Why NAPCO’s 28% Intraday Reversal Overwhelmed an Excellent Quarter

$NAPCO Security(NSSC)$ delivered record quarterly revenue, rapidly growing recurring revenue and a large earnings beat. Its stock opened sharply higher and briefly reached a record price, then collapsed below the prior close. That reversal suggests investors questioned how much of the margin improvement was sustainable once tariff refunds are removed.

NAPCO reported on August 24 for its fiscal fourth quarter ended June 30. Revenue increased 10% to a record $55.8 million, recurring-service revenue rose 12.9% to $25.3 million and equipment revenue increased 7.7% to $30.5 million. Net income advanced 52.7% to $17.8 million, or $0.50 per share, while adjusted EBITDA increased 44.3% to $20.6 million. NAPCO’s official results provide the figures.

The bullish thesis is the recurring-services mix. Alarm-monitoring and communications revenue represented approximately 45% of quarterly revenue and carried a gross margin above 90%. July’s recurring run rate was approximately $103 million annually. This revenue is more predictable and considerably more profitable than selling equipment alone, while fire communicators, electronic locks, access control and school-security products provide several paths for equipment growth.

NAPCO ended June with approximately $127 million of cash, generated $59.2 million of annual free cash flow and increased its quarterly dividend 13.3% to $0.17. Equipment revenue rebounded, including 36% fourth-quarter growth in intrusion products driven primarily by StarLink fire communicators.

The bearish issue is earnings quality at the margin. Quarterly gross margin expanded to 61.3% from 52.8%, but about 600 basis points of that improvement came from tariff refunds. EPS included approximately $0.09 from net refunds. Removing the benefit still leaves a strong quarter, but extrapolating the reported 61.3% margin would be aggressive.

Full-year GAAP net income also declined slightly because of a $16 million litigation settlement, demonstrating that legal risk is not theoretical. NAPCO is a comparatively small company with customer, product and channel concentration, and equipment orders can be lumpy even when recurring revenue is stable.

NSSC opened around $46.50, surged to $51.75 and then collapsed to $37.59 after reaching $36.61. Volume of approximately 2.34 million shares was several times normal. The roughly 28% fall from high to close is a severe bearish reversal. Immediate support is $36–$37, followed by $31–$32; the abandoned $46–$52 region becomes major resistance, with an intermediate barrier near $40–$42.

Selling puts directly after a failed breakout of this size risks catching continuing institutional distribution. If NSSC remains below $42 and rebounds into that resistance, a 30–45-day $45/$50 bear call spread could place the short strike above the failed recovery area. The live short call should be near 0.10–0.20 delta with workable liquidity; otherwise no trade is preferable. A close above $46 on strong volume invalidates the bearish setup. Maximum loss equals the $5 width minus credit.

The operating evidence leans bullish, but the stock outlook is moderately bearish until the reversal is repaired. Recurring revenue and cash flow are excellent; the market’s rejection indicates that refund-adjusted margins and expectations matter more immediately. The bearish stock view would be invalidated by the shares reclaiming $46 alongside continued double-digit recurring growth and evidence that gross margin remains strong without refunds.
