CoreWeave Hit a Record Low While the Dow Gained 3%: What Changed, What the Balance Sheet Says, and Why My Sell-Put Gates Are All Red (With the Strike Math Anyway)

Written Thursday 5 Nov, SGT, using Wednesday's US close.

WHAT HAPPENED

On Wednesday the Dow gained 1,569 points (+3.03%) to 53,356 and the VIX fell 20% to 16.61. CoreWeave fell 9.90% to $48.42, a new record-low close and about 65% below its 52-week high of $138.36. It's down about 46% in a month.

It wasn't only CoreWeave. The whole neocloud group fell:

- Nebius: -6.67%

- IREN: -11.24%

- Roundhill Neocloud ETF: -9.10%

- Nvidia: -3.17% to $200.13

Three things hit at once.

1. Texas politics.

Democrat Gina Hinojosa won the Texas governor's race (the AP has called it) after campaigning on tougher limits for new data centers, including an immediate moratorium. Wells Fargo estimates Texas holds about 27% of planned US data center gigawatts, far more than any other state. Wells Fargo's Ohsung Kwon had warned that a Democratic win in Texas could be a "left-tail event" for the AI trade. CoreWeave uses data center partners that include Texas facilities. The bond market reacted the same day: CoreWeave bonds hit new lows, and the five-year CDS widened to 1,139.7 basis points.

2. Analysts losing confidence.

Citi kept its Buy rating but cut its target from $159 to $128. Bernstein moved to Strong Sell on Oct 26. The consensus target is $129.41, more than double the price, but the stock is moving on credit, not on targets.

3. Customer spending timing.

Microsoft's capex for the September quarter came in at $45.2 billion against about $50.7 billion expected. CFO Amy Hood said "some third-party capacity deliveries we expected in Q1 were delayed." Microsoft didn't name suppliers, and a delay isn't a cancellation. But Microsoft is a major CoreWeave customer, and the market read it as a warning.

THE BALANCE SHEET UNDER THE PRICE

- Market cap: about $27.7 billion

- Enterprise value: about $78.7 billion. The difference is mostly debt.

- Revenue over the last 12 months: $7.59 billion

- Operating cash flow over the last 12 months: $6.91 billion. The business does generate cash.

- Free cash flow over the last 12 months: -$13.65 billion. Capex is far larger than operating cash.

- Debt to equity: 5.53. Current ratio: 0.46.

- Interest coverage: -0.72. Operating profit doesn't cover the interest bill.

- Beta: 7.41

Put simply: the stock market values CoreWeave at $27.7 billion, while the whole company, debt included, is valued at $78.7 billion. Equity holders get paid only after lenders. With CDS above 1,100bp, the bond market is pricing a meaningful chance that lenders don't get paid in full. That's why the stock falls even when the wider market rallies.

THE BULL CASE

- Demand is real. Backlog was $104 billion at the end of Q2, and revenue has more than doubled year over year.

- Q3 consensus is $3.54 billion of revenue, against $2.58 billion in Q2.

- Treasury Secretary Bessent said neoclouds are a small part of the market and AI infrastructure financing remains robust.

- At $48 the stock may already price in a lot of bad news. In August it jumped 25.6% after earnings.

THE NEXT TEST: TUESDAY, NOV 10

CoreWeave reports Q3 after the US close on Tuesday, Nov 10 (Wednesday morning SGT). Consensus is $3.54 billion in revenue and EPS of -$1.28. Options are pricing about a 13% move. In four of the last six reports, the actual move was bigger than the implied move: +25.6% last August, -33.9% in November 2025.

What I'll watch:

- Interest expense against the $860 to $940 million guidance

- Any new financing and what it costs

- 2027 capex plans and how they're funded

- Any comment on Texas sites and Microsoft deliveries

HOW I RUN IT THROUGH MY SELL-PUT GATES

1. The 200-day moving average: FAIL.

The stock is at $48.42 against a 200-day of $90.65, about 47% below. My hard gate. Nothing else matters until this changes.

2. The earnings calendar: BLOCKED.

The report is on Nov 10. Every 30 to 45 day expiry crosses it, and I don't hold earnings inside an expiry.

3. Credit: FAIL.

CDS at 1,139.7bp. When the bond market prices a company this way, selling a put means writing default insurance on its stock.

All three gates fail, so I won't sell a put.

THE STRIKE MATH ANYWAY, SO YOU CAN SEE THE TRAP

People keep asking what strike they should sell. Here's what my method gives, for illustration only.

- Expiry: Dec 18, 37 days after a post-earnings entry on Nov 11

- Spot: $48.42

- Volatility: 90% to 100% (assumed)

My two-anchor method:

- One standard deviation floor: 48.42 x IV x the square root of 37/365 = about $13.9 to $15.4 of expected move, so the floor lands around $33 to $35.

- The 50-day ($78) and 200-day ($90.65) are both far above the price, so there's no SMA anchor.

- The delta at the floor is only about 0.08 to 0.10, below my 0.15 minimum. My rule says to move up.

- A delta of 0.15 to 0.20 puts the strike around $37 to $40.

The model premium for a $38 put is about $1.30 to $1.70, or 3.5% to 4.5% in 37 days. On paper that looks like a great yield.

It isn't. That premium is the market charging you for the chance of another -33.9% earnings day, a Texas permitting shock, or a financing problem. The return looks rich because the risk is real. And if you're assigned at $38, you own a stock whose bonds are trading at distressed levels.

These premiums are Black-Scholes estimates, not quotes. The real numbers after Nov 10 will be different.

MY RE-ENTRY CHECKLIST (ALL THREE MUST BE TRUE)

1. CDS back below 1,000bp

2. The price reclaims and holds the 200-day moving average

3. The Nov 10 report is out with guidance intact, and the live chain passes my volatility gates: IV Rank of at least 40%, IV Percentile of at least 45%, IV at least 1.2 times historical volatility

Then: size capped at 2% (non-core), a 50% take-profit GTC, a stop at 2.5 times premium, one roll at most.

MY VERDICT

CoreWeave might be the best rebound trade of 2027, or the first real casualty of AI infrastructure debt. I don't know which. My rules don't need me to know. They only ask whether the structure, the calendar and the credit market support selling insurance on it. Today none of them do. I'd rather miss the bottom than sell insurance on a balance sheet the bond market is pricing as distressed.

Your turn: is $48 the point of maximum pessimism, or does Texas policy add a new risk that isn't priced in yet? And would you sell a put into Nov 10, or wait for the report?

This is my personal trading framework, shared for education. It is not investment advice. Options carry significant risk, including assignment and losses larger than the premium collected. Premiums are model estimates, not quotes. Always verify live chain data before trading.

Today $CoreWeave, Inc.(CRWV)$ just drops another 10+%. $NASDAQ 100(NDX)$ also collapsed. People are panicking and fleeing like there is no tomorrow. Will there be anyone trying to catch the falling knife now? Instead of black Friday, it is now black Thursday.
