10/30 Strategy Preview | Tech Stock Confidence Cracking
① What Happened Today
Tech earnings blew up across the board. The market is shifting from chasing AI growth to questioning whether high valuations can actually deliver.
Based on premarket data, QQQ is down about 2.5%, and the S&P 500 is down about 1%. Tech is the hardest hit:
INTC -25%: PC demand worsened, and Q4 guidance came in far below expectations, dragging down AMD, DELL, and HPQ.
AMZN -7%: AWS grew 39%, but missed big institutions' ~43% target, raising questions about AI investment returns.
SNDK -8%: Revenue wasn't bad, but gross margin and future pricing power missed market expectations.
RDDT -20%, RBLX -17%, TWLO -19%: Results or growth guidance disappointed, and the market's tolerance for growth stocks is falling.
Also, an oil tanker attack in the Middle East and Houthi-related news pushed oil up about 2%. Combined with US midterm election uncertainty, that further hurt risk appetite.
Earnings Focus 1: INTC | PC Business Drags Down Recovery
Intel's biggest problem isn't Q3 results. It's that the next six months may be worse than the market expects.
Q3 revenue was $16.51B, roughly in line with Wall Street. But Q4 revenue guidance is only $15–16B, about 9% below consensus at the midpoint, and gross margin guidance dropped to 38%.
Three main pressures:
PC demand freezing: Client business is expected to fall over 20% quarter over quarter in Q4. PC makers are cutting inventory due to memory costs and weak demand, and the adjustment may last into the first half of 2027.
Fab shutdown: An accident at the Israel facility is expected to hit Q4 revenue by about $300M and pressure gross margin.
Cash burn: 2027 capex will still rise, but management expects free cash flow to struggle to turn positive.
Worth noting: Data center and AI revenue grew 78% year over year, which is actually quite strong. But server capacity is limited and can't fully offset the PC decline short term.
Trading watch: The market is rethinking Intel's recovery timeline. The key isn't how big the drop is — it's whether the stock can stop falling after earnings, and whether AMD, DELL, and HPQ keep getting dragged by weak PC demand.
Earnings Focus 2: AMZN | AI Growth Isn't Fast Enough
Amazon's problem isn't that AWS isn't growing. It's that growth can't keep up with investors' high expectations, while spending is speeding up.
AWS Q3 revenue was $46B, up 39.3% year over year, beating Wall Street but below big institutions' ~43% target.
The market is mainly worried about three things:
Growth momentum missing expectations: AWS net new revenue fell from $4.6B to $3.75B quarter over quarter. Management expects over 40% growth in 2027 and 2028, but that's below some buyers' original 45%–50%+ hopes.
AI investment is expensive: Q3 cash capex hit $75.9B, free cash flow was negative $33.5B, and 2027 capex will rise significantly.
Profit recovery in doubt: AI cloud margins are lower than traditional AWS, and ad revenue growth slowed from 26.2% last quarter to 10.9%.
Still, AWS has $578B in backlog, and group operating margin hit a record 13.9%. Long-term demand hasn't disappeared.
Trading watch: After earnings, the market will focus more on when AI investment turns into cash flow. If the stock bounces but can't fill the earnings gap, valuation pressure is still there. If the decline narrows, watch whether buyers start to recognize AWS's long-term growth again.
② What Money Is Betting On / Protecting Against
Buyers: All four big orders were Put buys, totaling about $51.38M. Money is clearly adding downside protection for the market.
[Buyer] QQQ | 2027/01/15 650 Put$QQQ 20270115 650.0 PUT$
35,000 contracts | $32.06M traded | underlying at $715.42
Big out-of-the-money Put buying, possibly medium-term protection against more tech downside, or a directional bearish trade.
[Buyer] QQQ | 2026/12/31 695 Put$QQQ 20261231 695.0 PUT$
8,000 contracts | $13.816M traded | underlying at $712.96
Betting on or guarding against more Nasdaq downside before year-end. 695 is close to the trade-time price, so it's more sensitive to short-term drops.
[Buyer] SPY | 2026/11/20 768 Put$SPY 20261120 768.0 PUT$
4,585 contracts | $4.264M traded | underlying at $768.37
Near-the-money Put buying, possibly reflecting demand to guard against market swings over the next three weeks.
[Buyer] IWM | 2026/12/18 263 Put$IWM 20261218 263.0 PUT$
6,000 contracts | $1.242M traded | underlying at $284.77
Out-of-the-money Put buying, possibly guarding against a deeper small-cap pullback if risk appetite falls.
Sellers: The source data doesn't show big active sell-to-open orders, so we can't say institutions are heavily selling Puts to collect premium. The counterparties may include market makers, but their actual positions and hedging direction need more data to confirm.
③ What to Watch for Related Tickers
QQQ | Can the tech selloff narrow?
Earnings disappointed broadly, and tech valuations are under pressure. Big orders are concentrated in 695 and 650 Puts, reflecting demand for downside protection through year-end. Short term, first watch whether it stabilizes near $710–715, then watch the $695 area. These strikes are where money is focused — not guaranteed support.
SPY | Battle around $768
The 768 Put is near the money and sensitive to stock price and implied volatility changes. If the market keeps weakening, the contract can quickly gain value. If the stock bounces and volatility falls, Put buyers can lose from both time decay and falling volatility.
IWM | Small-cap defense heating up
The 263 Put is about 7.6% below the trade-time price, showing money is watching deeper downside risk. Watch whether IWM holds near $280, and whether selling pressure spreads from tech to small caps.
④ What to Watch Before the Open Today
INTC / AMD / DELL / HPQ: Whether the PC demand cut keeps dragging semis and PC hardware stocks.
AMZN / QQQ: Whether AWS growth and AI capex worries trigger more valuation adjustment in big tech.
SPY / IWM: Whether selling spreads from tech to the whole market, and whether a bounce gets buyer support.
Energy sector / Oil: Whether Middle East risk keeps pushing oil higher and adds to inflation worries.
One-Line Read
Tech earnings aren't just disappointing results — they're a repricing of high-growth expectations. QQQ, SPY, and IWM all saw big Put buying at the same time, showing money is adding defense. Today isn't about rushing to buy the dip. It's about watching whether earnings selling narrows and whether the decline starts to spread.
