Yet at points in May in the heat of the negotiations, investors demanded yields surpassing 7% on Treasury bills maturing around the projected default date, treating them as similar to junk debt. </p><p>The idea that repayment of US Treasury debt would be a major battleground in the clash between political parties was jarring the first time Congress neared the fiscal cliff, when Tea Party Republicans employed the strategy in 2011. </p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The newly empowered GOP House majority of that time made holding up a debt limit increase the focal point of their campaign to wring broad fiscal changes from President Barack Obama. Regardless of whether conservatives believe House Speaker Kevin McCarthy didn’t deliver enough on their priorities, the threat was effective in forcing concessions from Biden.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">In other words, the default crisis works. </p><p>The willingness to take the nation to the financial cliff reflects a broader shattering of governing norms as the US is more polarized. Compared to protesters storming the US Capitol because their candidate lost an election, a potential missed debt payment doesn’t seem to most voters all that bad. And it flows from the Republican Party’s new populist energy pushing the GOP away from its traditionally strong ties to corporate America.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Fitch Ratings pointed to political strains that transcend individual leaders when it announced Friday that it would keep the nation on credit watch despite congressional approval of the debt-limit deal. </p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">“There has been a steady deterioration in governance over the last 15 years, with increased political polarization and partisanship as witnessed by the contested 2020 election, repeated brinkmanship over the debt limit and failure to tackle fiscal challenges,” the ratings agency said in a statement explaining its reasoning.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The budget bill reduces projected cumulative deficits over the next decade and ensures the US will continue to meet its commitments, Treasury Department Spokeswoman Lily Adams said in a written response to questions. “The Treasury market remains the safest, deepest and most liquid market in the world,” she said.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Michael Gapen, an economist for Bank of America, warned in a note to clients Friday that partisan divisions leave open the risk of a US government shutdown later this year despite the spending guideposts enshrined in the debt-limit deal.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">“While one brinkmanship risk has been removed from the table, one remains,” Gapen wrote.</p><p>The US is unusual among major democracies in having a debt limit that can be a catalyst for crisis. In fact, NVDA stock is nearly 100% above its 200-day moving average. So, investors could consider taking profits now, but maybe not sell unless other red flags appear. The Nvidia earnings report, including a super-bullish sales forecast, drew superlatives on Wall Street.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company earned an $1.09 a share on sales of $7.19 billion in the quarter ended April 30. On a year-over-year basis, Nvidia earnings dropped 20% while sales declined 13%.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">In Q1, Nvidia&#39;s data-center sales rose 14% to $4.28 billion. Its gaming-chip sales declined 38% to $2.24 billion.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Analysts expect triple-digit earnings gains for the next several quarters, including the current quarter, which ends in July. They see Nvidia earnings rebounding more than 116% in fiscal 2024, on a 48% sales gain.
