Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive, has said in a post on his platform X that the company’s new Optimus design will be complete later in 2024. Optimus is a general purpose, bi-pedal, humanoid robot that will be able to perform tasks that are “unsafe, repetitive or boring” according to Tesla. Musk said in his post the new design is “something special” but included no other details. Earlier this year he said the robot is still in development but may be ready to sell as soon as the end of next year. In Tesla’s annual shareholders in June, Musk made several bold claims about Optimus, calling it a combination of “C-3PO plus R2-D2”, and less expensive to buy than a car. He also claimed starting next year Tesla would have over 1,000 robots working within the company, and that Optimus can lift the company’s valuation, currently at around $822B, to $25T.
