Still, it was enough to draw in $756 billion in funds on June 17, a 45% increase from when the Fed was paying a flat zero.</p>\n<p>That’s “just another affirmation of the glut of cash seeking any positive return,”&nbsp;Jonathan Cohn, a strategist at Credit Suisse Group AG, told Bloomberg.</p>\n<p>The massive flows of short-term money are mostly invisible to the general public, but they’re vital to big players such as money market mutual funds and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two giant companies&nbsp;in government conservatorship whose purchases of mortgage loans affect rates for homebuyers. Fannie, Freddie, and the money funds are believed to be among the big players that poured their spare cash into the Fed’s&nbsp;reverse repurchase facility—a kind of overnight parking lot for money—on June 17.</p>\n<p>There are differences of opinion over whether the Fed’s rate increase was necessary or wise. Zoltan Pozsar, the global head of short-term interest rate strategy for Credit Suisse, says the hike—as small as it might seem to a layperson—was too big. “I was arguing that there is no need to adjust anything,” Pozsar says. For the big players that are taking advantage of the Fed’s facility, he says, “It’s like Christmastime in the middle of summer.”</p>\n<p>Pozsar argues that the previous rate of zero was high enough because it ensured that the federal funds rate would not fall below the Fed’s target range of&nbsp;zero to 0.25%:&nbsp;Presumably&nbsp;no bank&nbsp;would lend federal funds at less than zero if it&nbsp;could earn zero&nbsp;by stashing money at the Fed’s reverse repurchase facility. Raising the overnight reverse repurchase rate to 0.05%, Pozsar says, makes it too much of a lure for money. “They basically turned an innocent facility that was serving as a floor to something more menacing that’s sucking money out of the system,” he says.</p>\n<p>Not everyone sees things&nbsp;that way. The rate hike certainly made life easier for money funds, which strive not&nbsp;to “break the buck”—that is, give investors back less money than they put in. It was&nbsp;hard to meet that commitment when the funds were earning zero and had to cover salaries and other expenses.</p>\n<p>The fear that the Fed’s facility will suck too much money out of the banking system (which Iwrote aboutlast week) is theoretical for now because banks are actually trying to shed deposits for various reasons, including regulations that make it costly for them to take in deposits and stash the money in Treasury securities or reserves at the Fed. Granted, Vertex hasn't delivered anywhere close to the kinds of returns that AMC and Dogecoin have in recent months. It even just reported a setback for <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of its pipeline candidates. However, this big biotech holds an advantage over both of them that should make a huge difference over the long run: Vertex enjoys a monopoly in its core market.</p>\n<p>There are currently four approved drugs in the U.S. and Europe that treat the underlying cause of rare genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF), and Vertex markets all of them. Its newest CF drug, Trikafta/Kaftrio, is its biggest winner yet. The drug is just beginning to pick up momentum in Europe.</p>\n<p>What about potential rivals? <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWOA.U\">Two</a> other companies have clinical-stage candidates that target the underlying cause of CF. However, those experimental drugs are only in phase 2 testing, and there's no guarantee the candidates will be more effective than Vertex's products that are already on the market. Vertex seems likely to dominate the CF market, at least through the next decade.</p>\n<p>Let's compare Vertex's monopoly to the competitive dynamics for AMC and Dogecoin. AMC isn't the only theater chain. Its top rivals include <b>Cineplex</b>, <b>Cinemark</b>, <b>Marcus</b>, and Regal Entertainment. Streaming services that allow people to watch new movies at home are also a competitive threat to AMC.</p>\n<p>Dogecoin isn't the only cryptocurrency vying for investors' favor, either. There are other cryptocurrencies that seem even more likely to succeed over the next several years than Dogecoin.</p>\n<p>The bottom line is that Vertex has a moat, while AMC and Dogecoin don't. Over the long run, moats matter.</p>\n<h2>Looking to the future</h2>\n<p>Dogecoin likely has a hit-or-miss future. It either will become a top cryptocurrency that enjoys enduring use or it will fade away.</p>\n<p>On the other hand, AMC will probably experience a solid rebound as life returns to normal with fears about the COVID-19 pandemic waning. That should boost the company's sales this year and into 2022. But how long can AMC's growth story last? Movie-theater attendance was declining somewhat even before the pandemic. It won't be surprising to see that trend resume after an initial resurgence.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Vertex continues to focus on treating the remaining 10% of CF patients that its current drugs can't help. The company is also developing experimental therapies for other rare diseases, including alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, APOL1-mediated kidney diseases, beta-thalassemia, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and sickle cell disease.</p>\n<p>Vertex isn't limiting itself to just rare diseases, though. It's testing an experimental drug for the treatment of acute pain following certain types of surgeries in phase 2 clinical trials. The biotech is evaluating a gene therapy in a phase 1/2 study that holds the potential to essentially cure type 1 diabetes</p>\n<p>The important thing to note is that Vertex doesn't need all of these programs to be successful. If only <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> or two of them pan out, this biotech stock should deliver tremendous returns.</p>\n<h2>Beyond the hype</h2>\n<p>I think it's quite possible that AMC and/or Dogecoin will outperform Vertex over the short term. If you're a short-term trader looking to capture quick profits, that's great. However, my focus from the beginning has been on the long term.</p>\n<p>Sooner or later, the hype for AMC and Dogecoin will die down. What happens then? Short-term traders will turn to another stock or cryptocurrency to ride.</p>\n<p>Vertex, though, is working every single day to treat and even cure diseases that cause suffering for many people around the world. The purchase includes more than fifty loans for about sixty commercial aircrafts, according to a company statement. The loans, on average, yield in the mid-single digits and have about four years remaining before maturing.</p>\n<p>KKR’s acquisition adds to its growing presence in the aviation space. It agreed to buy Atlantic Aviation from <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MQG.AU\">Macquarie</a> Infrastructure Corp for $4.48 billion in cash, assuming its debt and restructuring obligations, Bloomberg News reported earlier this week. The firm also provided a credit facility of as much as $150 million to California-based private aviation company Jet Edge International.</p>\n<p>It’s launching the platform at a time when banks have been stepping back from the sector and commercial aircraft owners have a greater need for stable, long-term financing options, Dan Pietrzak, partner and co-head of private credit at KKR told Bloomberg in an emailed statement.</p>\n<p>“AV AirFinance is an exciting expansion of our asset-based finance strategy into directly originated commercial aircraft loans, which represent an attractive downside protected investment opportunity for our long-term capital,” Pietrzak said.</p>\n<p>Siggi Kristinsson has been tapped as AV AirFinance’s chief executive officer. Kristinsson co-founded and served as CEO of Volito Aviation Services AB, which provided debt origination and advisory services to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and other financial institutions, according to the statement. Ryan Jasinski will join from CIT to focus on loan origination in the Americas. CIT Group disclosed to investors that it had entered into a definitive agreement to sell the portfolio in a first-quarter earnings presentation in April.</p>\n<p>“We are very excited to be entering the market at this time to participate in the social and economic recovery, which is driving demand for commercial aviation and increasing the importance of the long-term financing solutions that support the industry,” Kristinsson said.</p>\n<p>The acquisition of the portfolio is being funded by separate accounts managed by KKR. The purchase includes more than fifty loans for about sixty commercial aircrafts, according to a company statement. The loans, on average, yield in the mid-single digits and have about four years remaining before maturing.\nKKR’s acquisition adds to its growing presence in the aviation space. It agreed to buy Atlantic Aviation from Macquarie Infrastructure Corp for $4.48 billion in cash, assuming its debt and restructuring obligations, Bloomberg News reported earlier this week. The firm also provided a credit facility of as much as $150 million to California-based private aviation company Jet Edge International.\nIt’s launching the platform at a time when banks have been stepping back from the sector and commercial aircraft owners have a greater need for stable, long-term financing options, Dan Pietrzak, partner and co-head of private credit at KKR told Bloomberg in an emailed statement.\n“AV AirFinance is an exciting expansion of our asset-based finance strategy into directly originated commercial aircraft loans, which represent an attractive downside protected investment opportunity for our long-term capital,” Pietrzak said.\nSiggi Kristinsson has been tapped as AV AirFinance’s chief executive officer. Kristinsson co-founded and served as CEO of Volito Aviation Services AB, which provided debt origination and advisory services to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and other financial institutions, according to the statement. Ryan Jasinski will join from CIT to focus on loan origination in the Americas.
