Not all EV startups are created equal

With their previous quarter earnings behind them, $XPeng Inc.(XPEV)$ $NIO Inc.(NIO)$ $Li Auto(LI)$ $Rivian Automotive, Inc.(RIVN)$ and $Faraday Future Intelligent Electric Inc.(FFIE)$ may now focus on executing their strategic and tactical plans to advance their businesses. With tightening emission controls and rising awareness of global warming, the long-term prospects of EV makers appear to be promising, though not all EV startups are created equal.

Among these startups manufacturing electric vehicles, I prefer the Chinese trio to their western peers, given that their domestic market in China has seen the largest increase in the number of electric vehicles on the roads in recent years. Even with global economic slowdown, China is expected to remain the largest EV market globally, lending homeground advantage to Xpeng, Nio and Li Auto with their better knowledge of local requirements. Their abilities to seal win-win partnerships with automotive incumbents are testimonial of their business agility in the face of economic challenges and uncertainties.

Across the pacific ocean, Faraday Future has been struggling to stay afloat under financial distress. Its market capitalization of mere $9 million reflects the market pessimism over the EV maker's ability to remain a going concern, despite its management's promise to return to profitability and protect shareholders' interests. In fact, with such a meagre, bankruptcy risks are elevated for the EV maker, especially if it is unable to execute a turnaround in its sales and deliveries.

On the other hand, Amazon has a stake in Rivian whom the e-commerce giant has partnered to electrify its delivery fleet and target to have at least 100,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian to join its fleet on the road by 2030. With the backing from its strategic shareholder Amazon, Rivian appears to be a better bet than Faraday Future.
