Shares of the cloud- and edge-network-based internet infrastructure company are up 64% so far in 2021, building on the massive 345% run it had last year. This is far from a <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a>-off winner from the massive uptick in internet use during the pandemic, and Cloudflare's Q2 2021 earnings update continues to prove that.</p>\n<p>This is an \"expensive\" stock, but if you can stand to patiently wait through the wild ups and downs, this looks like a great business to own for the decade ahead as the cloud reshapes the global economy. Here are three reasons why.</p>\n<h2>1. Making the internet better for everyone</h2>\n<p>When Cloudflare made its public debut a couple years ago, it had a unique go-to-market strategy for an enterprise-grade cloud service: Launch new services for free for individual users, then go after bigger paying customers later. It's been incredibly successful.</p>\n<p>The company ended Q2 with 126,735 paying customers, an increase of 32% year over year. But Cloudflare has millions of individual users that don't pay a thing. This gives the company a massive base from which to grow as some of those users upgrade to premium products over time.</p>\n<p>It isn't just a marketing ploy, though. Cloudflare believes in making a better internet for everyone. Its recently announced Project Pangea embodies that. Project Pangea will provide underserved communities around the world with zero-cost access to the internet. How does that work? Imagine you and your neighbors built a road to a nearby freeway, only to be denied an on-ramp because the cost to built it is too high. Cloudflare will provide the internet on-ramp to these communities shut out of high-speed reliable access to the web.</p>\n<h2>2. Focus on the <i>ultra </i>long-term</h2>\n<p>Cloudflare's revenue in Q2 increased 53% year over year to over $152 million. Among paying users net-dollar based expansion was 124%, implying existing paying customers spent 24% more than they did last year. Free cash flow was negative $9.8 million, an improvement from the negative $20.2 million in 2020.</p>\n<p>While it's good news for shareholders that Cloudflare has nearly hit breakeven, that's not the primary concern right now. Co-founder and CEO Matthew Prince explained on the earnings call that a 20% operating profit margin is still the long-term goal -- but it's a&nbsp;<i>very</i> long-term goal. Prince said his company is \"not in a hurry to get there\" because it sees no shortage of new product launches it can continue to develop and roll out to its global network.</p>\n<p>Long story short, as Cloudflare starts to generate excess cash in the next year, it will aggressively plow that back into the business to promote expansion. Given the huge opportunity ahead (the global cloud industry will likely reach $1 trillion in spending per year by the end of this decade), the bottom line is of secondary importance right now.</p>\n<h2>3. Cash is a fantastic competitive advantage</h2>\n<p>Sometimes the best advantage an aggressively growing company like Cloudflare has is a large pile of cash on hand. And that's just what this company has. Of the $1.45 billion in total assets on Cloudflare's balance sheet, $1.03 billion is cash and equivalents, offset by convertible debt of just $401 million. This is an incredibly efficient business with plenty of optionality as it expands in the internet and cloud infrastructure space.</p>\n<p>For full-year 2021, management now expects revenue to be at least $629 million (compared to previous guidance for as much as $616 million), representing growth of at least 46% from 2020. Shares trade for some 36 times expected full-year sales to enterprise value (market cap plus debt, minus cash). It's quite the premium price, but Cloudflare has thus far demonstrated its ability to steadily grow at a pace at or over 50% -- even when lapping the pandemic lockdown bump it got last year. This is far from a one-off winner from the massive uptick in internet use during the pandemic, and Cloudflare's Q2 2021 earnings update continues to prove that.\nThis is an \"expensive\" stock, but if you can stand to patiently wait through the wild ups and downs, this looks like a great business to own for the decade ahead as the cloud reshapes the global economy. Here are three reasons why.\n1. Making the internet better for everyone\nWhen Cloudflare made its public debut a couple years ago, it had a unique go-to-market strategy for an enterprise-grade cloud service: Launch new services for free for individual users, then go after bigger paying customers later. It's been incredibly successful.\nThe company ended Q2 with 126,735 paying customers, an increase of 32% year over year. But Cloudflare has millions of individual users that don't pay a thing. This gives the company a massive base from which to grow as some of those users upgrade to premium products over time.\nIt isn't just a marketing ploy, though. Cloudflare believes in making a better internet for everyone. Its recently announced Project Pangea embodies that. Project Pangea will provide underserved communities around the world with zero-cost access to the internet. How does that work? Imagine you and your neighbors built a road to a nearby freeway, only to be denied an on-ramp because the cost to built it is too high. Cloudflare will provide the internet on-ramp to these communities shut out of high-speed reliable access to the web.\n2. Focus on the ultra long-term\nCloudflare's revenue in Q2 increased 53% year over year to over $152 million. Among paying users net-dollar based expansion was 124%, implying existing paying customers spent 24% more than they did last year. Free cash flow was negative $9.8 million, an improvement from the negative $20.2 million in 2020.\nWhile it's good news for shareholders that Cloudflare has nearly hit breakeven, that's not the primary concern right now. Co-founder and CEO Matthew Prince explained on the earnings call that a 20% operating profit margin is still the long-term goal -- but it's a very long-term goal. Prince said his company is \"not in a hurry to get there\" because it sees no shortage of new product launches it can continue to develop and roll out to its global network.\nLong story short, as Cloudflare starts to generate excess cash in the next year, it will aggressively plow that back into the business to promote expansion. That ranks August as the eleventh-worst month of the year for the index.</p>\n<p>Andunderperformance in Augustisn't a fluke. It can sometimes come in dead last.</p>\n<p>\"August is the worst ... S&amp;P 500 month during 1988 through 2020,\" says Stock Trader's Almanac. \"In post-election years since 1950, August is still ranked no higher than #11 while average performance slips deeper into negative territory.\"</p>\n<p>More recently, though, August spared S&amp;P 500 investors some of the pain.</p>\n<p>Last August, for instance, the S&amp;P 500 vaulted 7% higher during the month. It was at that time investors began to anticipate the reopening of the economy. But in just the prior August of 2019, the S&amp;P 500 slipped 1.8%.</p>\n<p>But not all S&amp;P 500 stocks suffer in August.</p>\n<p><b>Technology Is The S&amp;P 500 Place To Be In August</b></p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/JE\">Just</a> <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> S&amp;P 500 sector routinely skates through August. And during August the past five years, the tech sector gained 4.2% on average. That's a particularly strong showing if you consider the S&amp;P 50o only rose 1.6% on average in August going back to 2016.</p>\n<p>And it's not just the overall S&amp;P 500 tech sector that outperforms in August. Drilling down into the individual tech stock winners tells the same story. Six out of the eight top performing S&amp;P 500 stocks in Augusthail from the tech sector.</p>\n<p>Take the No. 1 performer in the month: high-end computer chip maker Nvidia. It topped the S&amp;P 500 during August in each of the past five years. But it's also put up an average gain in the month of 10.3%. All eyes are on whether Nvidia can pull it off again. Shares are already up nearly 50% this year.</p>\n<p>Analysts are looking for the company in August to report 53% lower adjusted second-quarter profit of $1.02 share. But Nvidia has a knack at overdelivering. Profit in the first-quarter topped expectations by more than 350%.Should you buy Nvidia stock now?</p>\n<p>Another big tech winner in August isMicrosoft. The software giant's shares pushed 4.3% higher in August, on average, the past five years.</p>\n<p><b>Get Ready For August S&amp;P 500 Surprises</b></p>\n<p>August is only starting, and already investors are coming off some surprises. It's risen more than 8.5% in August, on average, in the past five years. Shares are already up 28.6% this year. Why? The communications firm reported, in July, a profit of 20 cents a share. That demolished expectations by more than 185%. They also all posted average gains in the month of 4% or more.\nAnd that qualifies as a good August — which for most people ranks among the very worst months of the year.\nAugust Is Usually Tough For The S&P 500\nGoing back to 1950, the S&P 500 slipped 0.2% in August on average, says Stock Trader's Almanac. That ranks August as the eleventh-worst month of the year for the index.\nAndunderperformance in Augustisn't a fluke. It can sometimes come in dead last.\n\"August is the worst ... S&P 500 month during 1988 through 2020,\" says Stock Trader's Almanac. \"In post-election years since 1950, August is still ranked no higher than #11 while average performance slips deeper into negative territory.\"\nMore recently, though, August spared S&P 500 investors some of the pain.\nLast August, for instance, the S&P 500 vaulted 7% higher during the month. It was at that time investors began to anticipate the reopening of the economy. But in just the prior August of 2019, the S&P 500 slipped 1.8%.\nBut not all S&P 500 stocks suffer in August.\nTechnology Is The S&P 500 Place To Be In August\nJust one S&P 500 sector routinely skates through August. Andit's technology.\nThe Technology Select Sector SPDR (XLK) is the only sector out of the 11 that topped the S&P 500 in each of the past five years. And during August the past five years, the tech sector gained 4.2% on average. That's a particularly strong showing if you consider the S&P 50o only rose 1.6% on average in August going back to 2016.\nAnd it's not just the overall S&P 500 tech sector that outperforms in August. Drilling down into the individual tech stock winners tells the same story. Six out of the eight top performing S&P 500 stocks in Augusthail from the tech sector.\nTake the No. 1 performer in the month: high-end computer chip maker Nvidia. It topped the S&P 500 during August in each of the past five years. But it's also put up an average gain in the month of 10.3%. All eyes are on whether Nvidia can pull it off again. Shares are already up nearly 50% this year.\nAnalysts are looking for the company in August to report 53% lower adjusted second-quarter profit of $1.02 share. But Nvidia has a knack at overdelivering. Profit in the first-quarter topped expectations by more than 350%.Should you buy Nvidia stock now?\nAnother big tech winner in August isMicrosoft. The software giant's shares pushed 4.3% higher in August, on average, the past five years.\nGet Ready For August S&P 500 Surprises\nAugust is only starting, and already investors are coming off some surprises. Expect more.\nTake Twitter for instance. It, too, is a strong August performer. It's risen more than 8.5% in August, on average, in the past five years. Shares are already up 28.6% this year. Why? The communications firm reported, in July, a profit of 20 cents a share. That demolished expectations by more than 185%. That ranks as one of thetop surprises in an already robust second-quarter profit reporting season.\nSo, yes, August isn't usually great for the S&P 500.
