The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond fell to 2.143%. Yields move inversely to prices.\n\nTreasury yields rose on Friday, after the Commerce Department reported that the core personal consumption expenditures price index rose 3.4% in May from a year earlier.\nThis marked the fastest increase since April 1992 and met the Dow Jones estimate for gains in the PCE index.\nInvestor attention this week will be focused on the June jobs report, which the Labor Department is set to publish on Friday.\nEconomists are expecting that nonfarm payrolls increased by 683,000 in June. It's also bundled with other Apple services like Music and iCloud in packages called Apple One starting at $14.95 per month. But a lot of subscribers aren't paying.\nApple gave away a huge number of Apple TV+ of subscriptions to get the service off the ground. Starting in September 2019, anyone who bought an Apple product — an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, or Apple Watch — got one year of Apple TV+ for free. During the pandemic, Apple extended the offer twice for people whose trial periods were about to expire.\nThe majority of Apple TV+ subscribers are still on the promotional offer, with 62% of current subscribers accessing Apple TV+ through a promotional package, according to survey data by Moffatt Nathanson published in January. Apple hasn't said how many subscribers the service has, but it has sold hundreds of millions of iPhones and other gadgets since late 2019.\nNow Apple is starting to wean Apple TV+ subscribers off the free plan.\nOn July 1, people who buy Apple products will be eligible for only 3 months of free Apple TV+, instead of a year, and people who already cashed on the trial can't get it again. Also during July, the first subscribers to activate the promotional offer will start to be automatically billed for the service after having access to its shows for nearly 21 months for free.\nThis creates a huge test for Apple.\nWill the millions of users currently on a free trial end up signing up for the $5 per month service or an Apple bundle because they can't go without Apple's shows? Or will they cancel?\nOthers may simply forget that they were on the trial and not immediately notice the new charges.\nApple reducing its reliance on free trials for Apple TV+ is a \"critical point\" for the service, said Parks Associates analyst Steve Cason, who follows the streaming industry.\n\"For newer or smaller services, partnerships and promotions are an invaluable customer acquisition tool,\" Cason said. \"A large percentage of folks follow through, they truly love the service and continue it. Or they forget they gave the service their credit card.\"\nFewer TV shows and movies than rivals\nApple TV+ has always had fewer hours of movies and TV compared to other streaming services, which may be a reason why it debuted with a lower price, versus to $8 per month for Disney+ or $8.99 for a standard Netflix plan.\nWhen Apple TV+ was launched in November 2019, it had nine original, Apple-backed shows and movies. Now it has around 87 original TV shows, movies and documentaries. That’s nowhere near what other services offer.\nHulu, for example, has thousands of shows, according to Reelgood data, many of which already have large fanbases because they were broadcast on TV.Netflix and Amazon Prime Video both have more than 1,000 licensed and original shows for customers to watch.\nApple has not licensed any non-exclusive shows for its service, and instead is only offering shows it financially backed. It hasn’t spent to buy media companies to fill out its back catalog, unlike Amazon, which recently agreed to acquire MGM Studios.\nMost of Apple’s shows star big-named producers and actors, such as Oprah and Steven Spielberg. However, talent is not exclusively tied to the company. Oprah’s biggest interview in recent memory, with Prince Harry, was broadcast on CBS. Steven Spielberg recently signed a deal with Netflix, too.\nStreaming ratings are notoriously secretive, and Apple’s never revealed how many viewers any of its shows have.\nWhen Apple executives are asked about the success of its content, they point to award nominations. In a press release last week,Apple said that its original shows have received 112 awards and 389 nominations, including Critics Choice awards, Golden Globes, and Oscars.\n“No matter what device you enjoy it from, it is a milestone period for Apple TV+, racking up many new award nominations and wins, including its first Oscar nominations,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said on a call with analysts in April.\nCook went on to praise one show in particular, “Ted Lasso,” which looks like Apple TV+‘s first big hit. The breezy comedy about an American soccer coach, which was based on an NBC advertisement poking fun at Americans’ ignorance about soccer, found a fanbase with its low-stakes banter.\n“Ted Lasso” season 2 will premier on July 23 and Apple will release new episodes weekly with an aim to get current subscribers on the trial hooked and potentially find new subscribers.\nA promotional email sent to subscribers this week highlights “Ted Lasso” in addition to a second season of “The Morning Show” starring Jennifer Aniston premiering in September. Even with its minuscule $1 share price, almost 268 million shares were held short as of May 28. But there's a very good reason for folks to be pessimistic: Sundial's management team has been a disaster.</p>\n<p>Beginning in October 2020, management began raising capital to strengthen the company's balance sheet. Although all debts have now been paid off, the equity offerings have just kept coming. In the span of seven months and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> week, the company's outstanding share count ballooned from 509 million to 1.86 billion. Existing shareholders have been buried by management's ill-advised capital raises, and with 1.86 billion shares outstanding, the company has virtually no chance of ever producing meaningful earnings per share.</p>\n<p>Making matters worse, Sundial Growers' cannabis operations have gone up in smoke. Management made the decision to switch away from wholesale marijuana to higher-margin retail cannabis. Unfortunately, this shift has caused sales to plummet. Whereas most North American pot stocks are thriving, Sundial is stuck in reverse.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8abdae403dddfa42107e06ea5bfddf39\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BLNK\">Blink Charging</a></h2>\n<p>Electric vehicles (EVs) and ancillary EV players could be some of the biggest winners over the next decade. But short-sellers are pretty convinced that <b>Blink Charging</b> (NASDAQ:BLNK), a provider of EV charging accessories and networks, won't be <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of them. More than a third of the company's float (its tradable shares) are currently held short.</p>\n<p>Arguably the biggest red flag for Blink Charging is that the company doesn't look to be investing any of its more than $230 million in cash and marketable securities into research and development (R&amp;D), the cornerstone growth driver of the EV industry. Without R&amp;D, there's absolutely nothing that separates Blink Charging from its competition.</p>\n<p>Just as unnerving is the fact that Blink's sales are dubiously low for a company sporting a $1.7 billion market cap. During the first quarter, the company brought in only $2.2 million in revenue, with product sales driving the entirety of its year-over-year growth. The combination of charging service revenue and network fees actually <i>declined</i> from the pandemic-impacted first quarter of 2020. With Blink still many years away from being relevant, it makes for an easy stock to avoid.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b45c4bd410befdb22fd801c7758dfb71\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"525\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>MicroStrategy</h2>\n<p>To some, <b>MicroStrategy</b> (NASDAQ:MSTR) CEO Michael Saylor is a hero or revolutionary for his willingness to add <b>Bitcoin</b> (CRYPTO:BTC) to his company's balance sheet. But I'm more inclined to side with the short-sellers who find his actions reckless.</p>\n<p>It's one thing for a company to use a percentage of excess cash to purchase Bitcoin to carry on the balance sheet. What Saylor did was issue over $2 billion in debt -- capital that MicroStrategy doesn't have -- to purchase additional Bitcoin. According to the company, it owns 105,085 Bitcoin tokens at an average price of $26,080. Taking into account that Bitcoin has had three separate drawdowns of at least 80% over the past decade, this all-in strategy could easily backfire.</p>\n<p>To boot, Saylor has seemingly ignored the company's business-intelligence segment, which is working on a six-year streak of declining sales. He's effectively turned MicroStrategy into a leveraged shell company that's completely dependent on an external factor (Bitcoin), rather than innovation. But investors have a tendency to overestimate how quickly new technology will be adopted, and they sometimes overlook that not all industry players will succeed. That could well be the case for the heavily short-sold electric truck company <b>Lordstown Motors</b> (NASDAQ:RIDE).</p>\n<p>In a span of six days in June, Lordstown has:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Seen its CEO and CFO step down;</li>\n <li>Responded to a short-seller report from Hindenburg Research by noting that some statements regarding its pre-orders weren't entirely accurate; and</li>\n <li>Noted in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that its current level of cash and cash equivalents won't be sufficient to launch and commercially scale its EVs.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Building an EV company from the ground up is costly, time-consuming, and not without speed bumps (just ask <b>Tesla</b>). With a new management team taking the wheel and the company's cash situation perilous at best, it's not even clear if Lordstown will survive. While Reddit traders would like to believe that manipulation is the reason behind AMC's high short interest, it actually has to do with AMC's poor operating performance and the mediocre outlook for the theater industry as a whole.</p>\n<p>For the past 19 years, ticket sales for the movie industry have been in a fairly steady decline. This is likely to continue with streaming services pushing traditional theater chains for exclusivity, and select studios shortening the exclusivity time frame of films at theaters. Even with a larger share of the theater market, AMC's pie continues to shrink.</p>\n<p>The bigger issue for AMC is that the performance of its stock doesn't come close to matching its underlying operating results. People might be returning to the theater, but AMC is still burning through a lot of capital, and it's many, <i>many</i> years away from turning a profit. That's a problem for a company with more than $5.4 billion in outstanding debt -- and the pricing of its 2027 bonds shows it.</p>\n<p>AMC is being driven by hype and misinformation, and it's not clear how long this irrationality will last.
