Fundamentally, the company’s business is contracting and its business model is broken while its CEO, Ryan Cohen, does not seem to have a viable plan to turn the company around.</p><p>Also importantly, the valuation of GameStop stock is not particularly attractive and Cohen has a mixed record at best. On a more technical level, the meme stock rallies that had propelled the shares higher in recent weeks could not be sustained and appear to be over. Finally, other large investors, including the company and Cohen himself, justifiably seem to be unenthusiastic about GameStop’s shares.In light of these points, I advise investors to immediately unload all of the GameStop stock that they own.</p><h2 id=\"id_2990787061\">Poor Fundamentals and a Broken Business Model</h2><p>As I noted in an April 30 column, investment bank Wedbush warned that GameStop’s revenue would fall $150 million to $200 million annually. Analyzing the retailer’s fourth-quarter results, the bank noted that the firm’s revenue had dropped sharply during the holiday shopping season due to lower demand for hardware, fewer major releases of video-game consoles, and a decline in sales of its more profitable video games. Specifically, the firm’s top line sank 20% during the quarter versus the same period a year earlier.</p><p>Importantly, Wedbush noted the company did not have a “clear strategy to replace lost games sales” and added, “it may have trouble trimming costs fast enough to stem the growth of its losses.”</p><p>So far Wedbush’s gloomy assessment has proven to be rather prophetic. That’s because the company’s Q1 sales sank a huge 29% year-over-year to $882 million while the cash burned by its operating activities climbed to $109.8 million from $102.7 million in Q1 of 2023. Moreover, its cash, equivalents and restricted cash at the end of March came in at $1.017 billion, down from $1.079 billion during the time in 2023.</p><p>In the past, I’ve noted GameStop’s business is being steadily eroded by the fact most video games can be easily downloaded from their manufacturers, eliminating the need for players to buy them from GameStop. According to The Asian Investor, a Seeking Alpha columnist, the company’s financial metrics are still sinking as a result of this ongoing trend.</p><p>And Cohen, its CEO, still does not appear to have a plan to reverse this trend as he continued to emphasize his cost-cutting strategy during its annual meeting last month. As the old saying goes, companies “can’t cut their way to profitability.”</p><h2 id=\"id_80175062\">Cohen’s Spotty Record and an Unattractive Valuation</h2><p>Some of those who are bullish on GameStop stock may be pinning their hopes on Cohen. That’s especially true because, in addition to being CEO, Cohen has obtained a major stake in the firm. What’s more, the company’s board gave him the authority to invest the company’s money in other stocks.</p><p>It is true Cohen did an admirable job of turning pet e-commerce company Chewy, which he co-founded and led as CEO from 2011 to 2018, into a very successful firm. But on the other hand, he later plowed a great deal of money into Bed Bath and Beyond which subsequently went bankrupt. And I can’t help but feel he could have found a more promising company in which to invest than GameStop. Further, Cohen, who has been chairman of GameStop since 2021 and became its CEO in September 2023, clearly has not found a way to revitalize the retailer.</p><p>On the valuation front, the shares have a forward price-to-sales ratio of about 2.5 times. That’s not a very attractive valuation for a company with a broken business model, falling sales and increasing cash burn.</p><h2 id=\"id_568901422\">Technical Indicators Are Also Negative</h2><p>The latest meme stock rally that briefly propelled GameStop’s shares to new heights only lasted several days before almost completely dissipating. Specifically, GameStop jumped from $17.46 on May 10 to nearly $65 on May 14. But it was all downhill from there and by May 17, the shares price was down to $22.21. The stock closed at $23.65 on June 24. The briefness of the rally strongly indicates that meme stock investors have largely lost their power to boost the shares over significant periods.</p><p>Similarly, GameStop’s decision to sell 75 million of its shares on June 12 at an average price of about $28.50, rather than waiting for higher prices or buying back shares, suggests that the company doesn’t expect the meme frenzy to return with a vengeance anytime soon. They&#39;re thinking about what trends they want to buy into for the upcoming year and what stocks might help make them rich.</p><p>However, reflection is a two-way street. Just as there are great companies that can make investors wealthy, there are stocks that could cost investors a lot of money and should be avoided at all costs. Below are five stocks investors should consider selling right now.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9a8aaeae4465770036314f05da71f414\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p><h2>AMC Entertainment</h2><p>It&#39;s no secret that I believe movie theater chain <b>AMC Entertainment</b> (NYSE:AMC) is the most overvalued stock on Wall Street.</p><p>For those of you who may not have followed the AMC &#34;made for TV drama&#34; that&#39;s occurred this year, the company&#39;s shares are up more than 1,200% following an epic short squeeze earlier this year. Short-sellers (investors betting on a security&#39;s price to decline) were caught off-guard when AMC was able to save itself from imminent bankruptcy by selling 164 million shares of stock and issuing high-interest debt. But with this short squeeze now in the rearview mirror, AMC&#39;s abysmal operating performance, bloated balance sheet, and declining bargaining power with movie studios are in plain view.</p><p>For example, before the pandemic took effect, AMC was regularly securing theatrical exclusivity deals of 75 to 90 days. Nowadays, AMC is lucky to secure 45-day theatrical exclusivity. Even taking into account that most revenue is picked up in the first couple of weeks, this 30- to 45-day reduction in exclusivity is going to pinch AMC. It&#39;s also bad news considering that inflation-adjusted domestic box office sales have been in decline since 2002.</p><p>The bigger issue, as I&#39;ve stated over and over, is AMC can&#39;t make good on its liabilities. It has $5.45 billion in outstanding debt at roughly an 8% average interest rate. Keep that rate in mind, because lending rates are pretty much at historic lows. It also has over $1 billion in aggregate debt due in late 2026 and mid-2027 that&#39;s valued at more than 30% below face value. With the company hemorrhaging cash and not able to sell any additional stock thanks to its impassioned but misguided retail investors, it looks to be making a slow walk toward a chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization.</p><p>Suffice it to say, AMC Entertainment is a stock investors can confidently sell right now.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b45c4bd410befdb22fd801c7758dfb71\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"525\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p><h2>MicroStrategy</h2><p>A second stock investors should strongly consider selling right now is &#34;enterprise analytics software company&#34; <b>MicroStrategy</b> (NASDAQ:MSTR). I have &#34;enterprise analytics software company&#34; in quotations because CEO Michael Saylor has effectively ignored this stagnant part of the company&#39;s operations and turned MicroStrategy into a leveraged gamble on <b>Bitcoin</b> (CRYPTO:BTC).</p><p>According to the company&#39;s investor presentation earlier this month, it&#39;s holding 122,478 Bitcoin at an average price of $29,861.  The issue with this strategy is threefold, in my view.</p><p>First, I&#39;m not convinced Bitcoin is a sound investment. I recently outlined my views on Bitcoin, which centers on its false scarcity and it&#39;s less-than-stellar network performance. Bitcoin is constantly being out-innovated when it comes to payments and nonfinancial blockchain applications.</p><p>Second, MicroStrategy destroyed a reasonably safe balance sheet by piling on more than $2 billion in debt and issuing $900 million in stock, all of which was used to buy Bitcoin. Saylor has leveraged a public company&#39;s future on an asset that produces nothing.</p><p>And third, I believe Saylor is a poor leader. Earlier this year, Saylor told the world in an interview to &#34;go mortgage your house and buy Bitcoin with it.&#34; This is <i>incredibly</i> <i>bad</i> <i>advice</i>, and all the more reason to avoid MicroStrategy.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0a442339ef77177eb97fecfa070c7ac0\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p><h2>Cassava Sciences</h2><p>Another stock investors can sell right now is clinical-stage biotech stock <b>Cassava Sciences</b> (NASDAQ:SAVA).</p><p>Cassava made waves in the first quarter when it announced positive interim analysis data from its open-label study of simufilam for patients with Alzheimer&#39;s disease. The data showed both cognition and behavior score improvements at the six-month mark. Since Alzheimer&#39;s has no cure, any positive clinical data tends to be well-received.</p><p>But there are two glaring issues that should send folks scurrying to the sidelines. First of all, the track record of success for clinical-stage therapeutics targeting Alzheimer&#39;s disease is incredibly low. While we&#39;ve witnessed plenty of early stage success, virtually all late-stage Alzheimer&#39;s trials end in failure. This isn&#39;t a knock against the research, so much as recognizing that tackling the blood-brain barrier is tricky.</p><p>The second concern is that Cassava Sciences is facing allegations of manipulating its trial data. The company also announced in November that federal agencies are investigating its practices, without specifically naming the federal agencies in question. Keeping in mind that some of the allegations have come from firms shorting the stock, this is a headache you&#39;re better off letting someone else deal with.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b3b1defb6dba4980112c9a56af41a57c\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"393\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p><h2>GameStop</h2><p>Investors should also considering selling the original meme stock, <b>GameStop</b> (NYSE:GME).</p><p>A few weeks before AMC ascended to the heavens on its short squeeze, GameStop&#39;s high short interest attracted retail investors. In fact, GameStop&#39;s short interest was higher than any publicly traded company, as of mid-January, making it the perfect candidate for an epic squeeze. However, with this short-term event now over, investors are forced to grapple with GameStop&#39;s poor operating performance.</p><p>On the positive side, GameStop was able to raise sufficient capital from selling its stock to rid its balance sheet of debt. This net-cash position, coupled with the long-term growth potential of digital gaming, means there are no bankruptcy concerns, unlike with AMC.</p><p>But GameStop was notably late in shifting its strategy to include digital gaming. Nowadays, the company is busy shuttering stores in an effort to lower its expenses and back its way into the profit column. The company&#39;s large brick-and-mortar presence is expected to work against it for the foreseeable future, and could keep it from profitability for a few years.</p><p>Further, Wall Street has been unimpressed with management&#39;s lack of concrete steps that&#39;ll be taken to turn the business around. Even with a hefty cash balance, GameStop is grossly overvalued.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2bd808070a9dde55f37210b59edc2e23\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"393\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>A Tesla Model S charging. The company is on pace to deliver more than 800,000 EVs in 2021, and CEO Elon Musk has watched his company deliver its two largest operating profits since inception this year. The range, capacity, and power associated with Tesla&#39;s batteries has been superior as well.</p><p>Yet, these competitive advantages are unlikely to last given that all of the world&#39;s largest auto companies are throwing billions of dollars at EV research. For instance, <b>General Motors</b> and <b>Ford Motor Company</b> are respectively investing $35 billion and $30 billion in next-generation automobiles, with both companies bringing 30 new EVs to market by 2025. Tesla&#39;s first-mover advantage will fade sooner than later.</p><p>What&#39;s more, Tesla&#39;s income statement has been aided by selling Bitcoin at a profit earlier this year, as well as selling renewable energy credits (RECs) to other automakers. Many of us are risking what little we have left as a way of raging against a machine we feel is rigged against us. And we’re following in Marx’s footsteps.</p>\n<p>After a friend died in 1864, Marx received £820 in a bequest, his biographerrecounts. That comes out to roughly $151,500 today after adjusting for inflation and applying current conversion rates. Marx used a portion of his inheritance to become a financial speculator, often engaging in the same sort of penny-stock bubble schemes that the notorious WallStreetBets sub-Reddit has been accused of engaging in this year. “[Stocks] are springing up like mushrooms this year,” Marx wrote in a letter to his uncle, bragging that he had already made £400 from speculation. He added that many of his investments were typically “forced up to quite an unreasonable level and then, for the most part, collapse.”</p>\n<p>Marx’s trading stories are difficult to substantiate, but millennials’ love of meme stocks is very real. I’ve already made more this year from trading meme stocks and cryptocurrency than I have as a professional writer. I’ve come to look at the meme stock boom as millennials’ chance to finally build wealth. But if not, we’re content with making the investors largely responsible for our financial woes feel a bit of the pain they’ve inflicted on us. Short-sellers are losing their shirts to the tune of$4.5 billionon meme stocks so far.</p>\n<p>As a 34-year-old American, almost every generational stereotype applies to me. HuffPost’s Michael Hobbessummed upmillennials’ financial situation best in 2017: “My rent consumes nearly half my income, I haven’t had a steady job since Pluto was a planet and my savings are dwindling faster than the ice caps the baby boomers melted.”</p>\n<p>Perhaps because we’re the only American generation to live through two major recessions and two wars in our coming-up years, we’re the first generation to be financially worse off than our parents, despite beingbetter educatedon average. We paid for it, too. A year of college that cost $10,000 for boomers set millennials back more than $15,000 on average in inflation-adjusted dollars, according toBloomberg. Millennials of color, particularly Black millennials, have it worse. They graduated witheven more student debtthan their white classmates, arefar less likelyto be hired in white-collar professions, and their households earnjust 60%of what their white coworkers make.</p>\n<p>Millennials’ high-priced educations haven’t bought us much job security. A 2018 Gallup studycalledmillennials the “job-hopping generation.” Maybe, but not by choice. A 2019University of Chicago studyfound millennials actually long for a stable career. It should come as little surprise, then, that a generation plagued with job insecurity and mounting debt is leading the“baby bust.”The birth rate is at its lowest inthree decades. (And they still ask us when we’ll give them grandchildren!)</p>\n<p>If all that doesn’t make meme stocks and cryptocurrency more appealing, at least it might help explain why some of us just don’t care any more about playing it safe. I’ll be the first to admit that investing in meme stocks isn’t a sustainable way to build wealth. A lot more of us will get hurt than get rich. But I’m not primarily investing to make money: I want the investors who crashed the economy and got bailed out in my senior year of college—thustorpedoingmy career earning potential—to feel at least a little bit of the hardship they put my generation through. (Robinhooddeniesforced-selling occurred.) When it came to light that Robinhood had afinancial relationshipwith firms that help route its customers’ orders, it made a lot of newbie investors like me even more jaded about the markets.</p>\n<p>In March, when New York City opened movie theaters, I decided to buy AMC shares on a lark for $7 apiece. As of early June, my investment has appreciated in value by more than 550%. That could evaporate, but I’m taking a lesson from GameStop. Its stock is still trading at more than $250 per share despite starting the year under $20. I plan on continuing to hold my AMC shares in hopes the value will increase even more. When it’s finally time, I’ll sell half and re-invest my profits in cryptocurrency.</p>\n<p>When that happens, I’ll be far from the only millennial betting big on crypto. According to Business Insider, my generation ischiefly responsiblefor the sudden rise of cryptocurrency in 2021, in which both blue-chip digital currencies like Ethereum, as well as joke cryptocurrencies like Dogecoin, are thriving. Ethereum’s price has gone from $730.97 per coin on Jan. 1 to a peak of over $4,000 in May. Dogecoin hasappreciatedby more than 21,000% since its inception as a meme in 2013. (I’m still kicking myself for selling my Dogecoin when it was trading for less than 10 cents, even though I still made thousands in profit). Millennials’ commitment to crypto is now forcing the giants to play along: In March,Morgan Stanleybecame thefirst bankto offer Bitcoin funds to its wealthy clients. And as if on cue, now that the workers have made a little money in the rigged casino, U.S. regulators are reportedly preparing a “crackdown” on cryptocurrency.</p>\n<p>Millennials went through childhood being told we had to work hard to have financial security. Then we were told we had to shackle ourselves with debt to get a college degree that would get us a good job. Then we were told that only a lucky few actually build wealth from their jobs and that to have true financial success, we should invest. And then when we invested, we were told we were doing it wrong. I get the message. Millennials aren’t meant to win. Financial security isn’t for us.
