunted markets since the beginning of the year, with growth stocks such as technology feeling the brunt of that as investors pivot towards current cash flow from betting on future expectations.</p><p>&#34;A lot of the high-valuation stuff is going to continue to have trouble and it&#39;s already gotten smacked down a lot,&#34; said Louis Ricci, head of trading at Emles Advisors.</p><p>&#34;To us, this jobs report was affirmation that, yes, stocks are going to be jittery and there&#39;s going to be a lot of volatility.&#34;</p><p>However, the rate hike prospect has boosted U.S. Treasuries, with yields on the 10-year benchmark hitting their highest levels since December 2019, in the wake of the payrolls data.
