Thesis</b></p>\n<p>After the recent correction in both EV and Chinese stocks, NIO(NYSE:NIO)is one of the stocks which reversed after the Chinese New Year, from the peak of USD 62.84 to USD 41.08 (As of 23 April 2021), a decline of almost 40%. However, the drivers of the firm remain unchanged and I see this as an opportunity for investors to buy into weakness and invest in the long-term growth story of NIO and the EV industry.</p>\n<p><b>Company Overview</b></p>\n<p>NIO Inc. designs, manufactures and sells automobiles. The Company offers electric vehicles and parts, as well as provides battery charging services.</p>\n<p>Its products include the EP9 supercar, ES8 7-seater SUV, ES6 5-seater SUV, EC6 5-seater crossover SUV and the ET7 autonomous sedan. Of which, the ES6 is the best-seller, followed by the EC6. The company also provides users with home charging (Nio House), and power express valet service (Nio Power) and other power solutions including access to public charging, access to power mobile charging trucks, and battery swapping. It also offers other value-added services such as service package, battery payment arrangement, and vehicle financing and license plate registration.</p>\n<p>Net sales are distributed geographically as follows: China (100%).</p>\n<p><b>Net Sales by Category of Products Breakdown</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c21f6be6ba561c2ee454c455e3e548d0\" tg-width=\"599\" tg-height=\"108\"><span>Source: Nio Inc. Financial Report 2020</span></p>\n<p>Net sales from various products are as follows: Vehicle (93.4%), Energy Package, Service Package and Other Embedded Services (6.6%).</p>\n<p><b>FY2020 Analysis</b></p>\n<p>NIO had an FY20 earnings beat. There is top-line growth of 172.8% with the bottom line growing by 30.2%. This is primarily due to a strong quarter 4, which benefited from the reopening of the economy in China. Q4 revenue grew 133% YoY and 47% QoQ. I also see this as a barometer of post-pandemic demand in FY21. Another positive sign is the improvement of Gross Profit Margin (GPM) to 17.2%, with the operating expense ratio (OER) narrowing to 31.2% in Q4.</p>\n<p>Outperformance in Q4 instills confidence that revenue is on track to grow by a forecasted 124.19% in 2021. In addition, the strong guidance given by senior management for Q121 was met according to&nbsp;the latest announcement; 20,060 vehicles delivered in the first 3 months, a 423% YoY increase.</p>\n<p><b>Unique Energy Solution</b></p>\n<p>Contrasting to Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA), NIO believes that drivers are now ready for \"Battery-as-a-service\" and offers an electric car with a swappable battery. There are a few strategic advantages to that move.</p>\n<p>One is the lower upfront EV cost which makes it a lot more palatable for consumers to adopt NIO cars vs. conventional ones and other competitors. Secondly, battery swapping is a great avenue to retrieve data points on battery performance and user preferences, which are critical in the long run. Thirdly, it distinguishes NIO from its fiercest competitor Tesla in the luxury EV market.</p>\n<p>Not forgetting the additional revenue stream from NIO House, NIO Power and other power solutions. The increase in the proportion of \"Other Sales\" to revenue affirms that.</p>\n<p><b>Extension of New Energy Vehicles (NEV) Subsidy to 2022</b></p>\n<p>NEV subsidy has been a key driver in the adoption of electric vehicles in China. In fact, the subsidy scheme has been around since 2009. Originally slated to end in 2020, the Chinese government decided to&nbsp;extend&nbsp;it for another 2 years but with tightened qualification.</p>\n<p>EVs over CNY300,000 are eligible for subsidies only if they support battery swapping. This favours NIO as it considerably reduces the prices of NIO models.</p>\n<p><b>Subsidy and Baas Impact on NIO prices</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/592515f3d0c93bc8141a5458f9f6007b\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"206\"><span>Source: Counterpoint Research</span></p>\n<p><b>Booming Industry</b></p>\n<p>China is the world's largest auto market and the pie for the EV market is huge. NIO being one of the market leaders, has a long runway to grow its business. In addition, the rising wealth and the fast-growing middle class, coupled with the dual circulation strategy will serve as a strong tailwind for the EV industry.</p>\n<p>According to the China Society of Automotive Engineers (China-SAE), Sales of NEV in China are expected to&nbsp;grow&nbsp;by 4x to 20% of overall new car sales by 2025, and to 50% by 2035. The commitment by Xi Jinping to&nbsp;cut greenhouse gases&nbsp;might potentially accelerate that growth as well.</p>\n<p><b>Risks</b></p>\n<p>Even though there are fears in the market over sudden interest rates hike by the Fed, it's extremely unlikely given the repeated commitment to hold rates till 2023. That being said, the increase in rates can be detrimental to NIO's valuation and will increase their financing cost.</p>\n<p>Continuous shortage of semiconductors has led to NIO's&nbsp;temporary suspension of production&nbsp;in March. Though this is unlikely to occur again, it remains as an overhang for the automobile industry.</p>\n<p>Worse-than-expected execution and delivery of vehicles will also be a drag to the business. I take comfort in Q1 delivery figures.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation</b></p>\n<p>There is a broad decline of EV counters in recent months due to the risk-off sentiment in the Chinese market and profit-taking after a record year. The climbing UST was also a huge downer for the equity market.</p>\n<p>However, I believe these are systematic factors, not specific to the firm. The structural story of the booming EV market remains intact. The fundamentals of NIO are still sound. As such, investors should take this opportunity to buy into weakness.</p>\n<p><b>Income Statement</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a01284e91684c315da90739a4ea9cbca\" tg-width=\"414\" tg-height=\"187\"><span>Source: Bloomberg, Proprietary Analysis</span></p>\n<p>Based on my forecast model, revenue is expected to grow 124% in 2021, on the back of 2.5x sales volume in 2021. GPM will improve to 18.1%, almost doubling 2020 GPM. Net Income will only improve marginally as R&amp;D expenditure is expected to weigh down heavily on net income.</p>\n<p><b>Target Price Matrix</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/df4ee8f7d3d56708e4bc373b3b145255\" tg-width=\"414\" tg-height=\"95\"><span>Source: Bloomberg, Proprietary Analysis</span></p>\n<p>Current P/S at 16.6x, although lower than XPeng (XPEV) and Li Auto (LI), embedded excessive optimism in it. A fairer P/S ratio for NIO is 10.0x, which is 39.75% lower than the current P/S.</p>\n<p>Using a P/S of 10.0x, I derive a target price of USD 51.41, which provides an upside of 25.14% return over a 12-month period.</p>\n<p><b>Conclusion</b></p>\n<p>My rating on NIO Inc. is Buy. All it would need is an announcement of the initiation of a dividend.</p><p>A dividend of 2% would be a good start, representing about 40% of projected 2021 earnings. It would probably lift the stock by broadening the base of potential investors to those who want or need dividends.</p><p>Berkshire has stepped up its share repurchases, buying back $15.7 billion of stock in the first three quarters of 2020, or about 3% of the shares outstanding. But with $146 billion in cash and projected earnings this year of $25 billion, it has the ability to pay a dividend as well as to buy back stock.</p><p>“Berkshire should pay a dividend; this would increase the appeal of the shares to investors who want current income,” says David King, co-manager of the Columbia Flexible Capital Income fund. “Given Berkshire’s size and financial strength, the company is unique in paying no dividend and that should be changed.”</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/014471f5dbd6554ccdd4f23756e41a51\" tg-width=\"963\" tg-height=\"627\"></p><p>Berkshire hasn’t paid a dividend for over 50 years. Why? Buffett’s view has been that a dollar in his hands is better than one in the hands of shareholders. That was long the case as Buffett worked his investment and acquisition magic, but it has been less true in recent years. Buffett declined to comment for this article.</p><p>In his 2012 annual letter, the CEO addressed the dividend issue, arguing that the better, and more tax-efficient, approach would be for investors who want income to sell a small portion of their Berkshire stock each year.</p><p>“First, dividends impose a specific cash-out policy upon all shareholders. If, say, 40% of earnings is the policy, those who wish 30% or 50% will be thwarted,” Buffett wrote. “Our 600,000 shareholders cover the waterfront in their desires for cash. Elon Musk tweeted about it.People are making some serious money off this single stock.</p><p>And it looks like this behavior could be repeated: Reddit posters are already searching for the next company to pounce on. Shares of AMC Entertainment, BlackBerry, Bed Bath &amp; Beyond and Expresshave soared, too.</p><p>It might be just enough to make you wonder: Am I missing something?</p><p>We polled financial advisers on both sides of the Atlantic and asked them that question. This is what they want you to know now right now:</p><p>Yes, You’re Smart. Don’t Let That Hurt You</p><p>With more time and cash than usual, many home-bound workers have started paying closer attention to markets. Many have been finding something surprising: they understand some pretty complex trading strategies.</p><p>Advisers caution that this doesn’t mean you should hop in.</p><p>“Just because you read an Investopedia article and you now know what a short squeeze is, there are enough other people out there who have also read that same article,” said Mike Caligiuri, founder and chief executive of Caligiuri Financial in New Albany, Ohio, describing one phenomenon behind GameStop’s performance this week.</p><p>Also read:&nbsp;What’s the $23 Billion GameStop Really Worth? Maybe $2 Billion</p><p>This collective knowledge has probably already increased shares to a peak, he said. “Eventually once they squeeze enough of these short sellers out, the opportunity for people to pile in and keep pushing up the share price is going to evaporate.”</p><p>You’re Not a Hedge Fund</p><p>One of the striking developments about this week’s Reddit wave was that GameStop boosters on social media effectively forced Melvin Capital, a $12.5 billion hedge fund, toback down from its short position on the stock—&nbsp;or its bet that shares of the video-game retailer will drop.</p><p>This might make you feel empowered to join in on the action. But advisers caution that one win for Reddit users is unlikely to translate into continuous, long-term gains for you.</p><p>“On the institutional side they’re all unified in their position and their rationale behind what they're doing,” said Dana Menard, the founder and CEO of Twin Cities Wealth Strategies Inc. Yet on a decentralized, digital community like Reddit, users will undoubtedly have myriad motives for boosting a stock, and your financial wellbeing is likely not one of them.</p><p>Large financial firms also have access to information individual investors just can’t get. Because of this, Menard says investors should be wary of stock boosters promoting their own research.</p><p>“While they’ve read about a couple indicators here or there, they certainly are not privy to the information that institutional investors have,” said Menard. “Unless these people are actually going into GameStop to interview the CEO and getting access to their books like institutional investors do, then it’s completely hearsay.”</p><p>You’re Probably Not Running for Governor of California</p><p>Yes, wealthy investors have recently revealed their stakes in GameStop, pumping the share price even more. Ryan Cohen, co-founder of Chewy Inc., is one of them. Chamath Palihapitiya, a venture capitalist and former Facebook Inc. executive, is another.</p><p>But they’re both billionaires. On Monday, Palihapitiya bothannounced he was running for governor of Californiaand invested in twoSPAC deals. Someone making those kinds of bets can likely afford to lose money on an investment.</p><p>Chances are your balance sheet looks a bit different. Menard encourages retail investors to think twice about any money they put in speculative shares, and only allocate what they can afford to lose completely.</p><p>That said, he recognizes that some investors may want to get in on the frenzy. And that’s fine, as long as it’s just a small portion of a portfolio.</p><p>“I call it their play money.
