• U.S. stocks staged a late comeback on Monday, withtheS&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite hitting new lows fortheyear before closing up fortheday.TheNasdaq Composite rose 1.63% to 12,536.02, whiletheS&P 500 rose 0.57% to 4,155.38.TheDow Jones Industrial Average gained 84.29 points, or 0.26%, to close at 33,061.50.TheDow was down more than 500 points at its session lows.Thewild trading session came ontheheels of a rough April for stocks.TheDow and S&P 500 are coming offtheir worst month since March 2020, whenthepandemic took hold.TheNasdaq had its worst month since 2008.

• Tech was a particular weak point in April, butthegroup ledtherebound on Monday. Netflix and Facebook-parent Meta Platforms jumped about 4.8% and 5.3%, respectively. Microsoft and Google-parent Alphabet advanced more than 2% each.

• Apple and Amazon closed up less than 1% after spending much ofthesession in negative territory. Art Cashin of UBS said on CNBC’s “Squawk ontheStreet” thatthetrading of Apple and Amazon in particular could be abarometer ofthenext steps forthebroader market.Semiconductors and energy stocks were two areas of strength on Monday. Intel and Chevron rose 3.1% and 2%, respectively, to supporttheDow.
