Market Recap | Stocks End Higher as Investors Mull Economic Data, Fed MinutesU.S. stocks rose Thursday as investors parsed earnings reports, economic data and minutes from the Federal Reserve's latest policy meeting for clues about the trajectory of the economy and interest rates. The $S&P 500 index(.SPX.US)$ rose about 0.2% in 4 p.m. trading, after closing lower Wednesday. The $Dow Jones Industrial Average(.DJI.US)$ ticked up about 18 points, or around 0.1%. The $Nasdaq Composite Index(.IXIC.US)$ added about 0.2%. Stock indexes have climbed in recent weeks on signs that inflation was moderating and hopes that the Fed would ease off from its aggressive campaign of rate rises. The rally -- which had pushed the S&P 500 to its highest level since April -- has been tempered after minutes from the Fed's July meeting, released Wednesday, indicated that policy makers could keep raising rates to curb inflation. Still, officials said they would be cautious, acknowledging the risk that too much tightening could cause economic pain.$SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$ View on SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)BullishBearish

Musk Says He Was Joking About Buying Manchester United. But Tesla Investors Still Have to CareElon Musk tweeted Tuesday evening that he was buying the iconic British football club $Manchester United(MANU.US)$. He later said he was joking. But like it or not, the tweet is another thing for Tesla investors to worry about. For starters, " Tesla is Elon Musk" as Roth Capital analyst Craig Irwin put it to Barron's back in April when discussing any potential impact on $Tesla(TSLA.US)$ stock arising from Musk's potential purchase of $Twitter(TWTR.US)$. Anything that affects Musk affects Tesla and Tesla stock. It's tough, after all, to imagine another person running Tesla. The issue came up at Tesla's annual shareholders meeting in August when Future Fund Active ETF cofounder Gary Black asked Musk about management succession in light of his Twitter bid. "I intend to stay with Tesla as long as I can be useful," answered Musk. Still, if Musk ends up being forced to buy Twitter by the courts -- Twitter is suing to close the deal on its original terms -- he would run or own Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, Neuralink and Twitter. He won't be buying Manchester United. Just after midnight Eastern time, Musk wrote on Twitter: "No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I'm not buying any sports teams." But it's still a lot. These things can steal some of Musk's time or create distractions that can become investor-level events. There also is the obvious issue that Manchester United is a publicly traded company. If that stock moves it will matter to regulators. Musk, after all, has more than 100 million Twitter followers. His Manchester United tweet had generated more than 25,000 comments about three hours after it was posted. The market's collective eyes will be trained on Manchester United stock Wednesday, as well as Musk's Twitter account looking for further clarification.$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ $SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$ $Nasdaq 100 Trust(QQQ)$ View on Nasdaq 100 Trust(QQQ)BullishBearish

Apple to start collecting 'Netflix tax' in Chicago next month: reportLast month, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) settled its lawsuit against Chicago over the city's so-called "Netflix tax" and now the tech giant will start collecting the tax, starting September 15, Bloomberg reported. The news outlet notes that Apple (AAPL) had challenged that the municipal tax - enacted in 2015 to collect a 9% levy on streaming music, video and gaming services - violated the U.S. Constitution and the Internet Tax Freedom Act. However, the lawsuit was settled and the case was "dismissed with prejudice and without costs to either party." The lawsuit was settled in late July, according to previous media reports. Bloomberg obtained settlement documents that show Apple (AAPL) will collect a tax on all of its streaming services for Chicago-based customers, except for Apple News+. The news outlet also noted that Apple (AAPL) is not responsible for collecting back taxes, which could have amounted to perhaps millions of dollars. Apple (AAPL) shares closed down fractionally on Wednesday, finishing at $173.03. As Apple (AAPL) searches for new ways to generate revenue, it is "likely" to include advertising in apps such as Apple Maps, Apple TV+, Apple Books and more, according to recent media reports.$Apple(AAPL)$ $Nasdaq 100 Trust(QQQ)$ $SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$ View on SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)BullishBearish

Microsoft Up 20% Since July - Is It Time To Buy?This tech stock giant has a performance history to be proud of. Since 2016, the price has moved 475%, handsomely rewarding investors. It has also been a pleasant journey for investors, barring the decline caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, with the price generally trading inside a bullish channel. Without question, all companies aspire to have a similar history of performance. However, Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) was also not exempt from this year's declines, with the stock price dropping by over 30%. Compare that to PayPal Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL), which fell by almost 80%, and you can see why this stock is always a consideration for investors. The question is: If you do not have a position on Microsoft, when is the correct time to buy? This depends on if you choose to be aggressive or conservative. Either way, you still want to wait for a high-probability entry point. This is where patience comes in. The Daily TimeframeFor Aggressive Investors/TradersIdeally, you want to wait for the stock's price to confirm a bull trend above the daily 200 simple moving average. The advantage to this approach is that you get in early and make more profit as the stock price pushes further up.$Microsoft(MSFT)$ $SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$ $Nasdaq 100 Trust(QQQ)$ View on Nasdaq 100 Trust(QQQ)BullishBearish
