What to Expect On Tesla's AI Day? Good for $TSLA?

At Tesla's AI Day event last year, staff dressed up as robots and performed a rudimentary dance to the audience.

A year later, if there is a dance session in AI Day, then the real robot "Optimus" should dance.

Event Detail: According to Tesla's official announcement, the Tesla 2022 AI Day will be held on September 30, 2022 EST (SGT October 1) in Palo Alto, California.

Highlights of AI Day:

The focus of this event is on the progress of the Tesla Robotics, FSD and Dojo projects.

From Musk's poster on Twitter, we can see that Tesla's humanoid robot "Optimus" will make its debut at the conference, which may become the biggest highlight of this year's AI Day.

Robot details such as feature demonstrations, prices and mass production plans and training methods will be released on this day.

In addition, the latest progress of Tesla's autonomous driving technology (FSD) and Dojo supercomputer may also be announced on the same day, which will bring more surprises for Tesla fans.

Musk again warmed up for AI Day on social media.

This event is meant for recruiting AI & robotics engineers, so will be highly technical

1. Optimus: human-like hands and work capabilities

Tesla Bot, also known as Optimus, was announced at the company's Artificial Intelligence (AI) Day event on August 19, 2021. CEO Elon Musk claimed during the event that Tesla would likely build a prototype by 2022.

Its humanoid design will allow it to adapt easier to human society.

Standing at 5 ft 8 in (173 cm) and weighing 125 lbs (57 kg), it will have a carrying capacity Standing at 5 ft 8 in (173 cm) and weighing 125 lbs (57 kg), it will have a carrying capacity of 45 lbs (20 kg) and can lift 150 lbs (68 kg) off the ground.

Details of Optimus; data from wevolver.com

How does Optimus operate like a Human being?

  1. The brain of Optimus will be based on Tesla's supercomputer system, Dojo, which has superb computing power.
  2. The visual perception system is mainly based on Tesla's FSD computer modules and solutions
  3. The face is equipped with eight "Autopilot cameras", with a monitoring distance of up to 250 meters.
  4. Movement is mainly based on the neck, hands, legs and torso equipped with 40 electromechanical actuators, including 12 electromechanical actuators in the hands, enabling the robot to reach a level close to human flexibility.

Musk has previously said that

the Tesla robot is initially positioned to replace people engaged in repetitive and boring, dangerous work. But the visionary goal is to make it serve thousands of households, such as cooking, mowing the lawn, taking care of the elderly, etc.
if the humanoid robot Optimus can be mass-produced in the next two years, it will cost less than a car - $25,000. Perhaps in less than a decade, people will be able to buy their parents a robot as a birthday present.

2. Dojo: The Super Brain

As the brain of "Optimus," Dojo has also received a lot of attention. It is widely expected that Musk will announce the latest progress of Dojo at this year's AI Day.

Dojo is Tesla's supercomputer system, which can use massive amounts of video data to complete the labeling and training under "unsupervised" condition.

Tesla designed the chip to "seamlessly connect without any glue to each other," and the automaker took advantage of that by connecting 500,000 nodes together.

It adds the interface, power, and thermal management, and it results in what it calls a training tile:

The result is a 9 PFlops training tile with 36TB per second of bandwight in a less than 1 cubic foot format.

With its superior computing power, the Dojo supercomputer is able to process huge fleets of data at high speed for Tesla to train fully autonomous driving capabilities.

It should be noted that Dojo is focused on "pure machine learning" and is designed to support the next generation of AI-based technologies, which means it is not compatible with existing products on the market.

3. FSD

What is FSD?

Tesla's FSD system is a fully automated driving system that includes self-driving navigation, automatic lane change, automatic parking, summoning and traffic light and stop sign control.

In May, Musk said at the All-in Summit that

he plans to achieve one million FSD Beta test vehicles by 2022. According to official data, there are currently about 100,000 vehicles participating in the test.

In August, at the ONS Energy Conference in Norway, Musk said

he plans to have the FSD system ready in the U.S. by Christmas and hopes to start selling Tesla cars with fully self-driving technology by the end of this year.

Therefore, many people expect that Musk would officially announce FSD on AI Day.

However, as Musk expands FSD testing, the safety of the system is being questioned by outsiders. The NHTSA began investigating accidents involving the FSD system last year because of the many crashes that have occurred in vehicles equipped with the system.

In addition, it is worth mentioning that although FSD is called "fully automated driving system", but it can only achieve L2 level of autonomous driving. According to U.S. law, in L2 level of autonomous driving, the driver is still the first person responsible for the safety of the vehicle driving.

This is an exciting new chapter in Tesla 's history to focus on a humanoid robot called Optimus which it intends to mass produce.  For now it can only wave its hands but can you imagine that when it is fully functional, it can help us to do our mundane chores?

I look forward to hearing more from Elon Musk as Optimus is still very much a Work In Progress.  But everything starts with a dream and you never know where it will take you.

personally I felt their humanoid demo at AI Day was below expectations. they spent so much time explaining technologies which doesn't seem cutting edge instead rather current. don't think that this alone can move their share price much higher. hope their next iteration will be more impressive.
