GOOG leads in AI race, not MSFT !
Verdict is still out.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is still in its nascent stage.
Yet the media or ??? has made it as if ChatGPT is {by default} the leader of the pack.
Here is the good news. It is not, far from it.
Just as I have suspected and mentioned it in my post’s viewpoint (click here ! to read), $Alphabet(GOOG)$ is still the real deal actually.
Further down the road, it may be relegated to 2nd place.
"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it."
It ain't over till the fat lady sings.
To determine the better AI engine, Tom’s Guide writer Ryan Morrison has decided to put the 2 front runners through a series of tests. (see below)
This is not the first time, Morrison is pitting ChatGPT against Gemini.
The last time a similar spar was carried out, it was on 12 Dec 2023. (see below)
12 Dec 2023’s test - scope.
For the initial battle, it was divided into 2 categories.
The “kick” for this experiment was to get Anthropic’s Claude (another chatbot) to design the questions? Smart move, don’t you think?
(1) Generalization.
Math problem. tie.
Ambiguous writing. bard.
Tricky general knowledge question.
The coding problem. bard.
Contradictory information. chatgpt.
The trolley problem. no winner.
A sense of humour. bard.
(2) Deep analysis.
Finding nuance in debate. chatgpt.
Finding the false premise. bard.
Another try at coding. bard.
Nothing but the facts. bard.
Winner - Bard, winning on 6 of 11 challenges. ChatGPT had victories on 3 of 11 challenges.
The “very interesting” caveat to this test was Bard’s win rate increased when Anthropic’s Claude was involved in the analysis.
3 months later.
Much progress has been made since mid December 2023 when the first series of tests were carried out.
For starters, Bard has given way to Gemini.
Chatbots overall, have become a central feature of the generative AI landscape, including acting as a:
Search engine.
Fountain of knowledge.
Creative aid and artist in residence.
Both ChatGT and Google Gemini have the ability to create images and have plugins to other services.
Scope of test.
For the 2nd round test, Morrison compared free version of ChatGPT (GPT-3.5) to free version of Google Gemini (Pro 1.0).
Test did not look at any image generation capability as its outside the scope of the free versions of the models.
For objectivity, the tests have excluded functionality not shared / common between the 2 chatbots.
Second round test - scope.
Coding proficiency. gemini.
Natural language understanding (NLU). chatgpt.
Creative text. gemini.
Reasoning and Problem solving. chatgpt.
Explain like I’m 5 yo. gemini.
Ethical reasoning & Decision making. gemini.
Translation. gemini.
Knowledge retrieval, Application & Learning. tie.
Conversational fluency, Error handling & Recovery. chatgpt.
Winner - Gemini, winning on 6 of 9 challenges. ChatGPT had victories on 4 of 9 challenges.
This time round, Morrison was the judge of the results output by both chatbot, unlike mid-December’s test.
I am not gloating. It is only “fair” to have expectations that Google would come up tops.
Afterall, it has been in the line of “AI” businesses for the longest time, without any competitor/s able to mount a credible challenge.
Not until November 2022 when ChatGPT was first introduced to the world, knocking Google off its throne.
To be objective, ChatGPT’s image generator is far superior to Google’s.
With the latest “woke” fiasco, Google still have a lot of work cut out for its AI-image generator. (see below)
Google’s founder Sergey Brin who came out of retirement to get involved with its AI-chatbot Bard > Gemini, admitted that insufficient tests lead to the IT-debacle.
Google needs to slow down a trickle, have its products thoroughly tested before releasing it to the public.
Even just a mere few days would prevent reputation-damage and many other harms from occurring.
A fiasco that a tech giant like Google could ill afford.
Even Microsoft says so
In a bid to defend itself from EU scrutiny on Generative AI, $Microsoft(MSFT)$ CEO concedes that Google has an advantage in AI, due to the infrastructure and the full vertical integration across its platform, especially YouTube with Google.
Yet all these whiles, Microsoft has made itself out to be the leader fo the AI pack. Ha ha ha.
Google stock price has trended down since mid February 2024, when early warnings first appeared.
It escalated to a “full blown” outcry a few weeks ago, leading to Google’s taking the image generator offline.
The incident has severely dented Google’s stock price.
It bottomed at $132.56 per share on 06 Mar 2024. (see above)
Since then, it has staged a limited recover.
On Wed, 13 Mar 2024 when US market closed for the week, Google was at $140.77, followed by a mild pull back and then it began trending upwards again.
In contrast, $Microsoft(MSFT)$ (Google’s direct AI competitor) stock price has been racking up during past month. It trended downwards when attention returned to Google.
Technical analysis (TA).
Looking at Google’s moving average (see above), its price index is sitting above its 20-day, 50-day and 200-day moving averages (ma).
Clearly indicating an upside to Google’s stock price is attainable.
With an RSI reading of “61”, Google is neither overbought nor underbought.
In summary - Gemini is a better AI-chatbot than ChatGPT.
