The draw for Fintech's Firms may be a double edged sword
Fintech firms (you can see this on $Grab Holdings(GRAB)$, etc) are vying to offer Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services. This is good for us investors as it is increasingly becoming very popular as it is similar to credit cards and are often interest free.
Like short term loans, it allows the consumer to buy a product and pay it in multiple installments. This service is offered by many financial institutions and not only makes payment very convenient but allows the consumer to buy more at one go.
However, is the BNPL service, really a service? This is because this service is freely available to all and all, even those with poor financial standings, may use these services. It does not help that these services can easily be used who may not good financial management. If coupled with an unstable source of income, this may lead to great debt, especially for those who often spend beyond their means.
Thus, it is important to regulate BNPL with some measures and guidelines, such as credit checks. This however, to an investor, is an exclusionary measure and thereby reduces the number of users.
Aside from measures, it is more important that one personally has good financial management and planning, and not spend beyond one's means. Can you imagine owing lots of interest because you bought too much food and took too many Private Hire Rides?
Thus, while these stocks are good to own due to BNPL's popularity, these companies must also exercise some regulations before it gets out of hand.
