All Eyes on Optics and Neoclouds. But Who Led the Flow?

Yesterday's session looked like a conviction rally on the surface. $NEBIUS(NBIS)$   finished up 34%. $CoreWeave, Inc.(CRWV)$   gained 19%. $SUPER MICRO COMPUTER INC(SMCI)$   added 19%. But flip to the trading data and the picture shifts.

The stock with the highest buy/sell ratio on our platform yesterday — 4.95 — was  $Apple(AAPL)$  . On a day it barely moved. We believe that's not rotation. That's a crowd with more than one idea at once.

Short Memory, Long Optical?

AI data centers are warehouses full of GPUs talking to each other at enormous speed — too fast for copper, which is why the industry is shifting to optical fiber.

Nvidia's Jensen Huang put it simply at Computex this spring: "Optics where you must."

The market is pricing that in. Since August began, optical stocks have outperformed memory names by more than 20 percentage points.

$Coherent (COHR.US)$ has gained 73% over seven consecutive sessions. $Lumentum (LITE.US)$ is up 43%. $Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI.US)$ kicked it off with a post-earnings gap that re-priced expectations for the whole space.

But not everyone is buying the rotation narrative.

UBS estimates hyperscaler capex growth slows from 76% this year to just 25% in 2027 and 6% in 2028. Optical names like Coherent and Lumentum derive most of their AI revenue from a handful of the same customers driving that capex.

When that spending deceleration hits, companies with narrow customer bases and stretched valuations tend to feel it first.

The Cloud You Haven't Heard Of

A neocloud company does one thing: it acquires the most advanced AI chips available and rents out that compute capacity to companies that need it now.

When $Alphabet-C (GOOG.US)$ reported last month, management disclosed it would rely on third-party compute providers as a bridging strategy while its own data center capacity comes online.

The world's largest search company admitting it can't keep up with its own AI demand was the clearest possible validation of the neocloud thesis — and stocks moved immediately on the headline.

The short squeeze that ran through both names last week amplified the move. Hazeltree data from over 700 fund clients showed $CoreWeave (CRWV.US)$ and $NEBIUS (NBIS.US)$ among the most-shorted names in the market through all of July — Nebius had roughly 24% of its float sold short heading into earnings.

Strong results plus forced covering is a specific kind of rocket fuel. But the underlying story — hyperscalers publicly admitting they need outside compute, neoclouds delivering earnings to match — is what the rally is actually about.

From Wall Street: "Panic"? What Panic?

The VIX closed at 14 last night. That's essentially the 2026 low.

Goldman Sachs's Ece Kepekci put it plainly: "The market has moved from heightened anxiety to almost no panic. I think summer vibes and beach mode is the current theme."

I chased SMCI on the breakout too, but AAPL printing a 4.95 buy sell ratio on a flat day feels like risk hedging, not clean AI rotation. Anyone else watching volume diverge here?

VIX at a 2026 low is exactly when people stop seeing risk lol. AAPL buy/sell near 5x and barely moving feels more like crowding than clean AI conviction
