Alphabet Earnings Preview: Projected 90%+ Cloud Growth vs Cash Flow Headwinds — Which Narrative Will Prevail?

$Alphabet(GOOGL)$   $Alphabet(GOOG)$   is scheduled to release its financial results post-market on October 28th ET. In the third quarter, Alphabet continued to see personnel shifts within its AI division. Demis Hassabis stepped down from his role overseeing the day-to-day operations of Google DeepMind, with Koray Kavukcuoglu taking over the leadership of Gemini research and development and team operations. Hassabis has transitioned to the roles of Chair of DeepMind and Chief Scientist at Alphabet.

Core Financial Indicators

– Alphabet's revenue is expected to be $127.85B for 2026 Q3, up 24.9% YOY;

– Net income is estimated to be $37.33B, up 6.73% YOY. Since market expectations often overlook the investment gains Google has realized from companies like Anthropic, this net profit forecast tends to be rather conservative.

Three Things to Watch

Google Services: AI-Powered Search & Ad Growth

Alphabet's ad business can be benchmarked against Meta. Meta, which was the first to report its Q3 2026 results, has already shown that ad price growth is accelerating further while ad impressions have slowed. Meta's overall ad revenue growth remained flat year-over-year compared to Q2.

Google continues to promote its AI-powered search advertising tools, rolling out new performance analysis features in September that provide advertisers with greater insight into the relationships between search terms, ad creatives, and landing pages. The core objective is to improve ad matching and conversion efficiency, thereby boosting both advertiser ROI and Google's own monetization potential. Furthermore, Google is testing the integration of advertisements directly into responses generated by its AI-powered search mode—encompassing areas such as shopping recommendations and other commercial use cases.

Google Cloud Momentum

In Q2, Cloud revenue surged 82% year over year to $24.8 billion, supported by strong demand for AI infrastructure, enterprise AI solutions and core cloud services. Alphabet also reported a substantial expansion in its cloud backlog.

Bloomberg consensus projects Q3 Google Cloud revenue of approximately $29.0 billion, representing 91.3% year-over-year growth and 17.0% sequential growth.

During the previous earnings call, management said it planned to expand its use of third-party computing capacity in Q3 to bridge the gap while internal capacity is built out. The strategy allows Alphabet to serve more customers and capture demand sooner. Management also expects the majority of revenue from existing TPU system sales agreements to be recognized in 2027, suggesting that some of the financial benefits from its custom-chip strategy will take time to materialize.

Meanwhile, Google Cloud continues to broaden its enterprise AI offering. On October 21, Google Cloud announced that OpenAI's frontier models and Codex agentic workflows would be made available through Model Garden, adding further choice for enterprise customers within Google's infrastructure and governance environment.

CapEx

Alphabet's CapEx will affect the revenue expectations of the entire chip sector. Google's spending on AI data centers will also have an instructive effect on other cloud companies.

For Q3, the market expects CapEx to reach $55.8 billion—a substantial 132.7% year-over-year increase.

As these capital expenditures have pushed free cash flow from positive to negative, Alphabet has halted share buybacks for two consecutive quarters. Investors should be aware that CapEx significantly exceeding expectations could once again trigger market concerns.

Option Market Signals

Alphabet's put/call ratio is 0.69, which is at a relatively low level for the year so far. The shares currently have an implied volatility (IV) of 42.05%, which is at the 94 percentile historically.

Summary of Risks and Opportunities

– Potential Positive Catalysts: Google Cloud's margin improvement

– Risks to Monitor: The risk of excessive CapEx; Gemini's slow commercialization

– Valuation: Alphabet's current PE (Price-to-Earnings) ratio is 16.27 times, which is at the 0th percentile of its historical range over the past five years.
