Chinese stocks dominate the emerging market indexes these days, accounting for about 40% of the typical fund.</p>\n<p>Widely held funds like the Vanguard Emerging Markets Stock FundVEMAX,-0.98%and its ETF equivalentVWO,-0.68%,iShares Core MSCI Emerging MarketsIEMG,-0.88%and iShares MSCI Emerging MarketsEEM,-0.96%lost 5% of their value in a few days, though they’ve since rallied.</p>\n<p>That’s left them down about 5% since the start of the quarter on July 1 (American Funds’ actively managed New World fundNEWFX,-1.08%has held up better, and is down 2.5%)</p>\n<p>More important for long-term investors, this comes after a pretty dismal decade for emerging markets. Even factoring in reinvested dividends, the typical EM stock fund has banked a total return of 35% over the past 10 years.</p>\n<p>Over the same period an investor in the S&amp;P 500 U.S. stock indexSPX,-0.54%,for example through the SPDR S&amp;P 500 TrustSPY,-0.49%,has gained over 300%.</p>\n<p>With that in mind, does the typical saver even need, or want, an emerging markets fund in their 401(k) or IRA?</p>\n<p>Ian Weinberg, a financial planner at Family Wealth &amp; Pension in Woodbury, N.Y., gives the case against. Emerging markets—and even developed international markets such as Europe and Japan—give you more risk and less return, he says. “Foreign equities have high correlation to U.S. equities in falling U.S. markets, and then have lower correlation to U.S. markets when they are rising,” he tells me. “That means simply that foreign stocks have begun to provide poor risk and return characteristics. Would you invest in something that goes down as much or more than domestic stocks, and goes up less than domestics stocks when they’re running?”</p>\n<p>Foreign stocks today look cheap compared to the U.S. for a reason, he says: “Europe can’t get out of the current negative interest environment, and emerging markets, dominated by China, are subject to governmental intervention and stability risk.” Meanwhile, U.S. companies all have big overseas exposure anyway, he points out. You can get all the exposure to international growth opportunities through the S&amp;P 500.</p>\n<p>He’s not alone. Berkshire Hathaway’sBRK.A,-0.42%BRK.B,-0.53%chairman and investment genius Warren Buffett says most people are probably best off holding 90% of their portfolio in a U.S. stock market index fund and 10% in U.S. Treasury bills.</p>\n<p>But it takes two points of view to make a market, and plenty of advisers take the other side of the argument.</p>\n<p>“Emerging markets should definitely be a part of any person’s long term allocation,” says financial planner Ken Nutall in West Grove, Pa. Emerging markets tend to “zig” when other markets “zag,” he says. Emerging markets also offer a lot of possible growth. “They do tend to be a volatile but over longer periods they do tend to outperform,” he says.</p>\n<p>“Ordinary investors should absolutely have a weighting&nbsp;toward emerging markets within their long-term investment strategy,” agrees Jay Karamourtopoulos, a financial planner in Boston. “While global economies are now more connected than ever, there are still diversification benefits to investing in emerging markets,” he says. He adds: “Most investors have a home country bias to begin with. Couple that with the strong U.S. returns over the past decade and an argument can be made that many individual investors are severely overweight domestic stocks.”</p>\n<p>“Yes, of course people should be invested in emerging markets,” agrees planner Chris Chen in Lincoln, Mass. “It is part of diversification.” China, he says, is the second largest economy in the world and will soon be the largest. “How do you ignore them?”</p>\n<p>And many advisers say that one reason to look more closely at foreign markets—including emerging markets, and developed markets such as Europe—right now is precisely because they have done so badly for a decade. Emerging market stocks have underperformed U.S. stocks over the past decade, says planner Robert Cheney in Palo Alto, Calif. But that means “emerging markets are [now] cheaper on a relative value basis…and there may be a reversion to the mean over the next decade.</p>\n<p>“Emerging markets in general have had a tough time over the last 10 years,” says planner Brian Fischer in Miami. “However,” he adds, “there have been individual years recently and other stretches historically where they’ve relatively done much better. There is a diversification benefit, it’s just timing that benefit is incredibly difficult.”</p>\n<p>Those shying away from emerging markets because they’d done poorly of late, adds adviser Jordan Benold in Frisco, Texas, might bear in mind “the fundamental philosophy of buying low and selling high.”</p>\n<p>For my own part, I’ve been covering financial experts for over two decades and these things seem to have gone in cycles. I remember back in 2010, when emerging markets were on top, mainstream opinion was cheering them aggressively. If the cycle turned again, I wouldn’t be surprised.</p>\n<p>A big challenge today is that China so completely dominates emerging markets that your typical EM fund isn’t really that diversified. Add to that the issue that China is a rigged market controlled by the Communist Party (and the risks China may pose to Taiwan, by the way). Planner Chris Chen sees merit in splitting out China and non-China emerging markets as separate allocations. This makes a lot of sense.</p>\n<p>Franklin Templeton&nbsp;offers&nbsp;a China ETFFLCH,-0.41%with a moderate 0.19% annual charge. BlackRock’s iShares offers an emerging markets fund that excludes China, iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ex China ETFEMXC,-1.36%,charging 0.25% a year. It’s top country holdings are 22% Taiwan, 21% South Korea, 16% India and 9% Brazil.</p>\n<p>Joachim Klement, strategist at Liberum and a top research figure at the CFA Institute, says that the most truly diversified stock portfolio is one that follows, not the U.S. or any other country or region, but the MSCI All-Country World IndexACWI,-0.56%,which includes the U.S., Europe, Japan, Australasia, emerging markets and everywhere else. That, incidentally, is the strategy of some low-cost exchange-traded funds such as the Vanguard Total World Stock ETFVT,-0.56%and SPDR Portfolio MSCI Global Stock Market ETFSPGM,-0.71%.</p>\n<p>Note that&nbsp;they still hold&nbsp;nearly 60% of their money in U.S. stocks (which is about three times the U.S. share of world economic output, according to the IMF) because of U.S. valuations. Meanwhile emerging markets account for a modest 11% of the fund. This year, the company's marketplace is expected to control roughly $0.40 of every $1 spent online in the United States, according to an April report from eMarketer. The next closest competitor is <b>Walmart</b>, which'll handle about 7% of all U.S. online retail.</p>\n<p>Amazon has been able to pivot its incredible online retail success into signing up more than 200 million people worldwide to a Prime membership. While Prime members enjoy free two-day shipping and access to streaming content, the lure for Amazon is that Prime fees generate tens of billions in added revenue that it can use to undercut brick-and-mortar retailers on price and buoy its margins.</p>\n<p>What you might not realize about Amazon is that it's overwhelmingly dominant in a second industry, as well. Amazon Web Services (AWS) brought in 32% of global cloud infrastructure spending in the first quarter, per Canalys. Cloud infrastructure is still, arguably, in the early innings of its expansion, and it's a considerably higher margin segment for Amazon than retail or advertising. Thus, AWS is going to send Amazon's operating cash flow to the moon as it grows into a larger percentage of total sales.</p>\n<p>For the past 11 years, Wall Street and investors have consistently valued Amazon at a multiple of 23 to 37 times its cash flow. Since we don't get to choose when we get sick or what ailments we develop, there's a consistent demand for healthcare services, drugs, and devices, no matter how well or poorly the U.S. and global economy are performing.</p>\n<p>What makes Bristol Myers Squibb such a special company is its organic growth potential and astute dealmaking. To tackle the former, Bristol Myers and <b>Pfizer</b>&nbsp;co-developed the world's leading oral anticoagulant, Eliquis, which looks to be on pace for more than $10 billion in sales this year for Bristol. There's also cancer immunotherapy Opdivo, which is being examined in dozens of ongoing clinical trials. Opdivo is already bringing in about $7 billion annually, and could push higher with continued label expansion opportunities. All told, eight brand-name therapies are on track for at least $1.2 billion in annual sales this year, based on extrapolated Q1 sales totals.</p>\n<p>On the dealmaking front, Bristol Myers Squibb hit a home run when it acquired cancer and immunology drugmaker Celgene in 2019. Celgene's superstar is multiple myeloma drug Revlimid, which brought in $12.1 billion in sales last year and has been growing by a double-digit percentage annually for more than a decade. Longer duration of use, label expansions, improved cancer screening diagnostics, and strong pricing power have all fueled Revlimid's growth. Best of all, it's protected from a large wave of generic competition until the end of January 2026. But General Motors and its peers are the verge of taking advantage of an epic vehicle replacement cycle as consumers and businesses make the shift to electric vehicles (EV).</p>\n<p>Initially, General Motors was going to devote $20 billion to EV investment by mid-decade. However, in November, the company upped its expected outlay to $27 billion by 2025, with the ultimate goal of bringing 30 new EVs to market globally. Some of this capital will be used to bring EVs to market earlier than initially planned, as well as to develop GM's battery technology. With IHS <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MRKT\">Markit</a> forecasting that 10% of all U.S. vehicle sales will be electric by 2025 (up from 1.8% in 2020), a hefty investment in this changing landscape makes sense for GM.</p>\n<p>Equally important are the company's ambitions overseas -- especially in China, the largest auto market in the world. By 2035, the Society of Automotive Engineers of China anticipates that half of all vehicle sales will be some form of alternative energy. Tesla has dabbled in SUVs with the Model Y and Model X, but they were not really designed as rugged off-road vehicles and operate more as crossover-size vehicles. <b>Ford</b> and <b>General</b> <b>Motors</b> (NYSE:GM) both have electric trucks on the near horizon, but nothing the average consumer can yet access. That means the Rivian vehicles slated for release this month could be the first real truck and SUV manufacturer to hit the market.</p>\n<p>What makes the R1T truck and R1S different from most EVs is that they're purpose-built from the ground up to be electric vehicles. They come with over 300 miles of range, the ability to drive through three feet of water, and acceleration of zero to 60 miles per hour in as little as three seconds. And towing ability of up to 11,000 pounds puts them on par with the best-selling trucks in the world.</p>\n<p>The R1S SUV is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of the only EV SUVs that can comfortably fit seven passengers, opening up a large market of buyers who need more space than most of the crossover-size EVs hitting the market from <b>Volkswagen</b>, Ford, GM, and others can offer. And with both its truck and its SUV, Rivian is selling vehicles to buyers already spending over $50,000, so its $70,000 price tag won't come with much sticker shock for buyers who need the size or capabilities.</p>\n<h2>A big buyer is already on board</h2>\n<p>The drivetrain platforms for the R1T and R1S are the same, but they're not the only vehicles being built. The first vehicles to come off the production line will actually be delivery trucks for Amazon. Amazon has reportedly ordered 100,000 Rivian trucks to be delivered by the end of 2030, and that could keep the company running for a long time as it builds out infrastructure to meet consumer demand.</p>\n<h2>What to expect from an IPO</h2>\n<p>Rivian isn't quite a pre-revenue company now that its production line is operating, but it's close. Outside of limited deliveries to Amazon, the company won't report much revenue pre-IPO -- but that will change quickly. Deliveries of R1T trucks are expected to start soon, with broader deliveries beginning in early 2022.</p>\n<p>Bloomberg has reported that Rivian could seek a $70 billion valuation in an IPO, with <b>Goldman Sachs</b>, <b>JPMorgan</b>, and <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MSTLW\">Morgan Stanley</a></b> signed on as advisors. That's a lofty valuation for a company this early in its growth cycle, but I do think Rivian is building a valuable brand and products that will appeal to the masses. Only time will tell if this valuation is too high.</p>\n<p>I don't often get excited about pre-IPO companies because we don't know a lot about their financials and it can be very early to judge what they'll look like as more mature companies. Not only did Tesla's (NASDAQ:TSLA) 52-week-high nearly triple its 52-week-low, Lordstown Motors (NASDAQ: RIDE), Nikola (NASDAQ:NKLA), and others have hit the market -- or will shortly -- to both wide acclaim and some derision.\nBut that isn't the electric-vehicle-related stock (soon to IPO) that I'm excited about. There is an EV company potentially hitting the market later this year called Rivian and it's a start-up that's already raised $8.2 billion from the likes of Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Ford (NYSE:F), Cox Automotive, and other big investors with real potential.
