Buy at the sound of cannons
Buy at the sound of cannons, sell at the sound of trumpets, as Nathan Meyer Rothschild, a renowned financier, had famously quoted during the Napoleonic Wars. If this advice still holds in this modern world, which stocks will be expected to do well if war were to unfortunately erupt between Russia and Ukraine?
While I remain hopeful that a diplomatic solution can be reached eventually, albeit probably at the eleventh hour, as Kremlin and the Western leaders race round the clock to seek convergence between their fundamental differences, we should also be prepared for the worst. Should we stay invested or is cash the king?
Personally, I would put my idle cash to work harder, as I feel that the best time to invest is inevitably during a crisis, as the recent pandemic has taught us. For now, there’s no harm to put together a watchlist, and here’s my shortlist:
$DBS GROUP HOLDINGS LTD(D05.SI)$
The list is of course by no means exhaustive, and would naturally extend to include their peers and competitors as well. One could easily deduce that I'm looking at banking, defense and commodity sectors.
However, having a watchlist is the simple part, while taking actions is easier said than done, because panic is bound to sink in as everyone around you rushes for the exit.
To be a contrarian is lonely and requires deep conviction. However, it may also be extremely rewarding at the end.
What are your watchlists?
