【Livestream Clip 2|Matt Gamblin: Zero's Lesson: More AI Features Can Lose Customers】

【LIVESTREAM RECAP|How AI Is Reshaping Finance and Business: What Investors Need to Know】

Hi Tigers! In this session we dug into how AI is reshaping finance and business — a topic that's become impossible to ignore in boardrooms. From the long arc of technological change (PCs, ERPs, Y2K, business intelligence, and now AI and agents), to why data quality decides whether AI actually works, to how investors can separate real AI-driven value from the hype — the flow was clear and layered. Matt also grounded it all in real case studies including Zero, Oracle, and CBA.

【ABOUT THE GUEST】

Our speaker, Matt Gamblin, is a chartered accountant, finance executive, and founder of The Company Coach. He brings more than 15 years of experience across CFO leadership and finance transformation, including supporting the roughly AUD 89 million strategic sale of Australian tech company Flight Board, plus senior finance roles at Diageo, Red Bull, and ASOS. What makes his perspective rare: he hasn't just studied this shift from the outside — he's been in the driver's seat of major finance transformations, and now focuses on building an AI-native finance function.

【HIGHLIGHTS】

1. Historical lens: placing AI alongside PCs, ERPs, Y2K, and BI to tell real change from doom-and-gloom.

2. Data is the make-or-break: why stronger AI can make bad data even more dangerous.

3. Case studies: the real lessons from Zero and Oracle, and how to tell if management truly understands AI or is just issuing press releases.

【THIS CLIP】Zero's lesson: more AI features can actually lose customers. Matt breaks down the New Zealand-born, Australia-popular finance software — by wiring in OpenAI and Anthropic and stacking features into its accounting platform, it sent a signal that accountants and the market read as "trying to replace accountants," putting a whole profession on the defensive. Why it's worth watching: having looked inside Zero's automations himself, he found many — like "your marketing spend is high this month" — add little value any owner could spot from the numbers. The takeaway for investors: more AI features doesn't equal more value, and the wrong direction can hurt customer relationships.

We genuinely recommend watching the full replay — some of the most valuable takeaways are tucked into the case details and Q&A that many people skip. Let's keep making sense of this shift together in the community.

More AI features do not equal more business value.

When accounting platform Xero hastily wired in LLMs to stack automated features, it backfired. Superficial alerts offered little real utility, while signaling an attempt to replace accountants—putting key users on the defensive.

For investors, this offers a sharp framework:

True Utility: Real AI cuts costs, saves time, or boosts margins.

User Alignment: Features should empower professionals, not threaten their role.

Data Integrity: AI only accelerates errors when built on messy data.

Feature stuffing risks customer churn. Sustainable earnings matter far more than buzzword-heavy press releases.

    For my simple view.
I agree with the main lesson: More AI does NOT automatically mean more value.
The Xero example is important for investors. A company can add many AI features, but if customers feel that AI is replacing them instead of helping them, it can actually hurt the business.
For me, there are 3 things to check:
Does AI save customers money or time?
If yes, AI creates real value.
Does AI increase revenue or profit?
More AI features are meaningless if they don't improve financial results.
Do customers actually use and pay for the AI?
This is more important than management saying “we are an AI company.”
    Investment lesson
I would not buy a stock simply because it uses OpenAI, Anthropic, or AI.
    I prefer companies where AI:
    increases revenue
    improves profit margins
    reduces costs
    strengthens customer loyalty
    My rating of this lesson:
    Bottom line:
AI is a powerful tool, but AI features ≠ business value. For investors, real earnings and cash flow matter more than AI headlines.
