10/23 Strategy Preview | AI Funding Alarm

What Happened Today

① AI infrastructure is shifting from chasing growth to chasing financing ability. META fell 7%, AMZN fell 4.5%. The market is starting to worry that AI infrastructure spending is huge, financing costs are rising, and payback periods are getting longer. OpenAI's funding valuation was reportedly cut, putting AI capital needs in the spotlight.

② Selling pressure on semis got worse. LRCX fell 12%, and most semiconductor stocks fell over 5%. Even though WDC's results and guidance beat expectations, it was still dragged down by supply expansion and capex worries. Money is no longer just looking at growth — it's checking returns on investment.

③ Money is starting to split. SPOT rose 11% on good earnings. Some software stocks rose on short covering, but that doesn't mean tech has fully reversed. Treasury yields fell to about 4.95%, while WTI crude rose to $99.47, so geopolitical risk is still there.

What Money Is Betting On / Protecting Against

Buyers: Demand for hedging is rising in the broad market and semis, and Puts are the main tool.

[Buyer] SPY | 2026/12/31 730 Put$SPY 20261231 730.0 PUT$
10,000 contracts | about $10.25M traded | underlying at $762.66
A big long-dated Put, possibly to guard against a market pullback before year-end, or as insurance for existing long positions.

[Buyer] QQQ | 2026/10/27 680 Put$QQQ 20261027 680.0 PUT$
10,000 contracts | about $1.96M traded | underlying at $705.09
A short-dated index Put, reflecting protection against near-term Nasdaq downside. With expiry close, time decay is fast.

[Buyer] SOXL | 2029/01/19 55 Put$SOXL 20290119 55.0 PUT$
4,000 contracts | about $10.48M traded | underlying at $87.17
A long-dated Put, possibly to guard against a big drop in the leveraged semiconductor ETF.

[Buyer] SOXL | 2026/10/23 80 Put$SOXL 20261023 80.0 PUT$
30,000 contracts | trade amount not provided | underlying about $82
Only one day to expiry — an ultra-short-term downside bet or hedge. If the stock doesn't fall fast, time value can disappear quickly.

[Buyer] KRE | 2026/11/20 65 Put$KRE 20261120 65.0 PUT$
30,000 contracts | about $1.02M traded | underlying at $72.21
A big Put order on the regional bank ETF, possibly to guard against a bank stock pullback or related risk events.

[Buyer] JNJ | 2026/10/30 260 Put$JNJ 20261030 260.0 PUT$
7,036 contracts | about $914.7K traded | underlying at $268.86
Put buying is showing up in defensive healthcare too, meaning hedging demand isn't only in tech.

[Buyer] SPCX | 2026/11/20 135 Put$SPCX 20261120 135.0 PUT$
17,000 contracts | trade amount not provided | underlying at $144.75
Money is betting on downside or protecting a position.

[Buyer] DRAM | 2027/04/16 60 Call$DRAM 20270416 60.0 CALL$
27,000 contracts | about $9.18M traded | underlying at $45.96
The long-dated Call shows some money still betting on medium- to long-term upside in memory-related assets, which conflicts with recent semiconductor hedging trades.

Sellers: Some money is betting leveraged ETFs won't break key levels, or that upside is limited.

[Seller] TQQQ | 2026/11/13 50 Put$TQQQ 20261113 50.0 PUT$
About 4,401 contracts total | about $365.3K traded | underlying at $67.57
Selling Puts to collect premium, possibly thinking the risk of TQQQ breaking 50 is limited. But if the stock crashes, sellers can still face big losses.

[Seller] SOXL | 2026/11/20 120 Call$SOXL 20261120 120.0 CALL$
29,000 contracts | trade amount not provided | underlying about $82
Selling Calls may reflect a view that upside is limited, or be a yield-enhancement strategy on an existing position. If SOXL rallies hard, naked Call selling can be very risky.

What to Watch for Related Assets

SPY: The 730 Put is a long-dated defense signal, not proof the market must fall to 730. Watch whether the market can stop falling and whether index Put hedging demand continues.

QQQ: The 680 Put is about 3.6% below the current price and expires 10/27, so short-term swings and time decay both matter. If the Nasdaq bounces fast, these options can lose value quickly.

SOXL: The 80 Put, the 2029 55 Put, and the 120 Call showing up together suggest layered hedging and split views. SOXL is a leveraged ETF, so swings can be bigger. Don't treat one big order as the direction answer.

DRAM: The 2027 60 Call is a medium- to long-term bullish signal. Watch whether memory demand, prices, and supply changes support the expectation.

META / AMZN: Watch AI capex, financing arrangements, and cash flow outlook. If funding worries spread, cloud and AI infrastructure stocks could stay under pressure.

LRCX / WDC: Focus on semiconductor equipment demand, memory supply expansion, and capex guidance. Beating expectations may not offset market worries about future supply and demand.

What to Watch Before the Open Today

SPY / QQQ: Whether Put hedging demand continues, and whether the market can stop falling.

SOXL / Semis: Whether short-dated Puts add more volatility, and whether the sector stays weaker than the broad market.

META / AMZN: Whether AI funding and capex worries spread to other cloud and infrastructure companies.

WDC / LRCX: Whether supply, costs, and equipment demand keep outweighing good earnings.

Rates / Oil: Whether falling Treasury yields plus oil near $100 further affects growth stock valuations and market risk appetite.

One-line read: Tech is shifting from the "AI growth story" to "where does the money come from, and when does the return arrive." Index and semiconductor Puts show hedging demand is rising, but one big options order doesn't represent the whole market's direction. Before the open, first confirm price action, whether the trading continues, and whether funding risk spreads further.

Funding panic feels overdone. LRCX down 12% looks more like forced de-risking than some sudden capex ROI collapse, and semis usually bottom before that narrative dies
