Unfortunately for investors of the video game retailer, that was the only day the shares rose last week. GameStop stock declined 6% for the week.</li>\n <li>Carnival fared better than GameStop, but it also went the wrong way. The world's largest cruise line operator sank nearly 1% during the holiday-abridged trading week.</li>\n <li>Finally, SentinelOne was the biggest sinker for the week. The cloud-based cybersecurity specialist put out strong quarterly growth in its latest quarter, but once again its margins continue to disappoint. The stock fell almost 8% for the week.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>The three stocks averaged a 5% decline for the week, as the <b>S&amp;P 500</b> took a 1.7% hit. That's another beat, and the market has come out ahead of my stocks to avoid for 10 of the past 12 weeks. Can I keep the hot streak going? I see <b>Oatly </b>(NASDAQ:OTLY), <b>Tesla Motors</b> (NASDAQ:TSLA), and <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SAVE\">Spirit Airlines</a></b> (NYSE:SAVE) as vulnerable investments in the near term. The stock peaked at $29 a month later, but it has given back most of those gains in falling back down to the high teens.</p>\n<p>Oatly is growing quickly, but last month's quarterly report was disappointing. The 53% top-line growth was less than analysts were targeting. It also posted another loss. In July, Oatly was hit by a 124-page report from short seller Spruce Point Capital Management, alleging that Oatly has overstated some of its financial metrics as well as its sustainability practices and its growth potential in China. A series of class action lawsuits have emerged in the process.</p>\n<p>Some Wall Street pros see this as a buying opportunity. The world's largest cruise line operator sank nearly 1% during the holiday-abridged trading week.\nFinally, SentinelOne was the biggest sinker for the week. The cloud-based cybersecurity specialist put out strong quarterly growth in its latest quarter, but once again its margins continue to disappoint. The stock fell almost 8% for the week.\n\nThe three stocks averaged a 5% decline for the week, as the S&P 500 took a 1.7% hit. That's another beat, and the market has come out ahead of my stocks to avoid for 10 of the past 12 weeks. Can I keep the hot streak going? I see Oatly (NASDAQ:OTLY), Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA), and Spirit Airlines (NYSE:SAVE) as vulnerable investments in the near term. The stock peaked at $29 a month later, but it has given back most of those gains in falling back down to the high teens.\nOatly is growing quickly, but last month's quarterly report was disappointing. The 53% top-line growth was less than analysts were targeting. It also posted another loss. In July, Oatly was hit by a 124-page report from short seller Spruce Point Capital Management, alleging that Oatly has overstated some of its financial metrics as well as its sustainability practices and its growth potential in China. And Savita Subramanian, head of U.S. equity and quantitative strategy at BofA Securities, published a pair of S&amp;P 500 targets that imply near-term losses and an at-best flat market through the end of next year.</p>\n<p>“Investor sentiment and valuations are extended—a lot of optimism is already priced in—and our Long-Term Valuation Model indicates negative returns for the S&amp;P 500 over the next decade (-0.8% annualized returns) for the first time since the Tech Bubble,” she writes.</p>\n<p>Subramanian expects the S&amp;P 500 to fall to 4250 at the end of this year, down about 6% from current levels around 4500. She sees the index rebounding to 4600 by the end of 2022, which would be a gain of barely 2% from today.</p>\n<p>Subramanian’s measure of investor sentiment—a contrarian indicator—is signaling euphoria, right when she’s beginning to worry about profit margins and earnings growth. She points to supply-chain disruptions and inflation in wages and input costs as coming headwinds to profitability. Add to that: Interest rates are likely to be higher rather than lower in the coming year—weighing on valuation multiples—and there’s not much for Subramanian to like on the S&amp;P 500 index level.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a8fde875fdd5b4e849b888c5d1316da5\" tg-width=\"515\" tg-height=\"591\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source:FactSet</span></p>\n<p>Sheets expects the Fed to announce its plans to begin reducing monthly asset purchases later this month, and for officials to also update their so-called “dot plot” of future interest-rate forecasts to show a faster-than-expected pace of hikes. Those should&nbsp;drive Treasury yields higher, Sheets argues, putting pressure on U.S. stocks.</p>\n<p>Congressional wrangling over traditional and “social” infrastructure bills—and potential higher corporate and personal taxes—will produce some negative headlines in the coming weeks. And economic and earnings growth rates have likely already peaked for the current cycle, Sheets writes.</p>\n<p>Going forward, there are two ways he sees things going: More fiscal stimulus, less Covid-19, and continued rapid U.S. economic growth would encourage the Fed to tighten policy, pushing yields higher and stocks lower. Alternatively, slowing growth would be a challenge to pricey stocks, and could prompt a “growth scare” selloff.</p>\n<p>Either way, the implication is for negative stock-market returns, and Sheets prefers European and Japanese equities to the S&amp;P 500. Morgan Stanley strategists have a mid-2022 S&amp;P 500 target of 4225, down about 6% from here.</p>\n<p>“This is a normal dilemma,” Sheets writes. “After the initial post-recession bounce, growth usually moderates. An improving economy usually brings more cost pressure and inflation as demand rises and labour markets tighten. It usually means central banks shift to tighten policy.”</p>\n<p>That’s not to say that an economic recession is on the horizon or that earnings will fall. It’s just a new phase in the cycle, and one in which the average stock doesn’t perform as well.</p>\n<p>Subramanian agrees: “This environment is bullish for interest rates, inflation, and companies geared to U.S. economic growth,” she writes. “We see several areas of the market as well-positioned despite our more cautious outlook on equities: buy inflation-protected yield, and U.S. small caps.”</p>\n<p>Small caps tend to do well when economic growth is strong, and Subramanian sees potential benefits from greater infrastructure spending by the government and capex investment from companies in the coming year. Plus, cheaper relative valuations than large caps make small caps less of a lift.</p>\n<p>The small-cap Russell 2000 index currently trades for about 29 times its estimated earnings over the next 12 months, versus its average of about 27.5 times over the past 25 years, according to data from Bloomberg. Add to that: Interest rates are likely to be higher rather than lower in the coming year—weighing on valuation multiples—and there’s not much for Subramanian to like on the S&P 500 index level.\nSource:FactSet\nSheets expects the Fed to announce its plans to begin reducing monthly asset purchases later this month, and for officials to also update their so-called “dot plot” of future interest-rate forecasts to show a faster-than-expected pace of hikes. Those should drive Treasury yields higher, Sheets argues, putting pressure on U.S. stocks.\nCongressional wrangling over traditional and “social” infrastructure bills—and potential higher corporate and personal taxes—will produce some negative headlines in the coming weeks. And economic and earnings growth rates have likely already peaked for the current cycle, Sheets writes.\nGoing forward, there are two ways he sees things going: More fiscal stimulus, less Covid-19, and continued rapid U.S. economic growth would encourage the Fed to tighten policy, pushing yields higher and stocks lower. Alternatively, slowing growth would be a challenge to pricey stocks, and could prompt a “growth scare” selloff.\nEither way, the implication is for negative stock-market returns, and Sheets prefers European and Japanese equities to the S&P 500. Morgan Stanley strategists have a mid-2022 S&P 500 target of 4225, down about 6% from here.\n“This is a normal dilemma,” Sheets writes. “After the initial post-recession bounce, growth usually moderates. An improving economy usually brings more cost pressure and inflation as demand rises and labour markets tighten. It usually means central banks shift to tighten policy.”\nThat’s not to say that an economic recession is on the horizon or that earnings will fall. It’s just a new phase in the cycle, and one in which the average stock doesn’t perform as well.\nSubramanian agrees: “This environment is bullish for interest rates, inflation, and companies geared to U.S. economic growth,” she writes. “We see several areas of the market as well-positioned despite our more cautious outlook on equities: buy inflation-protected yield, and U.S. small caps.”\nSmall caps tend to do well when economic growth is strong, and Subramanian sees potential benefits from greater infrastructure spending by the government and capex investment from companies in the coming year. Plus, cheaper relative valuations than large caps make small caps less of a lift.\nThe small-cap Russell 2000 index currently trades for about 29 times its estimated earnings over the next 12 months, versus its average of about 27.5 times over the past 25 years, according to data from Bloomberg. The stock has tumbled following 10 of the past 11 quarterly reports, averaging a 15% drop the trading day after its earnings call.</p>\n<p>The trend has gotten worse this year, despite the stock being <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the market's biggest winners of 2021. The stock took a 34% hit the day after its fiscal fourth quarterly report in March, and then a 27% plunge three months later with its fiscal first quarter performance.</p>\n<p>Is GameStop doing some interesting things to reinvent its business? Sure. Is it going to zero? I don't think so. However, the trend is your friend, and right now you may want to think twice about owning the video game retailer heading into its quarterly report. It will offer up its latest results shortly after Wednesday's close. Look for the stock to move sharply one way or the other on Thursday.</p>\n<h2>Carnival</h2>\n<p>Even cruising fans are coming after Carnival. Last week kicked off with 50 passengers from a recent sailing filing a class action lawsuit against the world's largest cruise line operator for not doing a better job of protecting its passengers on a cruise that had a COVID-19 outbreak. It would go on to extend its vaccination requirement through the end of the year, a move that will help make its ships safe but will also alienate a chunk of its audience.</p>\n<p>The stock would then go on to tumble along with other tourist stocks following the U.S.'s problematic monthly jobs report. This recovery is clearly going to take a lot longer than bulls were expecting.</p>\n<h2>SentinelOne</h2>\n<p>SentinelOne investors have to feel pretty good about where they are right now. The stock hit another all-time high on Friday, and it heads into this week's quarterly report with resounding momentum. SentinelOne is a fast-growing player in cloud-based cybersecurity. It knows how to assess threats, but can the same be said about its shareholders?</p>\n<p>SentinelOne trades at some pretty jaw-dropping multiples. It's an $18 billion market cap company with just $112.5 million in trailing revenue. We're talking about a top-line multiple north of 150, sky-high even by inflated SaaS stock standards.</p>\n<p>SentinelOne is often compared to <b>CrowdStrike</b> (NASDAQ:CRWD), but it's not fair. CrowdStrike is far more successful. It's generating 10 times the revenue, fetching a third of the revenue multiple, and its gross margin is actually improving for what is at least the fifth year in a row. SentinelOne may be growing slightly faster, but it's buying that growth. Its gross margin has been contracting as SentinelOne is getting aggressive in winning low-margin deals.</p>\n<p>Investors sending SentinelOne to its highest level since going public in June suggests it will need to exceed perfection in this week's financial update to keep the party going.
