This was taken in Joo Chiat, the home of Peranakans, an extremely unique pre-war architecture filled with variety of vivid colours in each segment.
A very well preserved houses where the original artefacts and interior remain intact. Due to their history of acting as traders for the Chinese and colonial populations in Singapore, they were a fairly wealthy population and displayed this wealth using the facade of their homes.
As we celebrate Singapore's 57th National Day, I feel very grateful and proud to call Singapore home.
The Place where it all began is The National Gallery Of Singapore. It was previously City Hall and The Supreme Court. Built in 1932, it witnessed many important events that shaped our young nation. From the surrender of Singapore to the Japanese in 1942, to the swearing in ceremony of our first cabinet of ministers led by our much loved and respected Mr Lee Kuan Yew, The National Gallery is rich with our glorious past. It now houses the most extensive collections of Singaporean and Asian Treasures.
While we will never forget our first steps to independence, we will look to the future with much hope and optimism for a even better Singapore. "Merdeka Singapura!"
