Phoenix Suns star Chris Paul turns into a basketball for State Farm, cave men hawk Geico, and Progressive's (PGR) long-running character Flo does absolutely nothing.</p>\n<p>The sector's unlikely penchant for jokes owes in large part to the Aflac (AFL) duck, which made its debut more than 21 years ago and almost immediately transformed the fortunes of the company. But the ad campaign almost never happened.</p>\n<p>Aflac CEO Dan Amos tells Yahoo Finance in a recent interview that he was \"very reluctant\" to go forward with the ad because it risked making light of the company's name. But the ad made Aflac a household name, exploded sales, and was soon released by the company's Japan operation to similar effect, he said.</p>\n<p>\"The advertising agency that we had was sitting on a park bench in New York City, and heard the ducks quacking, and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of them said, 'That is what we need to go for,'\" Amos said. \"I said that I would never do it — at that time you didn't have the Geico ads, you didn't have all of the other ads.\".</p>\n<p>\"We took a big chance making fun of our name, because you're not just doing it, you're actually making fun of your name,\"he says. \"And yet, it forever changed our life and doubled our business in three years in the U.S.\"</p>\n<p>The duck even got the job over actor Ray Romano, then a major TV star on \"Everybody Loves Raymond,\" who taped a test commercial with Aflac.</p>\n<p>\"It tested an 18 — 50% better than anything we had ever tested,\" Amos says. \"The Aflac Duck tested a 27. Three, almost two and a half times better. So which one do you go with?\"</p>\n<p>While Geico's gecko may not have been on screens when Aflac designed its duck, the gecko was the first to be released into the wilderness. It made its television debut in 1999, and the Aflac duck followed soon after on Jan. 1, 2000.</p>\n<p>\"It was Y2K and we thought we were gonna have all these problems,\" he adds. \"So we had all these ads that we had booked on CNN, and other places to be ready for it.\"</p>\n<p>\"Well, then when there were no problems, [and] they didn't have anything to talk about with the news. So our commercials ran over and over and over again. And overnight, we realized that we had a hit. We actually had more hits on the internet the first week than we had the entire year before,\" he says.</p>\n<p>Over the next 14 years, Aflac's brand recognition leapt from 11% to 94%, making it one of the most well-known companies in the world, Aflac says. From January 2001 to January 2014, Aflac's stock rose 85%, far-outpacing the S&amp;P 500 (^GSPC), which rose 35% over that same period.</p>\n<p>Initially, the voice behind the duck was longtime comedian Gilbert Gottfried. But the company fired Gottfried in 2011, after he tweeted a series of insensitive jokes about a tsunami that struck Japan, where Aflac operates a significant portion of its business. In the ensuing years, he climbed the ranks as president and then CEO. In 2001, he was also named the company's chair.</p>\n<p>Speaking to Yahoo Finance, Amos explained how the company adapted the duck for a Japanese audience, changing the premise of the sketch and even the volume of the quack. But the ad made Aflac a household name, exploded sales, and was soon released by the company's Japan operation to similar effect, he said.\n\"The advertising agency that we had was sitting on a park bench in New York City, and heard the ducks quacking, and one of them said, 'That is what we need to go for,'\" Amos said. \"I said that I would never do it — at that time you didn't have the Geico ads, you didn't have all of the other ads.\".\n\"We took a big chance making fun of our name, because you're not just doing it, you're actually making fun of your name,\"he says. \"And yet, it forever changed our life and doubled our business in three years in the U.S.\"\nThe duck even got the job over actor Ray Romano, then a major TV star on \"Everybody Loves Raymond,\" who taped a test commercial with Aflac.\n\"It tested an 18 — 50% better than anything we had ever tested,\" Amos says. \"The Aflac Duck tested a 27. Three, almost two and a half times better. So which one do you go with?\"\nWhile Geico's gecko may not have been on screens when Aflac designed its duck, the gecko was the first to be released into the wilderness. It made its television debut in 1999, and the Aflac duck followed soon after on Jan. 1, 2000.\n\"It was Y2K and we thought we were gonna have all these problems,\" he adds. \"So we had all these ads that we had booked on CNN, and other places to be ready for it.\"\n\"Well, then when there were no problems, [and] they didn't have anything to talk about with the news. So our commercials ran over and over and over again. And overnight, we realized that we had a hit. We actually had more hits on the internet the first week than we had the entire year before,\" he says.\nOver the next 14 years, Aflac's brand recognition leapt from 11% to 94%, making it one of the most well-known companies in the world, Aflac says. From January 2001 to January 2014, Aflac's stock rose 85%, far-outpacing the S&P 500 (^GSPC), which rose 35% over that same period.\nInitially, the voice behind the duck was longtime comedian Gilbert Gottfried. But the company fired Gottfried in 2011, after he tweeted a series of insensitive jokes about a tsunami that struck Japan, where Aflac operates a significant portion of its business. Morgan’s Samik Chatterjee expects that to change as the year progresses into the second half.\n“Apple shares have underperformed the broader market by a significant magnitude in 1H21,” the 5-star analyst said. “The upside pressure on volumes for the iPhone 12 series, historical outperformance in the July-September time period heading into launch event, and further catalysts in relation to outperformance for iPhone 13 volumes relative to lowered investor expectations implies a very attractive set up for the shares in the second half of the year and thus we expect AAPL shares to outperform the broader market materially in 2H21.”\nChatterjee puts the lackluster 1H showing down to a lack of catalysts since last year’s final quarter, after the stock outperformed during 2020.\nIn fact, this year is a bit of an anomaly as Apple has consistently outperformed the S&P 500 over the past seven years, on four occasions by more than 25% and twice by more than 55%.\nIt should also be noted that most of the gains have usually been accrued in the year’s second half, and AAPL shares always outpace the market between July and September, which is the period leading up to the fall launch of the iPhone’s next model.\nTherefore, with the anticipated iPhone 13 launch coming up, this year should be no different. However, there are two reasons why this year’s 2H performance could be better than usual. One, the underperformance so far leaves the shares attractively priced.\nAdditionally, Chatterjee thinks that heading into the iPhone 13’s launch, investor expectations are relatively low, and as such, with a “multi-year 5G tailwind to the replacement rate and a larger installed base supporting stronger run-rate of annual volumes relative to current investor expectations,” the analyst thinks Apple will not only sell more units than anticipated but thinks the stock is set up to rally in the months ahead.\nTo this end, Chatterjee reiterated an Overweight (i.e., Buy) rating on AAPL shares and raised the price target from $165 to $170. Instead, they’ve built synthetic versions of equities that track some of the world’s biggest companies. In essence, the anti-establishment ethos of the crypto world is being applied to a rough facsimile of the stock market.</p>\n<p>Fake versions ofTesla Inc., Apple Inc., Amazon.com Inc. and other big stocks, as well as a few popularexchange-traded funds, have been created by the projectsMirror ProtocolandSynthetixover the past year. The tokens, and the programming that allows them to trade, are engineered to reflect the prices of the securities they track without any actual purchases or sales of the real stocks and ETFs involved. So far, volumes are just a tiny fraction of those on regulated exchanges. But for crypto enthusiasts, the potential upside is huge.</p>\n<p>The synthetic shares join a strange new world of assets such asdigital artworkand highlights of NBA games now trading on blockchains. Yet, unlike the modern art and dunks of the non-fungible token universe, these instruments raise questions about how they fit into a global stock market and brokerage industry governed by thousands of pages of rules from dozens of countries.</p>\n<p>At the moment, it’s a case of innovation that’s way ahead of regulation.</p>\n<p>Which is exactly how&nbsp;Do Kwon&nbsp;likes it. The co-founder and CEO of Terraform Labs, the South Korean company that created the Mirror Protocol on its Terra blockchain, in the mode of Vlad Tenev or Chamath Palihapitiya. DeFi “is so powerful in unlocking financial services for disenfranchised people around the world,” he said via email, that “it’s better to move fast and break things. Waiting for fragmented regulatory frameworks to crystallize before innovating is counterintuitive.”</p>\n<p>Synthetic Assets</p>\n<p>For Kwon and other proponents of these new synthetic assets, avoiding the various rules and barriers of the financial world is a feature, not a bug. It opens up opportunities for wealth creation currently only available to a fortunate few, he said. Users can trade the tokens anonymously 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from anywhere, unhindered by capital controls,“know your client”rules imposed on broker-dealers, and other frictions of the traditional financial system.</p>\n<p>Kwon said Terraform Labs doesn’t generate any revenue from fees charged on the Mirror Protocol. Those go to users as an incentive to provide liquidity. Rather, the firm profits via a cryptocurrency it created that tends to increase in value as projects like Mirror grow in popularity.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/603592b93f5f75f55f7927b44372308b\" tg-width=\"1000\" tg-height=\"1044\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>The interface on Terraswap to buy Mirrored Tesla</span></p>\n<p>So how exactly do these synthetic equities work? Well, it’s complicated.</p>\n<p>But to oversimplify, under the Mirror Protocol, the idea is to keep prices of the synthetic -- or “mirrored” -- equities in the ballpark of the real thing by offering incentives for traders to arbitrage price discrepancies and manage the actual supply of tokens. Users can create, or “mint,” new tokens when prices are too high by posting collateral, and destroy, or “burn,” tokens when prices are too low,driving the priceup or down.</p>\n<p>Through these incentives, the “synths closely track the price of the real-world asset,” Kwon said. “But they’re still only tokens on a blockchain providing explicit price exposure.”</p>\n<p>‘Trojan Horse’</p>\n<p>The tokens trade on decentralized, automated markets like Uniswap andTerraswap, which allow users to buy and sell the assets directly on the blockchain -- a different model than centralized crypto exchanges run by the likes of Coinbase Global Inc. and Binance.</p>\n<p>So far, trading volumes likely aren’t high enough to cause executives at Nasdaq or the New York Stock Exchange to lose much sleep. Mirrored Apple tokens, for example, have a market capitalization of about $34 million, according toCoinmarketcap.com. That compares with about $2.3 trillion for the real stock, and is around 1/1,000th the size of the novelty cryptocurrency Dogecoin.</p>\n<p>A comparison of prices between various mirrored equities and the real securities at various times over the past week shows that the difference between the two can range from a penny to several dollars. For example, in afternoon trading on June 30, the price of Mirrored Tesla on CoinMarketCap.com was almost $6 higher than the $684 level the real shares were trading for on the stock market.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/37c316b1a6a4c8847b072741e58a2c89\" tg-width=\"1000\" tg-height=\"617\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Mirrored Tesla’s price from CoinMarketCap.com</span></p>\n<p>Yet, the projects bear watching by traditional finance institutions, given some of the ambitions in the DeFi space. As digital-asset management firm Arrington XRP Capital put it in areportanalyzing and describing its support for Mirror, the goal of DeFi is not to simply improve a user’s experience with the banking system, but rather to dismantle it entirely. These new synthetic equities, the firm wrote, “are one of DeFi’s most obvious Trojan Horses into legacy markets.”</p>\n<p>A spokeswoman for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and representatives for Nasdaq, the listing exchange for most of the equities being copied by synthetics, declined to comment.</p>\n<p>“Since these synthetic products are not regulated and not traded on a national securities exchange, I would think that the SEC would take issue with them,” said Joseph Saluzzi, the co-head of equity trading at Themis Trading who has providedtestimonyto Congress on market issues. “According to the SEC, their mission is to protect investors, maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitate capital formation. This sounds like an investor-protection issue to me.”</p>\n<p>Binance, the world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange, has alreadydrawn the attentionof Germany’s financial regulator by offering tokens that are tied to the performance of popular U.S. stocks but backed by the actual equities. Binance may have violated securities rules when it issued the tokenized shares of Tesla, MicroStrategy Inc. and Coinbase, BaFin said in April.</p>\n<p>Regulators could also start looking more closely at the DeFi space following some spectacular blowups in stablecoins -- digital currencies designed to closely track the value of national currencies (and which Mirror traders use as collateral to mint new tokens). Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, an enthusiastic and influential investor in DeFi,recently calledfor regulations to address the cryptocurrencies after losing money when one crashed in value to zero.</p>\n<p>Billionaire crypto investor Mike Novogratz, founder and chief executive of Galaxy Digital, recently tweeted that players in DeFi markets may regret it if they don’t start abiding by so-called know your client and anti-money laundering rules.</p>\n<p>“Invest in a compliance layer now or pay the piper later,”he wrote. “If we want this ecosystem to grow we need to recognize we need to operate within the rules society sets.”</p>\n<p>Kwon said Terraform Labs has not yet had any conversations with regulators in the U.S. or elsewhere about mirrored equities. Instead, they’ve built synthetic versions of equities that track some of the world’s biggest companies. In essence, the anti-establishment ethos of the crypto world is being applied to a rough facsimile of the stock market.\nFake versions ofTesla Inc., Apple Inc., Amazon.com Inc. and other big stocks, as well as a few popularexchange-traded funds, have been created by the projectsMirror ProtocolandSynthetixover the past year. The tokens, and the programming that allows them to trade, are engineered to reflect the prices of the securities they track without any actual purchases or sales of the real stocks and ETFs involved. So far, volumes are just a tiny fraction of those on regulated exchanges. But for crypto enthusiasts, the potential upside is huge.\nThe synthetic shares join a strange new world of assets such asdigital artworkand highlights of NBA games now trading on blockchains. Yet, unlike the modern art and dunks of the non-fungible token universe, these instruments raise questions about how they fit into a global stock market and brokerage industry governed by thousands of pages of rules from dozens of countries.\nAt the moment, it’s a case of innovation that’s way ahead of regulation.\nWhich is exactly how Do Kwon likes it. The co-founder and CEO of Terraform Labs, the South Korean company that created the Mirror Protocol on its Terra blockchain, in the mode of Vlad Tenev or Chamath Palihapitiya.
