Gold & GOOG - US Recession Beaters !
.
Billionaire hedge fund manager John Paulson has poured capital into one of the strongest sectors of the market.
Paulson, who runs Paulson & Co., just bought $33.72 million worth of $International Tower Hill Mines(THM)$, boosting his firm’s stake by over 6 million shares in Q1 2025.
SEC filings show the move has brought his total ownership to more than 70 million shares, with Paulson & Co. grabbing a 37% slice of the gold mining company.
Paulson has also added a new $23.73 million position in $Alphabet(GOOG)$, Google’s parent company in a pivot to technology, with the buy of 126,000 shares signaling confidence in big tech’s resilience.
Paulson’s gold play aligns with surging prices, with the precious metal soaring past $3,000 an ounce amid economic uncertainty and trade tensions. (see below)
The THM stake underscores Paulson’s long-standing bet on miners, with the stock climbing 40% in the past month.
Paulson’s portfolio is historically heavy in gold miners.
Known for his 2007 subprime windfall, his latest moves highlight his drive to spot value in turbulent times, balancing safe havens with growth assets.
My viewpoints: (mine only)
(1) Alphabet.
Alphabet is one stock that I intend to hold as a long-term investment (for now).
It is truly one of few tech stocks that is at the forefront of technology be it (a) artificial intelligence, (b) autonomous driving (via Waymo) or (c) quantum computing (via its “Willow” qubit chip.
Will it get its feet wet on robotics ? Investors will have to stay tuned.
With (a) a US market that has turned toxic & volatile (thanks to Trump’s haphazard policies) and (b) an economy that is poised for a recession, finding the right (i) entry price and (ii) stop loss price, becomes all the more crucial.
Below are some Wall Street views.
(1) TradingView Analysis:
-
Recommended entry price: $171.80 (as of 05 Mar 2025).
-
Stop-loss: $165.
-
Take-profit targets: $190 (short-term resistance), $207 (previous high), and $220+ (long-term target).
(2) MarketBeat Insights:
-
Analysts view the recent pullback in Alphabet's stock as a buying opportunity.
-
Price targets ranging from $220 to $225, indicating significant upside potential from current levels.
(3) General Analyst Consensus:
-
The average price target is $210.62, with a high target of $250,
-
This reflects optimism about its long-term growth prospects.
Of the 3 recommendations, I think TradingView’s analysis is closer to Alphabet’s latest stock price.
Will defer to that as the possible “buy-in” yardstick etc…
Like John, I believe in having a small part of my holdings divested in gold too.
And so, I invested in $B2Gold(BTG)$ a while back, in January 2021. (see above)
Perhaps it’s because I bought them during its peak, it is still in the “red” after 4 years.
It has risen by +22.81% based on past month performance, that is good news. (see above)
Hopefully, 2025 will be the year I could finally divest it with a modest profit.
Lesson learnt is “buying a listed company ‘cheap’ is so important, despite its growth prospect”. Trading volume needs to be healthy too.
Otherwise, it might be a long wait before it next peak again.
As for THM, it is a penny stock that has been trading below $1.00 since 14 Apr 2022.
There have been no record of SEC requiring THM to undergo a reverse stock split to keep the stock price above the $1.00 mark.
Is this a “good” omen ? Or does this leave the door wide opened for reverse stock split to take place.
I am not a fan of reverse stock split.
Mathematically, I understand that “value” remains intact after the split exercise.
However, psychological damage has been done, with traders fleeing the stock, usually the moment news broke of reverse stock split.
Are you sufficiently game to give THM a go, while staying tiptoe, always ready to flee in seconds’ notice ?
